Hi guys, I have a 2009 ML 3.0CDI. The tailgate has worked fine until several
months ago when it intermittently wouldn't close and had to be closed manually.
It opens from the drivers door, key fob and tailgate release. It now wont close
at all except by hand. I have now started to investigate the problem and as
usual there was standing water on the boot floor around the pump. I have dried
this area several times since I purchased the vehicle and sealed around the rear
lights. Having dried all this out again and checked connections I then moved on
to the rear SAM unit, but on my ML it has been relocated to under the right rear
passenger seat and didn't look in anyway damp. I have put 12Volts to the motor,
swapping the terminals and the tailgate will open and close no problem so I'm
assuming the motor/pump are fine? I have stripped out all the side panelling and
checked the wiring to the small unit in the boot from the motor and the wiring
is fine to that point. Everything else in the boot area works fine. I can set
the tailgate to various heights and it works fine it just wont close except by
hand. I'm going to take off the tailgate trim panels tomorrow to see if there
are any areas in there that could be causing this issue. The tailgate lock/latch
always pops open and pulls the tailgate closed perfectly. Any advice or help
from you guys would be very helpful Thanks in advance. Martyn.

There are anti pinch sensors on both sides of tailgate opening. If they don't
produce plausible value tailgate will not close.
With proper scanner look at actual values for both sensors.

Thankyou, I'm waiting on a scanner coming this week so will hopefully get some
joy from that! Having taken off the rear panel on the tailgate I didn't find
anything untoward in there. Thanks again.

Hi, I've read through that thread but still can't envisage where the pinch
sensors are? Are they behind the square plastic cover held on by one torques
screw on both sides of the tailgate or are they not visible and need code
reading? When I attempt to lower the tailgate there is nothing, no motor running
nothing until about 5 seconds of pressing the actuator operates the lock. I have
attached two pictures. The one that looks like a black penny washer is that a
sensor? Thanks again you two.

Sensor is rubber seal on left and right. It is pneumatic device. With tailgate
closed pressure inside goes HI. With tailgate open in goes LO. Safety logic in
rear end door control module looks for change of state HI/LO.
Imagine barely inflated bicycle tube with pressure gauge connected. It reads
1PSI. Now step on it. Because of volume change pressure will read a lot higher.

Haha yep got that and great analogy too. So is the pinch sensor located
elsewhere? And is that penny washer a sensor as it has wires to the back? Thanks
for the help and info it's much appreciated.

Had a chance to look at actual values for tailgate. Sensing strip is actually on
the outer edge not inner seal like I pointed earlier. It is super sensitive. Put
my finger on left strip and captured live data. This is X164 same thing like
W164.

Hey that's brilliant thankyou. I actually found a video link on YouTube and have
removed both strips and neither look brilliant! I will test them when I get the
code reader but the shocking news of the day is No Mercedes Dealer here in
England knew what this sensing strip was and even with my part numbers
A1648600118 or A1648600218 could find the part!! They have emailed Mercedes in
Germany, allegedly and say it can take 4-5 days to get a reply to see if the
part numbers were changed and to what numbers. Then we can look at availability
and cost. This is the YouTube link
The first image shows the sensor removed and the second picture shows the
sensor. I did send this info to the Merc dealer but as yet have had no reply.
Thanks for the help so far but please don't stop yet I think it may be a long
journey!!!

Hi guys, just a thankyou for all the help. Purchased a left and a right pinch
sensor, fitted and tested with the great news all's well now. Cost 140 of my UK
pounds but always worth it when you get a result so here's to years more
service.

My part numbers were A 164 860 01 18 and A 164 860 02 18 but the part supplied
was A 164 870 66 10 and A 164 870 65 10. They were a couple of inches short
compared to the ones I removed but are allegedly a direct replacement. I just
used a bit of rubber from the old one to cover the couple of inches.

Witek - Believe it or not, I now have this same issue as well (along with my
secondary air filter pump not working). Will the part number that Martdiamond
mentions above be the same for us here in the US? Also, looks like I'll be
changing the full plastic gaskets that go around the rear hatch on my 2009 ML
350 since they're in such bad shape. Any chance when I buy these new parts
(164-690-15-30-9051) that the pinch strips will be part of this assembly or are
they separate items that need to be purchased separately? I am thinking that
because I was messing around with the rubber gasket around the door to determine
if it was brittle that I somehow screwed up the pinch strips underneath the
gasket.

As an after thought I now have a code reader and after careful consideration and
the fact that I have multiple vehicles with family and friends I went for the
icarsoft CR Pro. When connected to the ML it actually could read the rear
tailgate function and showed both pinch strips as historic codes so I was then
able to clear them. This may help someone in the future especially as the couple
of dealers I tried here in the UK had never even heard of pinch strips!

Ran the codes and rear end door module (did not say which side) 988613 said
"contact strip 1 for anti-pinch protection has a malfunction. There is an open
circuit."

There are 2 wires inside the strip, which are changing resistance by touching.
If you disconnect the strip/sensor plug and put 4 kOhm resitor instead, the
tailgate works but throws a code however.
