Your e-mail: Subscribe Posted in Bucket List March 01, 2021 by Ben Jones APOSTLE ISLANDS, WISCONSIN: KAYAK THROUGH SEA CAVES AND EXPLORE UNTAMED WILDERNESS ON LAKE SUPERIOR Scattered like jewels in the cold blue waters of Lake Superior are a collection of wild islands that locals simply call The Apostles. Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands are a dream world, a place filled with sea caves, deserted beaches, and old lighthouses that still signal across waters littered with the wrecks of old sailing schooners. For visitors, reaching this pure, remote beauty takes a bit of effort, but when you arrive at the islands, you’ll know why you came here. You’ll see the reasons around every turn – in the sculpted rock formations, in the rare and fragile wildflowers, and in the delicate bird tracks that dance across otherwise undisturbed sandy beaches. These islands will quickly become your islands, and like the locals, you’ll soon just call them the Apostles. During these uncertain times, please keep safety in mind and consider adding destinations to your bucket list to visit at a later date. A lighthouse keeper who lived on Sand Island from 1892-1921 said that in this place, with all the wind and the sun, he felt free. Posnov / Moment Collection via Getty Images There are 22 islands in the Apostles. With the exception of the largest, Madeline Island, they are all part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, protected from development and kept as wild as they were a thousand years ago. The islands include pristine areas of old-growth forest that look much as they did when French explorers arrived in the 1600s, searching for a path to the East Indies. There are eight lighthouses in the Apostles, and all but two of them are still in service. Posnov / Moment Collection via Getty Images In fact, there are more lighthouses here than in any other National Park Service property. The lighthouses help boats thread the passages between the islands. The islands have some incredible, untouched beaches like this one on Outer Island that are favorite resting spots for migratory birds. Layne Kennedy / Corbis Documentary via Getty Images There's a lot to explore on the islands. The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore has nearly 70,000 acres of unspoiled wilderness and the islands are home to some beautiful hiking trails. Several of the islands also have campgrounds. According to the National Park Service, one of the largest concentrations of black bears in North American can be found on Stockton Island. HoogzPhoto / Istock via Getty Images The bears are naturally wary and avoid people, although campers should store food carefully. Sea kayaking is easily the best way to explore the Apostles. JMichl / E+ via Getty Images In fact, the islands have become a world-renowned destination for paddlers. Though striking from afar, many of the unique sea caves and coastline formations can only be accessed via kayak. Posnov via Getty Images While there are no official guided kayak tours offered by the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, there are many authorized kayak outfitters in the region that offer half-day and full-day guided trips, equipment rentals, and more. Another unique sight among the Apostles is The Fedora, a freighter that caught fire and sank in 1901 and can still be seen lurking just below the waves. Layne Kennedy / Corbis Documentary via Getty Images There are numerous shipwrecks around the Apostles, including pristine wrecks that appear frozen in time by the cold, fresh water of Lake Superior. The wrecks are a common stop for kayakers and cruises, but they are also popular with divers looking to get even closer to the underwater relics. During the winter months, ice caves form along the lakeshore, creating magical scenes. Matthew Crowley Photography / Moment Collection via Getty Images Some years, there is not enough ice for the National Park Service to allow people to safely visit the caves; however, visitors should always check ahead before attempting to access them. When the caves are open, visitors flock to the islands to see take in the natural wonder. Dendron via Getty Images Seasonal information about the caves, closures, and other alerts can be found on the National Park Service website here. If you'd rather explore the islands on foot, there are more than 50 miles of maintained hiking trails within Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Apostle Islands National Lakeshore / Facebook There are also several boardwalk paths as well as sandy beaches that are ideal for walking. Two of the most popular mainland trails are the Meyers Beach Sea Caves Trail, a 4.6-mile, moderately difficult trail, and the more challenging Lakeshore Trail, an 11-mile out-and-back trek. Out on the lake, Devils Island has some of the most dramatic sea caves, as well as a colorful coastline to