(Photo: Getty Images) Holiday Travel FIND YOUR JOY AT 9 FESTIVE STAYS AROUND THE GLOBE By Terry Ward Life is for living — and celebrating. And when the festive season approaches, you can join in cultural celebrations around the globe — and make a unique nearby hotel your home base to be close to all the fun. Maybe you’ll make it to Germany to glug mulled wine under a canopy of twinkling lights at one of the treasured Christmas markets. Or perhaps having your face painted with bones and hollow eyes and putting flowers in your hair for Day of the Dead in Mexico is more up your alley? From storied festivals of light in India and Thailand to pumpkin mania amid New England’s autumnal backdrop, the world is waiting to welcome you into its festive fold this season. As always, check for travel guidelines and closures before planning your trip. FIND HOLIDAY MARKET MAGIC IN BUDAPEST, HUNGARY With towering pines all decked for the season and something warm to drink always at the ready, Budapest’s largest and much-beloved Christmas market takes over Vörösmarty Square in the heart of the city from mid-November until the new year. Strolling here to browse handmade gifts and sweet Hungarian pastries among the crowds is sure to bring on the holiday glow. Less than a 10-minute walk from the twinkling lights and warm hospitality of Vörösmarty Square, the Belle Epoque Matild Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Budapest mixes Hungarian heritage with modern comforts. Mingle with other guests and locals at the hotel’s rooftop bar, The Duchess, and at the on-site gastronomic delight, Spago by Wolfgang Puck. SEE THE LIGHT(S) IN FLORENCE, ITALY See the holiday lights in Florence, Italy. (Photo: Getty Images) Paris might be the official City of Light, but Italy’s Florence can certainly hold a candle to it — especially during the F-Light Festival, which runs for about a month every winter, from the beginning of December until just after the New Year. The city’s famous medieval bridge, the Ponte Vecchio, dazzles with lights and is a good place to start your walking tour. After dark, across Florence’s historic heart, you’ll see artistic installations and projections illuminating the city’s most famous buildings and squares, letting the city shine in an entirely new light than the daytime hours allow. Settle into one of the sumptuous rooms at Sina Villa Medici, Autograph Collection, set within a historic 19th-century Palazzo in the city’s heart. You’ll be right near the Arno River and within a 15-minute stroll of the Ponte Vecchio. The hotel’s garden pool is tucked into a surprising parklike setting, and the concierge can arrange day tours to go wine tasting in Chianti and other nearby regions. GOOD CHEER AWAITS IN COLOGNE, GERMANY Snack on glühwein as you shop at the market in Cologne, Germany. (Photo: Getty Images) Themed Christmas markets can be found in the various cozy quarters of Cologne from mid-November right up until just before Christmas Day. But the grandest of them all is the Weihnachtsmarkt am Kölner Dom, which spills onto the plaza and streets surrounding the famous Cologne Cathedral with copious offerings of heart-shaped gingerbread, glühwein (mulled wine) and more. There’s even a “train” on wheels, the Christmas Market Express, to roll you to some of the other Christmas markets around town. Within a quick walk (less than 10 minutes) of Cologne’s main train station and the Cologne Cathedral, the stylish Cologne Marriott Hotel is ideally located for a day of sightseeing (and market-hopping). Plus, it offers a lavish breakfast buffet spread of German breads, meats and cheeses. You’re within blocks of the Rhine River here, too, for fresh air with water views. GLOW ON AT AN INDIAN FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS IN MUMBAI, INDIA Travel to Mumbai for the annual light festival. (Photo: Getty Images) Mumbai shines brightest during the annual Diwali celebration, when Lord Ganesh and the Goddess Lakshmi are celebrated as part of India’s most important holiday of the year. The festival’s date is based on the Hindu lunar calendar and falls between roughly mid-October and mid-November. Candles, fireworks and oil lanterns shine; flowers are offered; and feasts ensue for five consecutive days as Hindus give prayers and puja (homage) to the goddess to invite peace, wealth and prosperity into the Hindu new year. Mumbai’s streets get covered in colored sand that forms the shape of lotus blossoms — another sign of welcome to beloved Lakshmi. You can stay rooted in the joyful spirit of the festival just outside the doors of the ITC