Continuing Care Assistants (CCAs) provide care to seniors and people with disabilities who may need assistance with daily activities. This can mean helping with housekeeping, doing meal prep, providing personal care, and supporting clients during outings in the community. CCAs contribute to the health care system in an important and powerful way. Work Opportunities There are many employment possibilities as a CCA, in a variety of settings such as: * Client residences (providing care in the client’s home) * Long-term care facilities * Home support agencies * Acute care hospital departments * Residential care facilities Many CCAs work in unionized work environments with full-time hours, health benefits, and pension benefits. As the aging population in Nova Scotia grows and the province invests in Continuing Care, CCAs have continued job security in this rewarding field of work. Top employers currently include the Nova Scotia Health Authority, Shannex, and VON. CCAs may also work for private households, and can be self-employed. For more information on this occupation, visit the sector council website or view on Explore Careers. Required Education To practice in Nova Scotia, CCAs must graduate from an approved program, and successfully complete the CCA provincial exam. There are a few different paths to gain your CCA status, and you don’t need to wait until graduation to apply for jobs. For example, you might be hired at a facility while you’re still in training. The employer could have you agree to finish your education within three years. Plus, the provincial government offers grants to support new CCAs with their education, as do many long-term care facilities and home care agencies. An appropriate class of driver's licence may also be required for CCAs who work in home care. Interested in Continuing Care as a Career? We can help. Before pursuing any job or making a career change, you may want to consider speaking with one of our career practitioners at Nova Scotia Works. To find a career practitioner, please contact your local Nova Scotia Works centre. Read More HELPING MORE YOUNG PEOPLE BUILD THEIR CAREER PLAN Nov 19, 2021 Nova Scotia Works is excited to announce that our School Liaison program has grown. In partnership with Early Education and Childhood Development (EECD) and Labour, Skills, and Immigration (LSI), our most recent expansion enables School Liaisons to support students in 49 schools across the province on their career journey. About the School Liason Program This joint program launched back in 2017, with only 2 School Liaisons involved at the beginning of the pilot. The vision was to use the services and support of Nova Scotia Works Employment Service Centres to empower students in charting their own career course. With this model, parents and supporters would also be involved and able to help with their student’s career exploration journey. With expansions in 2018 and 2020, we’ve slowly grown the program since it launched. Today 20,000+ students and their families/caregivers have access to services from a NS Works School Liaison. Our School Liaisons are passionate about helping students reach their career goals. They can offer support with: * Exploring jobs and careers available now and in the future * Accessing labour market information and career planning tools * Discovering and identify interests, passions, and strengths * Helping student find jobs or volunteer opportunities that give you experience * Learning how to conduct an effective job search * Leading workshops to help parents and caregivers support students We heard from some School Liaisons about the importance of the program, and its positive effect on the life of young people in the province. > "There is no doubt that when students have access to career development > services within their own environment, it makes a big difference in how they > begin their career journeys. The knowledge and expertise that NSW School > Liaisons can provide schools is extremely valuable in supporting the entire > student body, not just the ones who engage in career development electives or > co-op and O2 programs." - Charlene Tasco, Opportunity Place > > "The expansion of the School Liaison program excites me because it promotes > the importance of making career conversations a priority in helping our youth > prepare for the future labour market. As the program continues to expand > across the province, I am excited about the increased opportunities this > program will have for the students and the future of our province, where more > young Nova Scotians can live and work at home." - Tracey MacMullin, NEDAC If you are a student or caregiver at one of the schools below, please connect with a teacher or guidance counsellor to find out more about the program. In fact, it’s the single largest investment in public infrastructure ever on the island. With five major projects on the go, these upcoming changes are not only creating jobs for construction workers — the island will also see improved healthcare and education infrastructure, and direct benefits for the local economy. Construction is Cape Breton-Unama’ki’s 4th largest industry, and it’s growing steadily (over 1,000 new workers joined in May, June, July 2021 alone). These current projects alone are estimated to create nearly 800 stable, full-time jobs in construction. The contracts say that employers must hire local apprentices and workers, focusing on under-represented groups in the industry like women, Indigenous folks, and African Nova Scotians. While this is great for encouraging diversity, there are also opportunities for new folks to join the field due to the small local labour force on the island. Building Tomorrow is a campaign from the Cape Breton Partnership highlighting the five major projects underway that will revitalize the Island and put more people to work. Here are the five developments currently in progress. 1. Nova Scotia Community College’s Marconi Campus: Work on NSCC’s Sydney campus started in 2020. The new campus will have a modern look, with lots of open space and state-of-the-art technology. It will also follow accessibility and environmental design guidelines. 2. Expansions for Cape Breton Regional Hospital: This hospital has served as the main referral and trauma centre for the island since it opened in 1995. The expansion will make room for a larger emergency department, cancer centre and critical care department. 3. New Waterford Community Hub: A contemporary health centre is coming to the New Waterford area, complete with 60 beds for long-term care, 12 short-stay beds and a school. The community hub will create hands-on learning opportunities for students in healthcare. 