Years later, when I started experimenting with alcohol, the rebel in me wanted to prove that label wrong. It turned into a coping tool to hide (other) parts of me that I thought were wrong and unlovable. I drank to ignore the part of me that drank. I drank to help with anxiety that I didn’t understand.. and made it worse. By the time I had the family I dreamt of, alcohol was the only thing I knew that would calm the chaos in my head. Finally, as a busy mom of three young kids, it was time for me to put myself first, and live the life I deserve. I was tired of locking myself away with alcohol. I was tired of missing precious moments with my children, chasing “me” time with a drink. Alcohol was the thing keeping me from ME the most! It wasn’t working. AA was not for me. There is power in community, but I am not powerless or an alcoholic (and I don't think you are, either). This Naked Mind changed my life.
