I did some looking around and in the OECD countries, Costa Rica is the worst,
followed by the US. Then Israel I suppose?

If you look around at other statistics, it's obvious that even being poor in
Israel is safer and better than being ostensibly not poor in the US.

I agree that poverty should not be a thing in Israel, but I'd rather be a poor
kid with a cohesive family there than in the dog-eat-dog US where you're
essentially on your own from the age of 14 or so.

These data are based on 2023 data- mostly before the destruction of Gaza, the
downgrading of Israeli bonds, the drop in investment and huge chunks of workers
being drafted and not at productive employment. 2024 data will be worse.

There is no way to solve Israel's poverty problem without breaking the
stranglehold that the ultraorthodox have on government budgets enabling them to
maintain 20% of the population in a permanent state of self imposed ignorance
and poverty. If this population were required to work for a living like every
other normal part of society and the enormous resources showered on the ultra
orthodox for political patronage was made available to those truly impoverished
due to their circumstances and not their choice of lifestyle, Israel would be in
a much more favourable position amongst the other OECD nations. Just as the
shortage of manpower in the army, a critical life and death problem for the
country, is totally attributable to the surrendering by governments to the ultra
orthodox extortion, so to the problem of poverty, government deficits, and
overall economic growth are directly attributable to this dystopian Faustian
arrangement with the leadership of the ultraorthodox sector.
