Hi Aniek! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? My name is Aniek de Winter and I am 27 years old. I have a bachelor in Biotechnology, during which I became very interested in why people do or do not accept certain technological innovations, such as GMOs. That’s why I decided to do a second masters in Communication and Innovation, next to my masters in Biotechnology. After graduating my masters, I worked at a consultancy firm for 8 months, until a friend told me that the VHP4Safety project was looking for somebody with a background in both biology and science communication. This was like music to my ears, so I applied for the job and that’s why I’m here now! And what will you be doing for VHP4Safety? I am responsible for the communication and stakeholder engagement, so what Sara and Bas did before, but it is now combined in one job. The communication part means updating the website, making LinkedIn posts, sending the Newsflash et cetera. The stakeholder engagement part means that I’m part of Research Line 3, focusing in the societal part of the Virtual Human Platform. What is needed to make sure that the platform will be accepted by regulators and in society as a possible replacement for animal testing? I’m looking into ways for stakeholders to contribute to these goals. What interests you the most about the VHP4Safety project? What interests me most is the interdisciplinarity and the challenges that come along with this. As a social scientist, it makes me very enthusiastic that there is a whole research line in this project that is focused specifically on ensuring societal acceptance. But still it can be challenging to get the researchers out of their own bubbles and to work in an interdisciplinary way. I think the Common Language Taskforce plays a very nice role in this and I think the glossary that they created is very helpful for fostering the interdisciplinary collaboration. I also think that events like the Designathons and Hackathons are very useful for this. And then a word about yourself, what do you do when you're not busy with your research? In my free time, I play trumpet in a cover band named the Great Cover-Up. I have played trumpet since I was nine years old and I still enjoy it a lot! Making music together with others really energizes me. Also, I recently found a new hobby, gardening! This year I am growing my own vegetables for the first time. I hope that the weather will soon get better so the slugs will stop eating all of my plants! RECAP OF THE 5TH DESIGNATHON Spotlight 2 months ago Report of the 5th VHP4Safety Designathon On Monday, 13 May, the 5th VHP4Safety Designathon took place, offering engaging and informative sessions. The day began with an introduction by Anne Kienhuis, followed by an update from Ozan on the state of the platform. The Taskforce Risk Assessment then hosted a session on managing uncertainties in risk assessment, introduced by Jacqueline van Engelen. Participants were divided into three groups to discuss specific subtopics: exposure, QIVIVE, and (q)AOPs. Each group presented their findings in a plenary session before breaking for lunch. In the afternoon, Isaac Ortega Alvarado presented on the perspective of end users, distinguishing between stakeholders and users. This was followed by a discussion on identifying the end users of the Virtual Human Platform. Participants then worked in breakout groups to explore the needs of specific end user categories. After a short coffee break, these groups shared their insights. The final session featured Marc Teunis, who gave a presentation on the use of AI in risk assessment, sparking discussions on the advantages and disadvantages of AI. The event concluded with closing remarks from Anne Kienhuis, followed by a networking session with drinks. The Collaboration Day started with insightful presentations by Anne Kienhuis (VHP4Safety) and Mathieu Vinken (ONTOX), who outlined the overarching goals of both projects and the governance structure that will underpin the collaboration between the two projects. Our partnership is structured around six "Collaboration Groups" (CGs) focusing on the following topics: qAOPs, Chemical Selection, Risk Assessment, Data Management, Stakeholder Involvement, and IT Platforms. Following the presentations by Anne and Mathieu, leaders of each CG pitched ideas for collaboration, setting the stage for the breakout groups. These groups engaged in interesting discussions on ways to enhance our joint efforts. The morning session concluded with a presentation of the outcomes from these discussions, leading into a well-deserved lunch break. The afternoon was dedicated to the VHP4Safety Symposium, where PhD candidates had the opportunity to present their research to the academic partners of the project. Each presentation was followed by a productive exchange of ideas from researchers from various work packages, providing new perspectives to the PhD candidates. The day concluded with a nice and interactive closing activity from our coordinator Juliette Legler, followed by networking drinks. All in all, it was a very fruitful day filled with valuable insights and networking opportunities. We are enthusiastic about the future and the achievements that our continued collaboration will bring! MEET THE CREW - ISAAC ORTEGA ALVARADO Spotlight 3 months ago Interview with Isaac Ortega Alvarado, postdoc researcher in VHP4Safety Hi Isaac! Could you tell us a little bit about yourself? Hi! My name is Isaac Ortega Alvarado. I am from Costa Rica, where I did my bachelors. I have a bachelors in communication and industrial design engineering. After these, I started working mainly on commercial projects. Then, I took a master’s degree in design in Turkey, a different life experience. I also worked on my master’s research in Portugal. After completing my master’s, I went for a PhD at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, in Trondheim, Norway. So, I have been moving around quite a bit for the last ten years! And what do you do in the project? In VHP4Safety, I work as a postdoc researcher in work package 3.1 since 15 February. I am currently trying to bring a user perspective to the project. This perspective has been requested in the project by the people building the platform, as they are interested in knowing who they are building it for. I’m coming with this perspective, and the project has been going on for almost three years, so a lot of information and knowledge has already been collected. I’m interested in seeing how this information can converge into something that could become the Virtual Human Platform. How has it been for you to move to the Netherlands? I had been to the Netherlands before, so in general, it was not very surprising. But I have been a bit surprised about the weather. It has been very rainy since I got here. The temperatures are higher than I expected; it’s a lot warmer than in Norway, where I lived during the past five years. In January, when I came here, I was expecting to see more snow, haha. Why is the project of interest to you personally? Personally, I see this project as responsible innovation. The research in the project can be beneficial for everybody. In the end, the whole society can benefit from it, not just one group. When is VHP4Safety a success for you? For me, success will be when the tools or infrastructure for risk assessment change. I think the goal should be better risk assessment, not necessarily creating a virtual human or avoiding the use of animals. These are also successes, but to my understanding, the aim of the project is to enable better risk assessment. What has struck you recently while working on the project? Everything! I’m a designer, I don’t have a biology or chemistry-related background, like most people in the project. A lot of the things that I’m learning are entirely new to me. I also have a social science background, which makes working on a transdisciplinary project like this very interesting. And then a word about yourself, what do you do when you're not busy with your research? I like going for long walks, like really long walks. The longest I have ever walked is 62 kilometers in one day. So do you have any plans to join the “Nijmeegse Vierdaagse” some time, the four-day walking event in the East of the Netherlands? That sounds good, I will definitely check it out!