4. Northside Health Complex: This community hospital has been around since 1954, and currently serves North Sydney, Sydney Mines and surrounding areas. The redevelopment will provide residents with a modern health centre and 60-bed long-term care home. 5. Glace Bay Hospital: Open since 1986, the Glace Bay community hospital serves Glace Bay, Dominion, Reserve Mines, Donkin, Port Morien, and nearby areas. The renovations aim to increase space in a newly opened Renal Dialysis clinic by 30%. If you’re looking for a job in construction, Cape Breton-Unama’ki, could be a great destination for you. With beautiful natural scenery and a growing number of opportunities in the area, it’s worth considering. To learn more about the area, check out our regional profile on the island. Or to chat with a certified career practitioner, contact or visit your local Nova Scotia Works centre. Read More EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION: WHAT’S CHANGING AND HOW WE CAN HELP Oct 14, 2021 Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) are key to Nova Scotia’s modern-day society. Helping to set up children for success, ECEs play a pivotal role in the early stage of their lives. Research shows that this success rate is directly linked to time spent with highly educated and well-trained ECEs. That’s why this sector is launching a workforce development strategy over the next few years to enhance training called “Excellence in Early Childhood Education.” What is the plan? According to the Nova Scotia Government, the goal of this strategy is to “ensure a strong, qualified and stable workforce in early learning and childcare now and into the future.” The plan aims to highlight the value of this role, by professionally recognizing current ECEs and increasing educational opportunities for those who may need it. The hope is that this will result in both improved practice and higher wages. The sector also wants to attract new people to the field, providing more opportunities for under-represented groups such as Mi’kmaq/Indigenous, Black/African Nova Scotian, Acadian/Francophone, 2SLGBTQ+, persons with disabilities, and newcomers. “Nova Scotia recognizes the importance of diversity in early learning and childcare, and the power that comes from children and their families seeing themselves and their communities reflected in their ECEs.” What does it mean for me? Right now, anyone working in childcare or pre-primary is referred to as an ECE. This is about to change, as the government introduces a regulated certification system. By the end of 2023, only people with recognized diplomas and degrees in the field will have responsibility for early childhood educational leadership. As the sector moves towards this big shift, the government will provide opportunities for individuals without a diploma or degree to advance their career. For those who are just entering their studies in the field, this educational requirement will apply as well. There are additional supports for both students and current ECEs coming with this strategy, such as: * Various bursaries for students at approved ECE diploma/degree programs in the province. * Funding for current ECEs to participate in this initiative, to help cover fees for assessments and exams. * Supports to help high school students explore early childhood education careers as an option for the future. How we can help This ever-changing field can be challenging to navigate. If you are a current ECE working in childcare or pre-primary and are looking to develop your career path, Nova Scotia Works can help. Our Career Navigators will assist with you with making a plan, and can support you while you’re studying too. To find a Career Navigation Specialist, please contact your local NS Works Centre. Read More BLENDED SERVICES: HOW WE’VE PIVOTED DUE TO COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS Sep 14, 2021 The pandemic brought forward significant disruptions for many industries across the province, including employment services. When Nova Scotia Centres across the province were forced to close their doors for the initial shutdown in March 2020, they had to adapt to find new ways to interact with their clients. Things changed quickly. Paperwork once filled out on clipboards was collected online. 1-on-1 client meetings that previously happened in staff offices transitioned to phone calls or video conferences. Workshops that brought job seekers together in meeting rooms shifted to interactive webinars or pre-recorded online courses. Going fully virtual didn’t last long though. We adopted a blended model as restrictions lessened, offering both online and in-person services. Clients who were able to use remote services continued to do so, and clients who needed in-person supports were able to visit the office once again (with health and safety in mind). This approach proved very beneficial as the province moved back and forth through various phases and levels of restrictions in late 2020 throughout 2021. While making this transition took some trial and error to be successful, both staff and clients realized there are benefits to keeping this model into the future. We can serve our clients better by continuing with a blended services model at Nova Scotia Works. Here are just some reasons why offering services online is helpful: * Clients who face transportation challenges can call or log in from the comfort of their own home. * It’s now possible to participate in workshops at any time, Clients with less flexible schedules are now able to participate in workshops at any time, with the help of webinar recordings or specialized learning modules. * Staff placed a greater focus on accessibility as they adapted their forms, materials and tools for a wider audience. The COVID-19 pandemic will undoubtedly leave lasting impacts on the world of looking for work, and Nova Scotia Works centres remain committed to serving you in the best way possible. Whether you prefer to come to our offices in person, access services remotely, or a combination of the two, your career experts are always just a call, email or visit away. Read More THE SERVICES SECTOR IS BOUNCING BACK Mar 15, 2022 The COVID-19 pandemic impacted every industry across the country, in one way or another. With public health measures regularly shifting, it has been a difficult time for the economy. The services sector, which accounted for over 80% of provincial employment, was hit particularly hard. The main employer sectors are Retail, Healthcare and Social Services, Educational Services, Professional, Scientific and Technical Services. Thankfully, that is changing in Nova Scotia right now. The province’s case counts are down again, and our current vaccination rate shows that we have reached Phase 5 of Nova Scotia’s reopening plan in September. This means little to no restrictions for the services sector, and an increasing demand from clientele. The progress has already started. While it hasn’t reached pre-pandemic levels yet, the services industry is on its way to recovery. June’s NS Labour Force Survey found that the sector has actually recovered over 80% of its job loss from the third lockdown in May. That’s 18,000 jobs in June alone. The two top expanding industries from the survey were Wholesale and Retail Trade (+7,700 jobs) and Transportation and Warehousing (+2,700 jobs). As demand continues to rise and the economy strengthens, the sector is expected to build up even more. The future holds more jobs, and more opportunities. Some of these businesses, like restaurants, are even struggling with staffing shortages right now. So whether you are returning to work, or just entering the workforce, the services sector could be an excellent place to start your job hunt. We can help.
