THE MAD TRAPPER OF RAT RIVER

EAGLE PLAINS HOTEL, YUKON. THIS HOTEL WAS THE LAST STOP BEFORE REACHING THE
ARCTIC CIRCLE.

THIS WAS DISPLAYED ON A WALL AT THE HOTEL.

IN THE WINTER OF 1932, AFTER KILLING ONE ROYAL CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE CONSTABLE
AND WOUNDING ANOTHER, ALBERT JOHNSON LED THE MOUNTIES ON A 45-DAY CHASE THROUGH
THE ARCTIC CIRCLE WILDERNESS.

ENDURING SUBZERO TEMPERATURES WITH ONLY THE SUPPLIES HE CARRIED IN HIS BACKPACK,
THE MAD TRAPPER, WEARING HEAVY HOMEMADE SNOWSHOES, SURVIVED MULTIPLE GUN BATTLES
WITH HIS PURSUERS.

FOR 2 WEEKS IN NEAR 50 BELOW ZERO WEATHER AND 2 BLIZZARDS JOHNSON EVADED HIS
CAPTURES.

ON JAN 30TH HE WAS CONFRONTED ONCE MORE. AFTER A SHORT SHOOTOUT, CONSTABLE
'SPIKE' MILLEN LAY DEAD - SHOT THROUGH THE HEART. JOHNSON MADE HIS ESCAPE BY
CLIMBING A SHEAR CLIFF IN THE DEAD OF NIGHT.

DURING A RAGING BLIZZARD HE CLIMBED OVER THESE 7,000 FT MOUNTAINS WITH VERY
LITTLE FOOD AND NO CLIMBING GEAR. WITH VISIBILITY DURING THE BLIZZARD AT NEAR
ZERO, TRYING TO CLING TO SHEER CLIFFS OF SLIPPERY ICE AND NUMBING COLD, THE
MOUNTAIN MEN OF THE AREA TOLD THE MOUNTIES IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE TO DO AT THIS
TIME OF THE YEAR EVEN WITH THE PROPER GEAR AND FOOD.

A NATIVE TRAPPER TRAVELING THROUGH ONE OF THE GUARDED PASSES TOLD OF STRANGE
TRACKS ON THE UPPER REACHES OF THE EAGLE RIVER, YUKON. ASSUMING THAT THIS COULD
BE JOHNSON ON THE OTHER SIDE OF MOUNTAINS, THE MOUNTIES KNEW THEY WERE NO MATCH
IN OVERTAKING THIS FUGITIVE.

IN A CANADIAN FIRST, ON FEB 7, 1932 A MONOPLANE PILOTED BY W.R. MAY WAS PRESSED
INTO SERVICE TO AID IN THE SEARCH TO FINALLY CORNER JOHNSON.

ON FEBRUARY 17, 1932 MAY DIRECTED THE MOUNTIES TO A HAIRPIN TURN IN THE MIDDLE
SECTION OF THE EAGLE RIVER WHERE A GUN BATTLE EVENTUALLY BROUGHT JOHNSON DOWN.
IT TOOK 9 BULLETS TO JOHNSON'S BODY TO FINALLY END THIS 5 WEEK ORDEAL. WHEN HE
WAS KILLED IN THIS FINAL SHOOTOUT, HIS EMACIATED BODY WEIGHED “NOT MUCH OVER
100-POUNDS” ACCORDING TO ONE CONSTABLE AT THE SCENE.

WHERE DID HE COME FROM (HIS FINGER PRINTS WERE NO HELP)? NO FAMILY MEMBER EVER
CLAIMED THE BODY. BEFORE ENTERING THE ARCTIC RIVER AREA NO ONE HAD EVER HEARD OF
HIM. DURING THE ENTIRE MAN HUNT THE MOUNTIES NEVER HEARD HIM SPEAK A WORD. AND
YET HE HAD OVER $2,000 IN CASH AND SOME PLACER GOLD IN HIS POSSESSION.

there is a pic, allegedly of Johnson (alive) at:

     www.outdoorlife.com/outdoor/photogallery/article/0,20036,...

This story is the basis for the movie Death Hunt, although the movie is
     highly fictionalized.

Dick North wrote a couple of books about this guy and thinks he identified
him as Jon Jonsen. Jonsen immigrated from Norway with his parents at age 6
to the US and grew up on their farm in North Dakota. He learned his outdoor
skills growing up in the outdoors, and turned to a life of crime as a young
man. He spent 3 years in prison for stealing horses before winding up in
     the Yukon.

