BEARS OF LAKE KEOWEE Skip to content * Home * About * Bears in the Past ← Older posts May 12, 2016 · 10:39 am TWO SMOKEY MOUNTAIN BEARS PER SQUARE MILE Photo by Gary Carter There are about 1,600 black bears in Great Smoky Mountains National Park and nearly 11 million annual visitors in area a bit more than 800 square miles. The park’s wildlife biologists have the challenging job of managing the interactions between them. Full story here. Did you know that a safe distance for viewing bears is 50 yards? That’s almost twice the distance from the pitcher’s mound to home plate! South Carolina’s Arbor Day is the first Friday of December. Hope you can celebrate by planting a tree or just appreciating them. The Palmetto is a symbol of the defeat of the British fleet at Fort Moultrie on Sullivan’s Island. The fort was built of Palmetto logs, which absorbed the impact of the cannon balls. 4 Comments Filed under Fun Facts, Nature Tagged as arbor day, palmetto, south carolina, tree November 25, 2015 · 1:25 pm EATING MINDFULLY THIS THANKSGIVING WITH GRATITUDE The following is a short dedication of merit regarding nourishment from the Buddhist tradition expressing their aspiration that the work they’ve done benefits all beings: May we all become free from anxiety and fear about eating. May we all be at ease. May we all be content as we nourish this precious human body and mind. May our hearts be happy and satisfied as we walked the path of awakening. – Jan Chozen Bays, MD, Author of Mindful Eating Leave a comment Filed under Deep Thoughts Tagged as #gratitude, #mindful eating, #mindfulness, #Thanksgiving November 3, 2015 · 8:10 am WHO INSPIRES YOU? Leave a comment Filed under Deep Thoughts October 27, 2015 · 1:00 pm HIKE BY MOONLIGHT TONIGHT! Tonight’s moon is full, super and hunting.* The bright Hunter’s Moon will rise around sunset and set around sunrise. It is the only night in the month when the Moon is in the sky all night long. The path of tonight’s full Moon makes a narrow angle with the horizon so, there is not a long period of darkness between sunset and moonrise. The best time to see tonight’s moon is around moonrise when you may see it in a twilight sky. * Full moon – The Moon’s illuminated side is facing the Earth. The Moon appears to be completely illuminated by direct sunlight. * Supermoon – (Not an official astronomical term.) A full Moon or a new Moon at its closest point to Earth in its monthly orbit; also called perigee. Timeanddate.com defines a Supermoon by distance from the Earth: less than 223,694 miles (vs 248,548 miles). * Hunter’s Moon – First Full Moon following the Harvest Moon last month. Last month’s Harvest Moon taken with iPhone through binoculars. In fact, this South Carolinian Regal Moth larva can grow to the size of a hot dog (5 – 5.5″ in length)! If you live somewhere here, you may see HHDs in the summertime. By now, they have burrowed in the ground to pupate and look like this: As early as May, you may see the regal or royal walnut moth, Citheronia regalis (Fabricius) – one of our largest and most spectacular moths. The Regal Moth’s wingspan ranges from 3.75″ to 6.10″! South Carolina Black Bear Population The mountain black bear population of South Carolina is located primarily in Oconee, Pickens, Greenville and Spartanburg Counties; the coastal population is found in Georgetown and Horry Counties. Black bear in the mountains of South Carolina seem to be expanding their range southward and westward and their population is increasing. A 2004 study conducted in a section of the mountains of North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia indicated a preliminary population estimate of approximately one bear per square mile. (Settlage et al. 2004) This would indicate that approximately 900 bears are located in the Upstate! Bamberg County – “No Documented Occurence” The light blue county shown above is Bamberg County. According to 2010 census figures, it is the 4th smallest county by population and land area (sq miles) in the state of South Carolina. It has approximately 40 people per square mile (9th smallest). A professional hunter and owner of Lowcountry Deer Mineral stated that he hasn’t seen any bears in Bamburg County but has seen bear tracks! Typically, black bears require large expanses of forest dominated by a diversity of mast-producing hardwoods and shrubs intermixed with early successional vegetation such as blackberries, pokeberries, etc. However, black bears are adaptable. As long as they can find adequate food sources and have suitable den sites, black bears can be found in a variety of habitats. I spoke with a DNR wildlife biologist who believes there are bears in Bamberg County, but no record of sightings. I also spoke with two separate wildlife removal experts who work in Bamburg. One surmised that there may be too much competition for resources with wild hogs in the county, however, surrounding counties have bear sightings as well as hogs. The other joked that maybe Heirs Drugstore was using bear repellent!
