Ottawa—Gov. Gen. Mary Simon’s office has confirmed it was subjected to a hacking
attempt, announcing Thursday an incident of “unauthorized access to its internal
network.”

The Office of the Secretary to the Governor General (OSGG) says it is working
with the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security to investigate the matter, including
taking immediate action to strengthen its network.

“While the nature and the scope of the breach are still under investigation, the
OSGG is continuing its work with experts and pursuing further network
improvements as needed. In addition, the OSGG has been in communication with the
Office of the Privacy Commissioner in response to this incident,” a news release
notes.

The office is primarily responsible for supporting the governor general in
fulfilling her constitutional, state and ceremonial duties. The office also
plans and implements the governor general’s schedule of activities, including
those related to her role as Commander-in-Chief of Canada.
