lights and glittering Christmas trees decorating every corner. And London is

THESE ARE LONDON’S TOP 10 SECONDARY SCHOOLS, ACCORDING TO THE SUNDAY TIMES

 * Things to do
 * City Life

Choosing somewhere to mould your ‘orrible little wretch into a proper,
functioning human being is no easy task. Secondary schools vary immensely: some
are academic powerhouses designed to get kids into high-flying unis, some have
innovative, fresh curriculums, some have more of a focus on physical and mental
wellbeing – and some schools do all of that and more.  One of the most
prestigious and definitive rankings of schools is the Sunday Times Parent Power
Guide, which published its 2024 edition last weekend (December 3). This year
marked the 31st edition of the guide, which lists schools across the UK based on
everything from examination results and inspection reports to facilities and
lunches. Top of this year’s ranking of state schools in London came Wilson’s
School in Wallington. The boys’ grammar school beat many of the country’s most
famous private schools in its exam results. Second came Queen Elizabeth’s
School, a boys’ grammar school in Barnet, followed by the Henrietta Barnett
School, a girls’ grammar school in Hampstead Garden Suburb. These are the top
ten state secondary schools in London, according to the Sunday Times Parent
Power Guide 2024. Wilson’s School (Wallington) Queen Elizabeth’s School (Barnet)
The Henrietta Barnett School (Hampstead Garden Suburb) St Olave’s Grammar School
(Orpington) The Tiffin Girls’ School (Kingston) Tiffin School (Kingston) The
Latymer School (Edmonton) St Michael’s Catholic Grammar School (Finchley)

WATERLOO HAS JUST LOST ITS CROWN AS THE UK’S BUSIEST RAILWAY STATION

 * Travel
 * Transport & Travel

It’s official: Waterloo, holder of the title of the busiest railway station not
just for London but for the whole UK for no less than 16 consecutive years, has
finally lost its crown. It had 86.9 million entries and exits in the 2019-2020
year, but it now ranks as the third-busiest rail hub in the country. So what’s
changed? Well, the biggest change has been made by the opening of the Elizabeth
line. Since the new rail service started welcoming passengers in May 2022, it’s
carried 270 million passengers (roughly 4.3 million per week) and experienced
its busiest day ever just last week, with 769,000 journeys being made on
Wednesday December 6.  The Lizzie line has had a huge impact on rankings of the
UK’s busiest stations – and that’s shown by the new champ. None other
than Liverpool Street station is the new busiest train station in the country.
It’s estimated the station has welcomed an extra 50 million passengers. 50
million. That takes ’Pool Street up to 80.4 million passengers over 12 months.
Second place went to another Elizabeth line hub, Paddington, which had 59.2
million people pass through it.  There are some concerns from transport watchdog
London TravelWatch that the Elizabeth line is too heavily relied on, especially
in west London. After some overhead power cables broke last Thursday (December
7), 4,000 passengers were stranded for four hours.  Despite these problems
though, the impact that the Elizabeth Line has had on the capital is hard to
deny.  ‘Our officia

CHRISTMAS IN LONDON 2023

 * Things to do

Christmas in London is so magical that it makes the grim onset of winter (and
corresponding heating bills) feel suddenly worthwhile. As December arrives, the
city's streets begin to glow with sparkling Christmas lights and lavishly
decorated Christmas trees, all doing their best to melt the heart of the most
cynical Londoner.  There's no need to stay indoors and hibernate under a
blanket, either. Suddenly, the city's full of endless festive things to do. You
can book a trip to a trad (or cheeky) pantomime, revisit your favourite
Christmas films at special screenings, risk your ankles gliding around
oh-so-pretty ice rinks and drink your fill of mulled wine at any number of
Christmas knees-ups. Winter pop-ups will do their best to get you to try curling
or drinking eggnog, Christmas markets flog stocking stuffers galore, and
London's boutiques and shops have a permanent soundtrack of jolly Christmas
songs. And if you need somewhere to stay? Check out London’s best Christmas
hotels. Our handy rundown of festive events for Christmas 2023 in London has
everything you need to make your yuletide truly merry. And be sure to check back

THE BEST CHRISTMAS MARKETS IN LONDON FOR 2023

 * Shopping
 * Markets and fairs

Christmas shopping season is looming. Yes, you could be ruthlessly efficient
about it and grab all your presents online, months before the big day. But why
not support small businesses and have a fun time all in one go, by visiting one
of London’s many markets? There are year-round faves like foodie
paradise Borough Market or houseplant haven Columbia Road Flower Market. But,
at Christmas? Well, that’s when London’s markets really come into their own.
Every year, throughout November and December, the city fills up with markets
where you can buy the kind of handcrafted, unusual festive pressies you’d never
get on the high street. Keep your eye on London's xmas market dates: they're
perfect for browsing as the big day looms, your spirits kept high by mulled wine
stalls and an endless soundtrack of Christmas songs.  Vintage furniture,
ceramics, cool cards or handknitted woollens... you’ll find everything you need
to make someone’s Christmas Day memorable at London's pop-up markets. Or keep
things simple by rocking up to that oh-so-touristy Southbank German-style chalet
market and doing your Christmas shopping in one chaotic swoop on the 24th, and
having a bit of fun into the bargain.  Recommended: Our complete guide to
Christmas in London.

