JASON SWETT

QUICKLY AND SAFELY REFACTORING LEGACY CODE

Refactoring can make code easier to understand and safer to work with, but
refactoring itself is often risky and time-consuming. In this talk Jason shares
techniques he’s used to refactor code speedily while minimizing the chances
anything breaks in the process.

ABOUT JASON SWETT

Jason Swett is a developer, speaker, trainer, author and host of The Rails with
Jason podcast. Since putting his first website online in 1996, Jason has worked
with organizations like AT&T, Lenovo, VMware, HP, Dow Jones, Deloitte, Kroger,

JEN LUKER

BUILDING ACCESSIBLE CAREERS

There has been a huge push for accessibility to be part of external websites,
but what about the internal tools we use every day? Jen will go over the reasons
internal accessibility is important, where to start, and how small improvements
can have a big impact on increasing diversity in our workplaces.

ABOUT JEN LUKER

Jen Luker is a Sr. Frontend Engineer, conference speaker, and BookBytes podcast
co-host. She has spent the majority of her career as a full-stack developer
using PHP, Javascript, and CSS, but has a particular fondness for frontend
technologies. She is an advocate for both accessibility, and processes that make
doing the right thing easy and the wrong thing hard. When she's not exploring
solutions, learning new technologies, or reading, Jen's spare time is spent
spinning yarn from raw wool and knitting; she's even been known to 3D print her
own tools for the job. She is also fascinated by all things space, and IoT.

ALESSANDRO DESANTIS

EXTENSIONS ARE DEAD, LONG LIVE EXTENSIONS!

Refactoring can make code easier to understand and safer to work with, but

techniques he’s used to refactor code speedily while minimizing the chances
anything breaks in the process.

ABOUT ALESSANDRO DESANTIS

Alessandro Desantis has worked for and advised numerous startups on what makes
engineers happy and productive. More recently, he has been working for Nebulab,
helping the team scale their consulting efforts and ensure the success of
Solidus.

SEAN DENNY

COMMUNITY DRIVEN SOLIDUS

The management of Solidus has largely been nailed down since the dissolution of
Stembolt, but what does this new nonprofit, community-driven structure means for
the platform long-term? This talk aims to address that questions - and provide
an explanation as to why this will benefit the platform.

ABOUT SEAN DENNY

Sean Denny is CIO and lead developer at TubeDepot and serves as secretary for
the Solidus Stakeholders group. He got his start in web development at the age
of 11, learning HTML to build a Zelda fansite. His design skills have improved
slightly since then. After work, Sean spends his time playing guitar, video
games, and volunteering for various organizations such as Citizens Climate
Education and GiveCamp. He was the organizer for last years Southeast Solidus,
and is the lead organizer for this years SolidusConf 2019.

ERNESTO TAGWERKER

ESCAPING THE TAR PIT

Nobody wants to inherit a project that reeks but here we are. Stuck in the tar
pit. How can we get out? Could we have avoided it in the first place? In this
talk, you will learn how to use a few, great Ruby gems that will guide you out
of that sticky tar you are in.

ABOUT ERNESTO TAGWERKER

Ernesto is the Founder of Ombu Labs, a small software development company

products, coaching entrepreneurs, contributing to open source, and eating
empanadas.

JOEL SAUPE

SOLIDUS API - FROM PWAS TO NATIVE AND BEYOND

In a world of JavaScript and native apps, how does Solidus fit in? We'll discuss
the highs and lows of using the Solidus API, and how we built an extensible
JavaScript SDK enabling us to develop Solidus backed PWAs, native apps, and
more.

ABOUT JOEL SAUPE

TAYLOR SCOTT

TAKING SOLIDUS FROM DEVELOPMENT TO PRODUCTION

This talk is focused on deploying a solidus application to a multi-container
environment on Elasticbeanstalk in AWS. The stack is a rails application running
beside an nginx web server. This will all be executed through GitLab CI but
other CI platforms will be similar.

ABOUT TAYLOR SCOTT

He is currently a Senior Software Engineer working for Deseret Book. His current
role involves working with Elasticsearch to provide logging, metrics, and
front-end search. This also extends to DevOps creating CI pipelines and ensuring
reliable testing and deployment. Last but not least, He works on creating many
features for Deseret Book which integrate with the Solidus platform. When he is
not "on the line" researching new technologies and solutions, he is making the
World of Warcraft a better place. He is also the very proud parent of an obese
cat named Fred who also happens to be his alarm clock in the morning.

PETER BERKENBOSCH

how you can use these to extend and customize your storefront while still
keeping Solidus as vanilla as possible.

runs with his adorable English Stafford.

BRADEN DOUGLASS

BREAKING UP THE BAND MONOLITH WITH EQ

Emotional intelligence is sometimes missing from the software engineering realm.
However, how can we as engineers and managers utilize it when feeling the pain
of a monolithic application design? How do EQ markers equate to when and how a
monolith should be deconstructed? The talk will explore the fundamentals of
emotional intelligence in an engineering team and how to utilize tools from the
"emotional intelligence tool-belt" to read when a team is ready to deconstruct
their monolith.

ABOUT BRADEN DOUGLASS

Developer and community advocate and organizer. Half JavaScript, half Ruby
chameleon hailing from somewhere-yet-nowhere Maine. Remotely building enjoyable