explore. Posnov via Getty Images There are several short trails (all under one mile long) surrounding the historic Devils Island Light, which can be toured during the summer months. Over on Sand Island, the Circumnavigation Trail is longer, but lovely, leading you around the entire island. The trail stretches for 15 miles total, but can be broken up into shorter portions. Madeline Island, though not part of the National Lakeshore, is worth a visit too. troutnut/iStock via Getty Images Plus It's the only Apostle Island accessible by car (via ferry) and the beautiful Big Bay State Park is always a delight. One of the most enjoyable ways to experience the Apostles is to simply sit back, relax, and wait for a splendid Lake Superior sunset. Posnov / Moment Open Collection via Getty Images Of course, a clear moonrise over the sea caves can be equally breathtaking. Posnov via Getty Images The Apostle Islands are located off the forested tip of Northern Wisconsin, and the nearest mainland city is Bayfield, a hamlet that's home to fewer than 500 people. JenniferPhotographyImaging via Getty Images Bayfield is about a four-hour drive from Minneapolis or six hours from Milwaukee. From Bayfield, there are several ways you can get to the Apostles. You can take a car ferry to Madeline Island, hop on Apostle Islands Cruises (an excursion tour boat) or hire a local charter boat. If you're feeling adventurous, hire a sea kayak outfitter and paddle your way into this rugged paradise. Keep in mind that many of these outfitters require a short safety class before you're allowed out on the lake without a guide. No matter how you choose to explore the Apostle Islands, one thing is certain: you will never forget them. General Information about the Apostle Islands: Accessibility: The National Park Service has taken many measures to improve the accessibility of the islands, including adding paved paths and boardwalks, accessible campsites, and accessible features to the visitor centers. For more information about accessible areas, click here. Pet Friendly: Leashed pets are allowed. Parking: paid overnight parking ($10) is available at the Apostle Islands Bayfield Headquarters. Seasonal Access: The Islands are open all year but are more challenging to access during the shoulder seasons and winter. The ferry shuts down for a period of time each winter when the ice prevents boats from crossing. Cost: There’s no entrance fee, but there are fees for camping and lighthouse tours. You forget where you are and are just completely in the moment. Ruby Falls in Tennessee is one of those places. Ruby Falls isn’t as much an attraction, as it is an experience. Sure, Ruby Falls is the tallest and deepest underground waterfall open to the public in the United States. And the mountain overlook directly overhead allows for some of the most spectacular views of the Tennessee Valley, Cumberland Plateau, and Tennessee River – not to mention epic outdoor recreation. But Ruby Falls is so much more than numbers or bullet points. It’s one of the most magical places you’ll ever visit. You might not expect an underground waterfall to be found atop a mountain, but this is not your average waterfall. Matt S./Management/TripAdvisor The access point for Ruby Falls sits at the peak of Lookout Mountain, located on the border to Tennessee and Georgia. Ruby Falls opened to the public in 1929, and it has quite a romantic history. Ruby Falls/Facebook Ruby Falls was discovered by Leo Lambert, a chemist and cave enthusiast who found the underground falls somewhat accidentally. Lambert was drilling an elevator shaft into the adjacent Lookout Mountain Cave in 1928 so he could efficiently lower tourists into the grand cavern, which is the second-longest known cave in the region. But then, Lambert happened upon something truly remarkable: a stunning cascade spilling 145 feet down a narrow shaft in the limestone that had remained untouched and inaccessible to the outside world prior to his endeavor. Ruby Falls He named the falls after his wife, Ruby, in what is perhaps one of the sweetest gestures of all time. On December 30, 1929, the Lookout Mountain Caverns opened to the public, and the following June, the Ruby Falls Cave was expanded and opened as well. Ruby Falls/Facebook Ruby Falls quickly became a favorite attraction for explorers, adventures, families - and even lovers. In 1930, the very first wedding was held in this underground wonderland. Nearly a century later, Ruby Falls remains one of Tennessee's greatest natural wonders. Ruby Falls/Facebook Lookout Mountain Cave is no longer open to the public, as tourists overwhelmingly preferred visiting the magnificent underground waterfall, but its history is fascinating in its own right. Unlike Ruby Falls Cave, Lookout Mountain Cave could be accessed by the outside world, and there is evidence that animals and humans alike used the cave dating back to prehistoric