Maratha, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Mumbai while enjoying some respite at this super luxurious property sprawled across 5.5 acres in the heart of Mumbai. The hotel’s guest rooms and atmospheric public spaces are decorated with themes, carvings and architectural elements that evoke the spirit of the subcontinent’s bygone empires. LIGHT UP THE NIGHT IN CHIANG MAI, THAILAND Release symbolic lanterns in Thailand. (Photo: Getty Images) There is something sublime and soothing about gathering among the reverent residents of Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand as they release lanterns into the air during the annual Yi Peng Lantern Festival. This ethereal event usually takes place in November on the full moon of the 12th month of the Thai lunar calendar. Sending the lanterns skyward is symbolic of releasing negative energy and is also thought to welcome good fortune into the new year. Traditionally, the festival marked the end of the monsoon season and the beginning of cooler temperatures on the horizon. It’s a hopeful time to be in a beautiful Thai city brimming with history and lore. Stay within steps of Chiang Mai’s vibrant night markets at Le Méridien Chiang Mai, where you can cool off in the five-star hotel’s outdoor pool while gazing upon panoramic views of Doi Suthep Mountain. Then amble just 10 minutes to the Nawarat Bridge and the banks of the Ping River to watch the glowing paper lanterns soar toward the heavens. CELEBRATE THE DAY OF THE DEAD IN MEXICO CITY, MEXICO Every culture has its way of mourning the dead and honoring ancestors. And if you’re lucky enough to be in Mexico City over Día de los Muertos — aka Day of the Dead — you’ll bear witness to parades, ofrendas (offerings), and lots and lots of skull decorations all over the city. And while celebrations in Mexico City and elsewhere in the country (Oaxaca is the most famous epicenter for Dia de los Muertos events) play out during all of October and into November, the holiday is on November 1 and 2 ,when spirits are thought to return to visit the living world And Mexico’s City’s largest public square, the Zócalo, really comes to life during this time. Situated in Mexico City’s major business district with direct access to Centro Santa Fe (one of Latin America’s largest shopping malls), The Westin Santa Fe, Mexico City has stunning city views and an excellent on-site spa for when it’s time to detox after all the celebrations. SPOOKY MEETS SPECTACULAR IN NEW YORK STATE See the handcrafted jack o’lanterns in New York State. (Photo: Getty Images) For an all-American fall and Halloween extravaganza that’s hard to top, head to the Hudson Valley from mid-September through late-November for an over-the-top walk-through display of hand-carved pumpkins and a backdrop of thousands of synchronized lights. The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze has been called “autumn’s answer to a winter wonderland” by the New York Times. And the displays you can look forward to strolling past (and sometimes through!) include a 24-foot spiderweb, life-size dinosaurs and a working carousel. It’s easy to settle in and stay awhile at SpringHill Suites by Marriott Tarrytown Westchester County, with spacious rooms that are perfect for families to kick back in after what’s sure to be a fun and exhausting time at the festival, just a 25-minute drive north. You can also enjoy the hotel’s free hot breakfast buffet to start your day. LIGHT JACK-O-LANTERNS AND WALK WITH ZOMBIES IN NEW HAMPSHIRE The New Hampshire Pumpkin Festival may well be the pitch-perfect New England fall experience and lures visitors and locals to the quaint town of Laconia in New Hampshire’s Lakes Region for jack-o’-lantern-oriented fun. The goal is to amass the largest number of carved and illuminated pumpkins in one place in an attempt to tie or beat the world record, and it’s incredible to see how creative participants get with their art. Other activities include the evening Zombie Walk (come decked for a zombie apocalypse), pumpkin bowling and a kids costume parade. Just two miles away from the pumpkin mania, TownePlace Suites by Marriott Laconia Gilford sits in the foothills of the White Mountains and is a family favorite thanks to the indoor pool and cozy fire pit lounge area outside. SEE GOURD-EOUS DISPLAYS IN DALLAS Explore the gourd displays in Dallas, Texas. (Photo: Getty Images) More pumpkin madness awaits in the Lone Star State, where you can head to the gourdcentric Autumn at the Arboretum festival, held on the grounds of the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden.
