VIDEO: AN INTERSECTIONAL APPROACH VIDEO: AN INTERSECTIONAL APPROACH Print By using an intentionally intersectional approach, companies can increase job satisfaction and cultivate a workplace where everyone belongs. And now that you know what intersectionality is and how to begin recognizing it, it’s time to take the next steps for creating belonging. This happens by asking two questions: What needs do we need to address? Before you can devise the right solution, you have to understand the problem. When it comes to improving the culture of your workplace, that means understanding the specific needs of your team.Have all members of a team individually create a list of marginalized identities and how they might intersect, then consider the difficulties each might face. For example, a non-citizen may worry about their immigration status. But what might a person with disabilities who is also a non-citizen worry about?Next, compare your list with the group's. Which identities were you missing? Which identities’ needs do you need to address today at your organization to create belonging? How do we address those needs? Once you and your team brainstorm these nuanced issues, it’s time to take action. But it’s essential to remember that how you take those steps is just as important as which steps you take. Here are a few tips:Be intentional about who you invite to the conversation. Ideally, one member from each identity should be present to help take part in the solution.Establish rules to protect those who are most vulnerable. While it might be easy to talk about addressing roadblocks to belonging in theory, it certainly isn’t for someone who experiences those on a daily basis.Encourage open communication and a culture of feedback. You cannot begin to cultivate a sense of belonging in your organization until you accept that people will disagree with you. It’s vital to encourage feedback and critique so everyone can grow and all can feel welcome. Intersectionality means “recognizing the complex experience of being a multifaceted person, an acknowledgement of the compounded identities within each person.” —La’Wana Harris, certified diversity executive Watch: For a deeper discussion about intersectionality and how some people encounter unique obstacles and require innovative solutions, watch this video from Newcastle University. Write down your various identities—from age to race to gender to sexuality to educational and class backgrounds—then identify where they overlap. Which of your identities afford you privileges? Which have led to discriminations and how? Understanding the complexity of yourself can help you begin to understand it in others. SHOW WHAT YOU KNOW True or False.
