EDUCARE COMMUNITY BASED ORGANIZATION (CBO) IS A NON-PROFIT MAKING ORGANISATION
BASED IN KALOMO, A RURAL DISTRICT IN THE SOUTHERN PROVINCE OF ZAMBIA AND ALSO
HAS OPERATIONS IN ZIMBA AND CHOMA DISTRICTS IN THE SAME PROVINCE. EDUCARE CBO
LOOKS AT SOLUTIONS TO PROBLEMS AFFECTING THE PUBLIC WITH REGARD TO EDUCATION,
HEALTH, ECONOMIC AND GOVERNANCE AREAS.

ZAMBIA DECLARES HUNGER AS A NATIONAL DISASTER

On 29th February 2024, The President of Zambia declared hunger as a national
disaster following the impact of El Nino and climate change. The drought is
affecting over 3 million people who are in dire need of food right now. The
government is supplying subsidized mealie meal through certain partnered with
stores. However, you find that each time the mealie meal comes into stock there
are long ques and stampede in some situations as people scramble for mealie
meal.

EDUCARE solution to the problem

Educare CBO is working with its partners to organize donor funds and organize
relief food (maize) that will be distributed to the needy people in the
communities of Educare’s operations. The target will be the vulnerable old,
disabled and the sick. These are the major categories of people which have been
facing challenges in queuing up and scramble for mealie meal. Most of these
categories have even been injured during stampede and cannot withstand the
pressure of the queues.


INCREASE IN DEATH RATE (HIV/AIDS)

EDUCARE solution to the problem

Increase in death rate in Kalomo due to rising HIV pandemic has left many
children orphaned therefore having no sponsorship for school. The rise in HIV/
AIDS could be as a result of having no industrial activities to keep people busy
as a result; people divest their energies into sexual activities. Educare
ensures inclusion of comprehensive sexuality education in all its presentations
whether on radio presentations, career talks to pupils, entrepreneurial
workshops to different people in the communities. Educare CBO further puts
measures to identify the orphaned children and ensure they receive necessary
education which will include skills (vocation courses) that will enable them
have industry knowledge.


INCREASE IN EARLY MARRIAGES

The cultures of some communities promote boy superiority and hence some parents
have ended up marrying off their girl children in order to sponsor to school the
boy children. They believe that girls are an economic resource that can be
traded to eradicate some domestic problems. Educare CBO has initiated meetings
with traditional leaders to educate them on the importance of the girl child
education just like boys. Further meetings are organized for the communities and
radio programs are broadcast to discuss about changes in cultural beliefs so as
to promote girl child education.

INCREASE IN PREGNANCIES AMONG SCHOOL GIRLS

EDUCARE solution to the problem

High pregnancy cases among young girls due to lack of adequate information on
sexuality. Most of such girls fail to get back to school because of poor
backgrounds and the fear of facing the friends again. Educare goes round schools
collecting data about young girls who fall pregnant. It ensures such girls are
counselled and properly monitored to ensure they get back to school after taking
care of their infants. Educare also gives talks to pupils on comprehensive
sexuality and how young girls can protect themselves from contracting
pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases. Educare CBO further collects data
from schools with regard to girls who fall pregnant so that it makes follow ups
on their getting back to school.


OUT-SKIRT LOCATION OF THE SCHOOLS

EDUCARE solution to the problem

Majority of the schools in Kalomo and Zimba Districts are in the rural
out-skirt. Most teachers have not been accepting to work from these schools
mainly because of bad road network, poor mobile phone network, no electricity
and poor healthcare services. Hence, most teachers are seconded and therefore
teaching in subjects they are not trained. This is evident in the poor results
from most of the rural schools. Educare CBO facilitate for continuous
professional development (CPD) workshops and are being held in zonal centres.
For this purpose, Educare CBO works in conjunction with the District Education
Office to organise workshops for such teachers.


INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF IDLE YOUTHS ROAMING THE STREETS

EDUCARE solution to the problem

There are Grade 12 school leavers, college and university graduates who have
nothing to do either because they have no money to go for tertiary education or
they have graduated tertiary education but are not finding employment. Such
youths have become a serious security risk to the community as they are a source
of unwanted gang groups terrorising communities as they engage in robbery and
other delinquent activities. Their presence is also the reason for the increase
of HIV/AIDS a pandemic which Educare CBO wants to address through rightful
networking.


EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE

The effects of climate change have become very visible in the following ways:

 a. Poor rainfall patterns has led to high death rate of animals as animals have
    to struggle to find water to drink and food.
 b. There is a drastic drop in the prices of livestock as people just want to
    receive any little amount to be able to buy any food.
 c. Early marriages for girls as parents want to get money to be able to buy
    food.
 d. Increase in the teenage pregnancies as girls are willing to give themselves
    to men in the quest to get some money.
 e. Increase in the cutting down of trees for charcoal in order to get some
    money.



Educare solution to the problem

 a. Educare organizes youth/ women groups so that they come up with some
    entrepreneurial projects which Educare monitors and supervises. This may
    include putting up boreholes for projects and community water supply.
 b. Workshops and other presentations are being held in schools and communities
    to educate pupils and members of the general public about the need for girl
    child education.
 c. Educare organizes the planting of trees to replace the many trees cut down
    for charcoal.

 1. To help reduce teenage pregnancies in schools through presentations on
    comprehensive sexuality education.
 2. To educate the general public which include schools about HIV/AIDS.
 3. To create programs for the Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVCs) that open
    them up to education and skills programs.
 4. To promote importance of girl child education through meetings with
    traditional leaders and communities.
 5. Offer career guidance and counselling to students especially in rural
    schools as they are not exposed to the most basic tertiary education
    information.
 6. To help sustain future environment through the planting of trees and
    educating communities on the importance of preserving nature.
 7. To conduct entrepreneurial workshops to help youths become self-reliant.
