Wayfinding refers to the techniques used by individuals to navigate and orient themselves in physical spaces. This is particularly challenging in hospitals for a variety of reasons. Firstly, hospitals are often complex and large, with buildings that have been constructed over time. Additionally, patients are often anxious, which can impact their cognitive abilities. When patients struggle to find their way, it can lead to unnecessary stress and missed appointments or treatments that are difficult to perform due to the patient's stress levels. These factors are important to consider when designing tools to make it easier for patients to reach their appointments on time and without stress. This design process is referred to as wayfinding design and encompasses a variety of disciplines, with spatial information design being the most crucial but also the most complex one. Wayfinding Design for hospitals is incredibly complex This is evident in the fact that patients struggle to find their way in pretty much any hospital around the world, despite the signage that is deployed. Hospitals often have hundreds of destinations that need to be accessible from many differents points in the facility. However, cognitive research shows that people can only process 3 to 4 references (Passini, 1992) at each intersection of the corridor system. If there are more, it can lead to significant navigational difficulties. Navigo Studio employs technology to optimize wayfinding design. We use computer models and space syntax methods, incorporating building geometric data to create an optimized spatial information design that builds up to both analog and digital resources. Additionally, technology is used to measure and improve the performance of the wayfinding system after it has been implemented. Our wayfinding designs are highly effective due to our unparalleled spatial information design process. The design algorithms are optimized to identify the minimal necessary information required for navigation and how it should be conveyed, including the timing, location, intended audience, and channels such as sign locations, staffed or non-staffed kiosks, mobile screens, and websites. This reduces the cognitive load on patients, resulting in a stress-free journey for them. WHAT WE DO COMPUTATIONAL WAYFINDING DESIGN Spatial Information Design plays a crucial role in wayfinding design. Traditionally, it is a labor-intensive process that can never be fully perfected for health care environments. Navigo Studio has revolutionized this process by creating a methodology that automates it, resulting in spatial information designs that are both comprehensive and legible, while minimizing cognitive effort for patients. How effective was it and did it really improve the wayfinding performance and wayfinding experience? What is the ROI? Navigo Studio utilizes research methods that involve the use of machine learning techniques to conduct quantitative evaluations of wayfinding performance. Navigo Studio offers advanced digital wayfinding solutions that enhance the wayfinding experience (WX) and wayfinding performance (WP) for pedestrians in built environments, using Artifical Intelligence, and backed by principles of spatial cognitive science.