eras. Lookout Mountain Cave also served as a shelter for both Union and Confederate soldiers during the Civil War, many of whom carved their names into its walls. Today, Ruby Falls invites everyone to experience its glory. Ruby Falls/Facebook There are a variety of guided tours available, and the one-mile cave walk is definitely family-friendly. Ruby Falls/Facebook The pathway is narrow and can be slick in places, but there are handrails to assist your journey deep beneath the mountain. You'll want to take your time in the caverns to soak up what's around you. Ruby Falls The geological formations are completely stunning and almost otherworldly. The cave surrounding Ruby Falls was formed over 200 million years ago as an underground stream fed by rainwater slowly eroded the limestone. It’s amazing to think about everything that converged to create this living geological work of art set within a mountain. Blimey2010/TripAdvisor The delicate formations we see today - including stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and drapery ribbons - are an impressive display of nature's artistry. The most incredible part of the cavern is, of course, Ruby Falls. Ruby Falls/Facebook What makes Ruby Falls so unique is that this resplendent waterfall is completely underground. Its beauty will take your breath away. Since its beginnings, Ruby Falls has been a place for dreamers. Ruby Falls Ruby Falls's Lantern Tours are perhaps the most magical way to experience the underground falls. Small groups are led through the caverns with hand-held lanterns as the only light source. Rock formations, pristine pools, and shadows dance before your eyes. On the Lantern Tour, you’ll get to experience the cave in a unique and wonderful way. Ruby Falls With limited light, you'll hear the trickling waterfall first. The sound grows louder and louder, leading up to a grand reveal of Ruby Falls that will stop you in your tracks. It’s a sublime sensory experience and a moment you'll always remember. Above this subterranean wonder, the spectacular views atop Lookout Mountain are equally as enticing. Ruby Falls/Facebook Ruby Falls and Lookout Mountain are located just minutes outside of Chattanooga, and the city lights are lovely in the evening. But the views here are just as stunning by day. Ruby Falls In fact, the Lookout Mountain Tower attracts tourists from all over the United States (and the world). Ruby Falls/Facebook On a clear day, you can see into seven different states from the overlook! From here, you'll have an uninterrupted panorama of the Tennessee Valley. Ruby Falls/Facebook Outdoor enthusiasts and adventure seekers will delight in knowing they can take in these views while zip-lining across Lookout Mountain. Ruby Falls Ruby Falls's High Point Zip Adventure spans 700 feet and offers spectacular sights. Ruby Falls/Facebook It's worth conquering any fear of heights to experience Lookout Mountain like this. In the wilds of Tennessee, there exists a place that occupies two divine worlds simultaneously. Ruby Falls/Facebook Both above ground and far below, it will take your breath away. Ruby Falls is as intriguing today as it was back in 1929. joevare/Flickr One of the best experiences in life is that of wonder - of marveling at the wide, wonderful world. There may not be a place more marvelous - or wonderful - than Ruby Falls. Ruby Falls is one of the most incredible natural wonders you’ll ever see as you marvel at its magnitude and magnificence. You’ll be awestruck by this wonderful world we live in, where such beauty is possible – but often hidden. This is the experience that is Ruby Falls. Accessibility: Due to natural formations, narrow passages, and steps, the cavern is not wheelchair or stroller accessible; however, Ruby Falls is happy to discuss alternative arrangements for guests with other special accommodations. Pet Friendly: Pets are not allowed in Ruby Falls Cave. There are four shaded and fenced-in kennel areas available at no charge on a first-come, first-served basis. Parking: Parking is free; however, there is limited parking for large vehicles. Seasonal Access: Ruby Falls is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. all year long, with the exception of Christmas Day. Cost: Ruby Falls Cave Walk tickets are $22.95 for adults and $12.95 for ages 3-11 (children under 3 are free). Extra experiences, such as the Lantern Tour and High Point Zip Adventure, have additional charges. Other: Inside the caverns, it’s always a temperate 60 degrees, so dress accordingly! Learn more about Ruby Falls in Tennessee by visiting its website. And if you’re planning a trip to Ruby Falls while visiting Chattanooga, you’ll definitely want to consider lodging at Stone Ledge. It’s an utterly charming AirBnB located on a bluff on Lookout Mountain that offers spectacular and seemingly endless valley views. Looking for more inspiration for your next adventure?
