INTRODUCTION AND CONTROL POINTS

Yesterday, Sony announced the FE 85mm F1.4 GM II, the newest lens in its G
Master (GM) premium lens lineup. Sony's original 85mm F1.4 GM was one of its
first-generation GM lenses introduced in 2016 and is the last lens from the
original trio of GM optics to get a Mark II refresh. If you want to see sample
photos shot with the lens, make sure to check out our FE 85mm F1.4 GM II sample
gallery.

In this view, we can see some of the lens's primary features, including a
physical aperture ring with an 'A' setting, which shifts aperture control to the
camera, one of two customizable focus hold buttons, and the AF/MF switch.

Impressive improvements from the reviews I've read, especially compared to the
original and Sigmas offering. It's nice that companies keep on improving
products. If I had a Sony full frame body this lens would be on my bucket list.
There is always something tempting about products that lead the progress.

I had the Sigma 85mm Art and it was an amazing lens. I sold it because I hardly
ever shoot with an 85mm but if this lens is better then the Sigma it must be one
hell of a lens.

Such an unexciting lens isn't it! I have the Sony 90mm f2.8 macro and Sigma 90mm
f2.8 which kind of cover the bases whether you need an absolutely massive, heavy
slow (but macro) lens with terrible autofocus or whether you want a tiny, light,
lovely metal not macro but equally slow lens with completely mediocre autofocus.
I must therefore be at least somewhat in the market for a fast portrait lens
with great autofocus but I'm not feeling enough excitement for this one to give
it house room even if they were giving them away!

All fair comments, maybe I'm asking too much but for a portrait lens it would be
great to have something innovative and artistic - a bokeh control facility or
some sort of adjustable "character", for example a ring to create adjustable
deliberate flare or internal reflections. I'd be more tempted to get a Canon EF
85 f1.2 and adapt it, and perhaps try putting some silver foil around the baffle
in the adapter :-)

The newest Petzval lens has a 'Bokeh control' ring on it. I'm not sure exactly
how it works, but it sounds like what you're asking for.

missed chance - would have bought a f/1.2 or even better a f/1.0 at any price in
a heartbeat without consulting the family council 🤣

This is a mediocre update for video-shooters for the most part. Normal
portraiture oriented photographers will see a moderat update if at all.

For me an easy choice not to have g.a.s.

Sony did pretty well with the latest lenses like the G 20 .. 70 and G 70 .. 200
II and of course the GM 300 ( which I bought all ) but the GM 85 II seems the
most irrelevant lens in a long time for me.

Sony - in case you‘re reading here - I am your most wanted customer - money for
beautiful top notch gear is no object for me - make. 85 f/1.1 at € 4 k and I‘ll
buy it immediately - I‘ll even deposit the money for it in advance.

I like my GM 85 - it renders beautifully and it’s more thanks to the task with
AF and sharpness - this no need to buy this one for AF speed or sharpness.
But I would have bought an even creamier bokeh machine.

Let‘s wait for something faster now

See, for you it is a missed chance, you would have bought an f1.2 - and for me
the f1.2 would have been a missed chance, glad it is f1.4 Smaller, lighter,
faster! Works for me.

"make. 85 f/1.1 at € 4 k and I‘ll buy it immediately " - GOOD FOR YOU if you
have that money and willing to spend on a fairly minor additional background
blur. But I wonder how big the market would be for such a lens?

Different people want different things. The difference between 1.4 and 1.2 is
less than half a stop. For many people $1000 for a half stop is too much. And
for others they want every fraction.

Sony made a choice here. A good choice for some and not a good choice for
others.

Both are valid viewpoints.

we already had a top notch 85 f/1.4 - owning it for 6+ years now and counting

There is no point in shaving of 20 % in weight on a studio prime.

While traveling my G 20 .. 70 doubles well as a short Tele being tack sharp at
f/5.6 and almost half the weight of the current GM 85

A missed chance - Sony - I am ready to deposit € 4 k for a real GM85 successor

The 85GM was a slow focuser.
The 85/1.8 was much better for fast action like indoor sports.
This new lens is a great update for people that need excellent tracking.

It’s less important for the portrait shooters.

Sony don’t really care about one customer and that one customer demand, they
care about large segment because it’s there profits can be made this is the
whole reason this is 1.4 and not any faster simply because the segment for it is
considerably larger than 1.2 and drastically so compared to f1.

Also at 85mm a f1 would give an incredible shallow dof and the lens would be
monstrous big and heavy we are likely talking a 2kg lens and it for sure would
cost more than 4k

The new one is considerably sharper has modern AF/fps capabilities the old was
the worst GM ever made on those aspects, it was old style rendering type 85

Can someone please show me fast action indoor sports images wide open?

Don’t understand the need for a fast focusing indoor f/1.4 lens.

I would shoot fast indoor sport action with f/2.8 or so because nothing would be
in focus that’s of interest in sports.

A fast aperture is useless for that kind of situation IMHO

would be interested to see some shots.

Like

Joger it’s not for real sports event, it’s for planned action photography and
sports portrait etc. where you do actually need a fast reliable AF and fps much
the same reason 135 and other faster GM where equipped with that AF
capabilities.