Known as the bush pilot in the first use of aircraft in a Canadian
wilderness manhunt, W. R. "Wop" May had a prior brush with history. He was
the pilot being pursued by the Red Baron, Manfred von Richtofen, when
Richtofen was shot down and killed. Richtofen was in turn being pursued by
Capt. Roy Brown, who was originally given (and accepted) credit for
shooting down the German ace. Bown was May's commanding officer, and had
given the neophyte May instructions to stay out of any fights. When their
flight became enbroiled in a dogfight, May joined the fray against orders
and soon had Richtofen on his tail. Brown spotted May fleeing with the Red
Baron in pursuit and followed. Richtofen was shot down and May escaped.
However, it now seems very likely that Richtofen was brought down by ground
fire (and pretty likely that Brown knew he couldn't have fired the telling
     shot.)

I can tell you all a bit about this picture. It was the picture taken by
the Dr who pronounced him dead after he was shot on the eagle river by the
mounties. He did however manage to wound one of the posse with a shot the
entered his arm, exited I believe at the elbow and entered his chest
(correct me if I am wrong here). That member of the posse managed to
survive and was in fact operated on and saved by the same Dr who performed
the autopsy (spelling error I am sure) and took the above picture. His name
was Dr. J. A. Urquart. He was my great grandfather...

This guy was crazy, the way he escapaced for so long. theirs a new book
about him too, a new theory, "What became of sigvald, anyway" by this pilot
who thinks it might be his grandmothers brother. Personally, I buy it, too
many things match up. His site is www.wassigvaldthemadtrapper.com

that picture just creeps me out -_-

You all a fcking idiot. This is a true story which happen in 1932 in
Northern Canada. HE is also known as the Mad Trapper. And please show some
respect for the guy, he die through 9 bullets and been chase like a dog
through 5 weeks. Imagine thatt was you, bitches. His body was recovered by
the forensic last week on the Daily planet show. Go daily planet web for
     more info, numbskulls.

I live right in Aklavik and it's ALL true. Live right in the same town.
email me & maybe you'll believe when you see it............HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I recently was aware of The Mad Trapper story and the fact that Sigvald was
my grandmothers brother and my fathers uncle I cant wait until the DNA
     tests will be presented.

I travelled through that area in the summer, right near where all that took
place. The Mackenzie Delta is a forbidding place in the summer, let alone
in the dead of winter. I admire the guy for the simple fact that he was one
unbelievably tough SOB. As were the guys who were after him. Read the book,
there are a couple written about it that I know of.
 12. kayettie 15y

His true identity was actually never known, and he only had 1500 dollars in
     cash
 13. concreteforests 14y

yeah this is the one of the stories you hear about as a kid if you live up
     North.
 14. Mike Tufts 14y

     Bottom Line
the DNA testing and comparison has eliminated all known possible
connections between the Mad trapper and any individuals he was believed to
     be.

His true identity at this point remains a mystery.

It is believed based on isotopes found in his teeth that he was raised in
the northwestern US and or Scandinavia.
His teeth showed evidence of Excellent Dental work known to be top Quality
for that time frame. As a result of this it is theorized that he was from a
     wealthy family.

As a result of his behavior when under fire and exposed to attack with
explosives it is believed he was a veteran of Military conflict; possibly
the Great War. He was a Crack shot as well.

He avoided Capture in one of the most inhospitable regions on the planet
for over 6 weeks. Surviving without Fire at temperatures ranging from -30
to -60 C [-22F to -76F], seldom shooting to avoid drawing attention to
himself, he crossed the Richardson Mountains in a raging Blizzard.

Whoever he was he was one of the toughest individuals in Canadian history.
The Story of the Mad Trapper is an Epic Tale of Endurance based on Reality.
His feats will be talked about for many decades to come. It is unlikely
anybody will ever duplicate his performance.

while his criminal behavior is to be frowned upon his Endurance is deeply
respected by the RCMP and anybody who ever spent time in a Northern Winter.

     Mike.

Hi, I'm an admin for a group called Canadian History, and we'd love to have
     this added to the group!
 16. Dick 13y

Not a good way to go? Are you kidding? Talk about a Blaze of Glory. This
guy was almost supernatural in what he was able to do. No, no, this guy
died an absolutely mythic, glorious death, rotten cop killer that he was.
 17. Mike Tufts 13y

In addition to what was posted above the Mad Trapper was approached to be
questioned about a trapline Dispute. Other local trappers had their traps
     sprung and hung in trees
[ an accepted means of expressing a boundary Conflict at the time]

instead of voicing his concerns and opinions he shot the interviewing
officer [ Alfred King] who was rushed to Aklavik for medical treatment

He may have been innocent of any charges until he fired that shot

the only traceable item in his possession was a .30-30 Savage Rifle
Records indicate it was shipped to Ross River in the Yukon and sold there
 18. Misery2 13y

the main mounty in the chase said later there could have been more dialogue
during this incident. Trappers are independent beasts and do not take
     easily to being pushed around.
 19. Misery2 13y

If it wasn't for the dam airplane he would have escaped to the US
 20. Misery2 13y

He could not would not be taken alive. Cause he knew he would be hanged. he
     was one tough SOB
