EMOTIONAL SPENDING

90% of spending decisions are based on emotions

Wow, that’s a scary thought and guess what, marketers and retailers know exactly
how to play on those emotions and get you to spend your money. Happiness,
achievement, sadness, anger, guilt, jealousy, or fear are emotions that result
in you parting with your money. We all buy things out of emotion sometimes, and
emotions themselves are a vibrant part of life. A mindful and intentional plan
doesn’t discount our emotions or pretend they don’t exist. Identifying those
triggers will help you develop a new habit in those experiences rather than
spending money.

START WITH YOUR WHY

If you don’t have a solid why, you won’t work to achieve it

Financial literacy is having the skills and knowledge that allows you to make
informed decision in handling all of your financial resources. Education is key
to a sound financial future. That right there is your why.

The first step in creating a financial plan is goal setting. This is another why
… why is goal setting important? The only way to reach goals is to set them in
the first place. Your focus should not just be on budgeting, investing, etc. but
on your goals, and that will provide motivation for you to lay the groundwork
necessary to reach those financial goals.

FINANCIAL WOES

Been there done that

When my husband and I were first married in the early 1980s, we lived paycheck
to paycheck. I say that, but often our minimal paychecks didn’t even cover our
spending to make it to the next paycheck. We had no financial goals, We spent
very little money back then because we simply didn’t have it. I remember cutting
pictures out of magazines and putting them into $1 frames to use for our home
decor—so that we’d at least have something on our walls. I know what it’s like
to not have money. We’re in a much healthier financial situation and I can tell
you, life is much easier to navigate without money worries.

“In life, I’ve had problems when I’ve had money. I’ve had problems when I
haven’t had money. And all in all, when you have problems, it’s better to have
money.”