THIS BELOVED SOUTH LONDON LIDO REOPENS NEXT WEEK

 * Things to do
 * City Life

Heads up, open-air swimming fans: beloved south London swim spot Tooting Bec
Lido is set to make a triumphant return after a protracted period of closure.
The pool has been a favourite among both locals and visitors since it opened in
1906 – and now it’s had a massive revamp.  Tooting Bec Lido’s glow-up cost £4
million and brings a host of new features that’ll improve the overall experience
of its patrons. Installed so far is new pumping equipment, pipework and a
pumphouse, as well as new paving around the pool and pool lining. Eventually, a
future project will see the lido get a new entrance, new café, winter clubroom,
gender-neutral showers and toilets.  Tooting Bec Lido’s revamp looks pretty
swish – but it hasn’t been the smoothest process. The pool was shut last
November and only supposed to be closed for nine months, but the reopening was
delayed by the discovery of asbestos.  But now the wait is finally over. The
lido is set to reopen on Monday, December 18 to (some very brave,
cold-resistant) South London Swimming Club members, ahead of a formal reopening
to the general public in spring. Not a South London Swimming Club member and
can’t wait until next spring? Here are ten incredible places to go wild swimming
near London.  Did you see that South Kensington tube station is getting a
massive makeover? Plus: London has been named one of the world’s best cities
(again). Listen to Time Out’s brilliant podcast ‘Love Thy Neighbourhood’: the
Christmas special with Paloma Fai

LONDON IS GETTING AN EXHIBITION ALL ABOUT CUTENESS IN 2024

 * Art
 * Art

Who doesn’t love cute things? But how much have you actually thought about how
cuteness influences culture and society? A new exhibition at Somerset House is
going to explore just that. ‘CUTE’, opening in London on January 25 2024, will
look at all things cuddly, adorable and squashy, and examine exactly what makes
them, well, cute.  Running until April 14 2024, the exhibition will look at
emojis, memes, video games, toys, food and more. ‘CUTE’ promises to be ‘a
landmark exhibition exploring the irresistible force of cuteness in contemporary
culture’ which will ‘examine the world’s embrace of cute culture and how it has
become such an influential measure of our times’.  It will bring together
contemporary works from over 50 artists and contributors, as well as cultural
phenomena from fashion, toys, games and the internet. Some of the contributing
artists include Mark Leckey Sean-Kierre Lyons, Mike Kelley, Karen Kilimnik,
Nayland Blake, Cosima von Bonin and Hannah Diamond.  Image: Graphic Thought
Facility (1990, UK). Playing Dress Up With AI, 2023 In partnership with Japanese
toy company Sanrio, ‘CUTE’ will also have an entire section dedicated to Hello
Kitty, featuring a display of Kitty through the ages, a dedicated plushie space
and a disco. Say kawaii!  Can’t wait until January? From Philip Guston to
Hiroshi Sugimoto, these are the best art exhibitions on in the city right now.

HYDE PARK WINTER WONDERLAND

 * Things to do
 * Markets and fairs
 * Until 1 Jan 2024

The Grinch would have a real job stealing all the Christmas from Hyde Park’s
huge tribute to festive fun. The annual favourite is back for its sixteenth year
in 2023. Entry to Winter Wonderland is free during off-peak hours and either £5
or £7.50 during peak times, and you can head along for cheerily lit fairground
rides, a child-friendly Santa Land (including Santa’s grotto) and quaint
Christmas markets. It’s a real treat for anyone wanting to get into the festive
spirit – as long as you’re ready to hear all those songs as you potter around.
Other highlights of Hyde Park’s annual Christmas treat include circuses and the
biggest outdoor rink in the UK – it surrounds the Victorian bandstand and is
illuminated with more than 100,000 lights. There's also the Real Ice Slide, ice
sculpting workshops and a German-style Bavarian Village full of frothing steins
and live music. The usual line-up of rollercoasters and fairground rides is sure
to keep thrill-seekers happy. A good alternative for those who prefer to stay on
solid ground is the selection of themed bars with real fires, except for the Bar
Ice (for obvious structural reasons) where even the glasses you drink from are
made of ice. If you’re skating, be aware that while there’s no minimum age for
skaters, under-12s must be accompanied by someone 16 or over and the smallest
skates for hire are children's size 9 (adult skates
