STEPPING STONES BREAKS GROUND FOR NEW RECOVERY CENTER THAT WILL PROVIDE CRUCIAL SUPPORT FOR MOTHERS WITH CHILDREN HealthLatest NewsNews Published on July 18, 2024 By Times Weekly Staff Facebook Twitter Pinterest WhatsApp Endeavor Health partners with Stepping Stones to open new facility Stepping Stones broke ground on what will be one of Illinois’ only licensed recovery centers providing housing for both mothers and their children, thanks in part to a significant grant from Endeavor Health’s Community Investment Fund. This new two-story, 8-unit apartment building in Joliet is set to offer a vital lifeline for mothers undergoing substance abuse treatment, allowing their children to stay with them while they receive the care they need. Endeavor Health has partnered with Stepping Stones for years, referring behavioral health patients who would benefit from their support and services. The $300,000 grant from Endeavor Health’s Community Investment Fund is an extension of that partnership, supporting much-needed capacity within the community. Paul Lauridsen, Executive Director of Stepping Stones, highlighted the importance of this initiative at a special groundbreaking ceremony last month: “There are very few options. There are people we have met who have gone as far as southern Illinois for a place where they could receive treatment and continue to be with their children.” This new facility addresses a significant gap in the current system, ensuring that mothers do not have to choose between their recovery and their families. Other speakers at the groundbreaking ceremony included Maria Manzo from Congressman Bill Foster’s Office, Will County Executive Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, Representative Natalie Manley, Senator Rachel Ventura, Senator Meg Loughran Cappel, Joliet City Councilman Pat Mudron, and Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow. “Our longstanding partnership with Stepping Stones has been integral in offering our patients the comprehensive support they need post-treatment,” said Gina Sharp, President of Endeavor Health Linden Oaks Hospital. “This new facility will provide crucial housing and resources for mothers and their children, supporting a holistic and family-centered recovery.” The new recovery center comes at a crucial time, with a similar facility in Chicago closing last year, leaving only one other licensed center in Charleston, IL. Stepping Stones’ new center will alleviate the strain on mothers who would otherwise face the tough decision of separating from their children to seek treatment. “I work with women today, and that is a huge issue,” Amie Toste explained at the ceremony. “It makes you feel so horrible inside that you have to step away from your children to get better. But, you know, if you’re not going to get better, you’re not going to be able to help your children.” Toste is a former Stepping Stones client who now works for the agency as a recovery support specialist.