It’s Niche for sure but it make sense you add it to a lens due for its
replacement circles anyway

someone in this forum said that Sony don’t really care about few customers but
about the mass market 🤣

I have no problem with Sony updating AF on cameras and lenses and make things as
good as they can - why should anyone dislike it?

f/1.2 is no niche and on my GM 50 it just shines - my G 20 .. 70 is equally
sharp as my GM 50 f/1.2 @ f/5.6 - probably nobody carries the fast GM 50 for
travel photography when a zoom can do the same at much lower weight.

Not building a GM 85 f/1.2 is a missed chance for everyone being interested in a
top notch portraiture lens from Sony and I may quote Dustin Abbott:

"While the 85GM II is a lens improved in every way, I think that Sony might have
missed an opportunity to create a standout lens by swinging for the fences with
an F1.2 lens"

There is a noticeable difference between adding capabilities to a general
product to cover niche fields and releasing a product mainly aimed for a niche.
One does not really add expenses especially as it’s a technology they already
wildly implement across products, it’s more a less already paid for in terms of
R&D.

Like many don’t really seem to understand what type of company Sony is. They are
in to generate sales and profit not to cater for the tiniest of desires and
demand. It exactly why they launch vlogging cameras, slow cheaper more compact
zooms etc. they are more into launching things that sell then catering for small
niche, they at best will toss capabilities in an existing product but launching
wild niche products they just aren’t the sort of company

No reason to assume Sony has no plans to also make an 85mm prime with an
aperture larger than f1.4. They almost certainly will.

agreed - people buying the mediocre update will certainly be in denial that the
extra speed matters - I guess Sony has similar plans as the GM 50 - which exists
as a top notch f/1.2 version and a slower f/1.4 version with less DOF
separation.

In principle this is a good thing - though I hate waiting 🤣

IMHO it might take a year or two until we'll see the real thing.

That said Sony has some other 'construction sites' where updates are overdue - I
hope they'll address them as well.

After the gorgeous GM 300 and the killer sharp GM 135 we need further ultra fast
primes. I'd not mind a GM 35 f/1.2 or 100 mm f/1.2 or 200 f/1.8

Leica as role model has done lots of specialty lenses and earns my respect for
doing that - unfortunately these don't work without AF for me.

Keep spending my money elsewhere in the meantime 🤣

Sony already told people they choose the 1.4 over the 1.2 because of sales data
and research… from what they have been saying it doesn’t exactly seem like they
have any intention to release it in any foreseeable future and if they
eventually do it’s going to be a several year long wait.

The 135 and 300 are standard speed it’s the equivalent of the 1.4 at those
ranges.

There's really no knowing what these companies are going to do and make. I will
say that this new 85mm f1.4 is smaller than most of the f1.2 offerings from
other makers, and it probably focuses faster too, so it's a product that
definitely has it's place and is differentiated from any f1.2 prime that they
decide to make, in addition to being at a lower price point relatively speaking.
But I can understand the desire and impatience for the lack of the latter if
that's what you're after.

Curious Photons

The entire photography market at this point is a niche! Selling a few million
cameras a year in a market of billions is a niche.

Because in essence the market for photo gear is a niche, I think the way to go
is to release signature products like f1.2 lenses.

Both can be true: this 85 f1.4 is a wonderful lens, and an 85 f1.2 would also be
welcomed by many. The fact that Sony can make a wonderful 85 f1.4 just makes me
want an 85 f1.2 all the more because we know Sony can make it special, just like
their 50 f1.2.

That being said, I also believe that Sony will not release an 85 f1.2 any time
soon and that this 1.4 lens will serve many very well.

Unfortunately, these old designs are nit holding up very well. Unless you like
it for they flaws, which some people call "character" - nothing wrong with that
at all.

For several years I used Zeiss/Contax lenses on my Sony with an adapter, sold
them all except the 28/2. Now Zeiss Batis are in my camera bag. Yes, their
performance has been surpassed, but I like them for their - ahem - character.

CHEERS.

Nikon ditched aperture rings 25 years ago, I'm fairly confident they won't bring
them back.

(That's not to say I don't think they should, and it's interesting to see more
and more new lenses come out with what is essentially a lens control ring "pre
mapped" to aperture.

They will. :) It takes time to settle into a design orthodoxy with a new system.
Canon and Nikon are showing the same growing pains in their mirrorless lens
designs as Sony did back in the day.

Sony has now locked down a very smart design template with declickable aperture
rings, custom buttons and multiple linear motors.

Come back in a few years and all Canikon lenses will follow that pattern.

I prefer Nikon's approach with the progeammable control ring. With Aony's
plethora of custom bittons and asignability, I'm suprised they locked in an
aperture ring. A friend who shoots Sony has taped down his aperture ring and
kept control on the camera. For the Z lenses that have a conteol ring i hae them
set for ISO. But to rubberdials' point; the early z 1.8 primes could use an
extea control ring.

I give Sony some deserved credit. When Sony puts out a vII lens, it tends to be
a significant and compelling upgrade. I've seen that several times over the
years.

I'm an Olympus/OMDS user. The OMDS idea of a vII lens tends to be a cosmetic
external redesign (9-18mm f/4-5.6) or merely a different front element coating
(12-40mm f/2.8 Pro).

Sony impresses me in that regard.
