processing to manufacturing scrap and spent battery recycling. Regional needs will drive government support actions, resulting in a blend of common and unique approaches to securing critical battery materials.
Innovations in battery materials will be an essential element in creating opportunity to diversify our energy storage solutions. Domestic battery recycling and material processing will ultimately be realized as

<p>The automotive industry has passed a tipping point when it comes to electrification, with many OEMs introducing increasingly optimistic forecasts for the future market share of electric vehicles. However, for
EVs to continue their momentum, new powertrains must achieve a reasonable balance between driving range, power, charge rate, safety, and cost. This requires OEMs to remain active in optimization of automotive
battery packs down to the cell and materials level. This presentation will describe BMW’s view of the role that different cell designs and chemistries can play in designing batteries for diverse EV applications.
Specifically, the impact of cell design and charging protocol optimization on battery lifetime (calendar and cycle aging) will be discussed. High-energy, fast-charging conditions are both known to negatively
impact cell degradation behavior, but novel cell and materials designs can combat these effects. Key challenges will be addressed with examples from BMW research projects.<br></p>

<p>Zenlabs has overcome poor cycling and high swelling associated with Silicon anode-based Lithium-ion cells. Zenlabs has developed large format pouch cells using pre-lithiated silicon anode that exhibit high
specific energy, fast charge, high power, and low cost. Our patented pre-lithiated silicon anode when paired with Nickel rich cathode enables Lithium-ion cells to have specific energy from 330 to 400 Wh/Kg. Our
Lithium-ion Pouch cells have cycled over 1500 DST cycles following USABC test protocols. Pouch cells exhibit 90% capacity recovery under the standard 15-minute charge test and have cycled 1000 times when cycled
at fast charge conditions of 4C charge and 1C discharge. Cell performance has been validated by US national labs in the USABC program.<br></p>

While the demand for batteries is more firmly established, the ability to supply those batteries for the US market is limited today and leading players are mostly coming from other regions where they have built capacity and expertise over the past decade. Without significant changes in the way the US views industrial policy and capital-intensive investments, the country runs the risk of being beholden to other regions for the supply of this critical technology. The presentation will attempt to predict if that material selection could change the place of the EV in society. 9:30 am Impact of EV Cell Design on Performance vs Lifetime Trade-Offs James McKinney, Battery Technology Engineer, BMW of North America The automotive industry has passed a tipping point when it comes to electrification, with many OEMs introducing increasingly optimistic forecasts for the future market share of electric vehicles. However, for EVs to continue their momentum, new powertrains must achieve a reasonable balance between driving range, power, charge rate, safety, and cost. This requires OEMs to remain active in optimization of automotive battery packs down to the cell and materials level. This presentation will describe BMW’s view of the role that different cell designs and chemistries can play in designing batteries for diverse EV applications. Specifically, the impact of cell design and charging protocol optimization on battery lifetime (calendar and cycle aging) will be discussed. High-energy, fast-charging conditions are both known to negatively impact cell degradation behavior, but novel cell and materials designs can combat these effects. Zenlabs has developed large format pouch cells using pre-lithiated silicon anode that exhibit high specific energy, fast charge, high power, and low cost. Our patented pre-lithiated silicon anode when paired with Nickel rich cathode enables Lithium-ion cells to have specific energy from 330 to 400 Wh/Kg. Our Lithium-ion Pouch cells have cycled over 1500 DST cycles following USABC test protocols. Pouch cells exhibit 90% capacity recovery under the standard 15-minute charge test and have cycled 1000 times when cycled at fast charge conditions of 4C charge and 1C discharge.
