Colorectal cancer is the second-leading cause of death from cancer, and it
affects millions of people worldwide. The American Cancer Society says that
about 1 in 20 people will eventually get colon cancer. This quiet killer often
grows for many years before anyone notices anything wrong. Luckily, many studies
have shown that living a healthy lifestyle can greatly lower your chance of
colon cancer.

REGULAR COLORECTAL CANCER SCREENING

If there is a history of colon cancer in the family, men and women should begin
getting checked at 45 or younger. Screenings for colorectal cancer use a
bendable camera to look for polyps, and precancerous growths, in the gut and
remove them immediately.

If you find and remove polyps early on, you can reduce your chance of colon
cancer and avoid having surgery. Regular screenings can provide peace of mind
because signs are unclear.

LIMIT YOUR INTAKE OF REFINED AND RED MEAT.

Multiple big studies have shown that eating a lot of red meat and processed
foods raises the chance of colon cancer. Researchers from the World Cancer
Research Fund found that the chance of colon cancer increases by 17% for any 100
grams of red meat eaten daily.

Especially processed meats have been linked to colon cancer because they have
cancerous chemicals that form when cured and smoked. These chemicals can damage
the DNA in digestive system cells, which can cause genetic changes that may give
rise to cancer.

Nitrates and nitrites found in processed foods are believed to help colon cancer
grow. In short, both statistical and biological studies show that eating many
red and refined foods increases the chance of colon cancer. If you eat less of
these foods, your chance may go down.

MANAGING BODY WEIGHT

Several big studies have found that having a higher body weight makes you more
likely to get colon cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, fat people
are 60% more likely to get colon cancer than people with a healthy weight. There
are several possible ways to explain this link.

Higher amounts of insulin and growth factors similar to insulin are linked to
having more body fat. This can help colon cancer cells grow and stay alive. Fat
tissue also makes molecules that cause inflammation. These molecules can harm
DNA and help cancer grow. A higher BMI has also been shown to upset the microbes
in the gut in ways that help colon tumours grow.

The strong proof is that a higher body weight greatly increases the chance of
colon cancer. This is likely due to hormone changes, inflammation, and the
microbiome. Even a small amount of weight loss from food and exercise can lower
the chance of colon cancer. So, to avoid colon cancer, you should focus on
keeping a healthy weight.

MAINTAIN YOUR PHYSICAL FITNESS

Many studies have shown that being less active makes you more likely to get and
die from colon cancer again. On the other hand, regular exercise makes it much
less likely that you will get colon cancer or die from it. Physical exercise
regularly has many benefits, some of which can help avoid colon cancer. Exercise
reduces body fat and inflammation, raising colon cancer risk.

Exercise also makes bowel movements move faster and more often, so
cancer-causing chemicals have less time to build up in the gut. Research shows
that colon cancer survivors who work out at least 150 minutes of exercise per
week have a much lower chance of getting cancer again or dying from it than
survivors who don't work out.

After getting a cancer diagnosis, just beginning an exercise routine could
increase the chance of life by up to 60%. In conclusion, exercise is a positive
lifestyle change for preventing colon cancer and helping people who already have
it live longer. Priority should be given to getting daily exercise.

QUIT SMOKING

Several studies have shown that smoking is strongly related to a higher chance
of colon cancer. A 2020 review of 61 papers showed that people who smoke now are
40% more likely to get colon cancer than people who never used to smoke. The
danger goes up with how long and how much you smoke. Some studies show long-term
heavy smokers have a 60–100% higher chance.

There are many ways that smoking can make you more likely to get colon cancer.
Many carcinogens in cigarette smoke can cause DNA damage in gut cells. Smoking
also causes reactive stress and prolonged inflammation in the gut. Both of these
things are linked to the development of colorectal cancer.

Also, smoking changes the bacteria in the gut in ways that help colon cancer
grow. There is also proof that stopping smoking can lower the chance of
colorectal cancer by a lot over time. This shows that quitting smoking is an
important way to avoid colorectal cancer.

LIMIT ALCOHOL

Multiple big studies have shown that drinking alcohol, even in small amounts, is
associated with a higher chance of colon cancer. A 2019 review of 36 studies
discovered that each drink (12 oz. of beer, 5 oz. of wine, or 1.5 oz. of liquor)
you have daily raises your chance of colon cancer by 7%.

The risk went up even more as the amount of alcohol consumed went up. Having two
or more drinks daily was linked to a 50–60% higher risk. We don't fully
understand how alcohol increases the chance of colon cancer, but it probably has
something to do with the cancer-causing effects of acetaldehyde, which is made
when alcohol is broken down.

Acetaldehyde might harm DNA and make gut cells have chromosomes that don't work
right. Also, alcohol lowers the amount of folate in the body, which is crucial
for keeping DNA stable and lowering the risk of colon cancer. Luckily, a study
shows that drinking less or not at all may lower your risk of colon cancer. You
can avoid this sickness that can be prevented by drinking less booze.

LOOK FOR SYMPTOMS

Colorectal cancer might not display any signs or symptoms in its early stages.
However, several signs and symptoms can appear as the disease worsens. Some of
the most common signs of colon cancer are blood appearing in stool or rectal
bleeding, unintentional weight loss, and feeling like you need to go to the
bathroom again after you've already gone.

Colorectal cancer can also cause changes in bowel habits, stomach pain or
bloating, weakness and tiredness, and narrow stools. Even though common health
problems can also cause these symptoms, it is important to visit a doctor if
they don't go away or worsen over time. This could be a sign of colon cancer.

If colorectal cancer is trapped early, it can often be treated, but life rates
drop dramatically when it is more advanced. Since up to 90% of colon cancer
deaths happen in people whose disease has already spread, a doctor should check
out any rapid change in bowel habits, rectal bleeding, or weight loss.
