NEW YORK MAN’S SKULL IS OPENED FOUR TIMES SO DOCTORS COULD WASH HIS BRAIN AFTER
HE SUFFERED SERIOUS HEAD TRAUMA IN MYSTERIOUS ACCIDENT

admin January 25, 2024 0 Comments dailymail, New york, News, TikTok

A New York man broke down as he revealed he had to have his skull removed for
the fourth time to allow surgeons to wash his brain.

Brandon Alexander has faced the repeat skull surgeries after first suffering a
brain injury in October 2019, when all he remembers is leaving his house on a
skateboard.

In the years since, he has endured a number of brain and facial reconstruction
surgeries, but one procedure in September went awry as it left him with a large
swelling over his left eye when an infection filled his head with fluid.

He was rushed to hospital after he began to feel his ‘heartbeat inside his
head’.

In a TikTok filmed the day he found out he had to undergo a fourth skull
removal, Alexander said his ‘life just turned upside down’, breaking down as he
conceded the procedure felt like going back to ‘square one’ in his recovery.

Brandon Alexander suffered a traumatic brain injury in October 2019, starting a
medical battle that has seen him undergo four skull removals and a number of
facial reconstructions

The New Yorker was rushed to hospital following a September surgery that left
him with a post-surgical site infection under his artificial skull

When Alexander suffered his initial brain injury, he says he has no memory of
the moment his life was upended, and only remembers waking up in hospital three
days later.

After four years of surgeries and work as a traumatic brain injury advocate, he
underwent another surgery on his artificial skull in September that left him
with a huge swelling over his left temple.

He said in a TikTok that on September 20, the surgery was intended to lift the
skin and muscles from the left side of his face to raise his eyebrow and ease
tension on his brain.

Although he was left with significant bruising, the surgery was first thought to
be a success, but he gradually deteriorated over a span of eight days.

He said the turning point came during a dinner he had with his girlfriend Julia,
where he began to feel ‘really s*****’, but put it down to withdrawals from pain
medication.

Waking up the next morning Alexander knew something was wrong, as he could feel
his heartbeat in his head while suffering nausea and dizziness.

‘It felt like my brain was doing backflips and I could hear my heartbeat in my
head. I tried to sleep but I couldn’t,’ he said.

He was rushed to NYU Hospital in Manhattan, where medics diagnosed him with a
post-surgical site infection under his artificial skull.

‘They thought I was having a stroke so rushed me to get a CT scan,’ he said.

‘They found an infection underneath my artificial skull implant that was rapidly
progressing and a physician’s assistant came over and broke the news that I
would need surgery.

‘My girlfriend said she just watched my life fall apart because what having a
skull removed means is having to start over again, everything has to start
over.’

While his second-most-recent surgery was initially thought to be a success,
Alexander said he took a turn for the worse at a restaurant with his girlfriend
Julia

He initially put down his symptoms to withdrawals from pain medication, and said
the bruising and yellow-tint was a sign of a good recovery

After medics found his brain surgery had left him with an infection, Alexander
broke down as he faced a fourth skull removal to allow surgeons to wash his
brain

In the video filmed the day he found out he had to have the surgery, wept as he
noted that it was back to ‘square one’, while poking the fluid mass that formed
on the side of his head.

‘I’m trying to stay strong through this, but we’re starting over from the very
beginning in this,’ he added.

Medics found the root cause of the problem was a drain put in his head that is
typically taken out, but was left in on purpose as it was deemed to be helping
recovery of a face lift surgery.

However, the drain became infected, requiring surgeons to once again open up his
skull to wash his brain. Doctors finished the procedure by placing 89 staples in
his head.

In a startling admission over his close shave with death, Alexander said doctors
told him that if he had gone back to sleep after waking up dizzy he may never
have woken up.

‘I now don’t have a skull but they did replace my skull with a titanium mesh, so
it can act as a skull until I have my next brain surgery in April 2024,’ he
said.

‘On November 21st my round of antibiotics finished and now I have to wait six
months to a year for a new skull, as they want to ensure the infection is gone
completely before I can get a new skull and ear implant.

‘Now I’ve got two surgeries left if all goes to plan, one to fix my head and
face in the process, as well as a new implant.’
