December 6, 2022 (San Diego’s East County) – A storm system is bringing rain
this week to area valleys and mountains. After last night’s rainfall, a new
storm system will move in Tuesday, with light rains and colder weather. A
dusting of snow is forecast as low as 4,500 in East County’s mountain
communities.

Winds and wet weather may produce difficult driving conditions. Wind gusts could
reach up to 55 miles per hour over mountain peaks and ridges, and through
wind-prone canyons and passes. Use caution, particularly with high-profile
vehicles.  Be prepared for delays and carry chains if driving at higher
elevations.

December 6, 2022 (La Mesa) - In San Diego, we do not have snow for Christmas.
For many, it isn't Christmas without snow. In "The Gifts of The Magi" presented
by Lamplighter's Theatre, the character City Her asks the question: how can I
tell the Fourth of July from Christmas without snow? The Narrator, Willie
Porter, sums up the Christmas season with his reply: people are
uncharacteristically civilized.  That’s a term I fell in love with immediately
because it's so apt.

By Miriam Raftery

December 5, 2022 (Jamul) – The Jamul Dulzura Community Planning Group (JDCPG)
held two public hearings on the Jamul Casino Hotel and Event Center project
planned by Jamul Indian Village (JIV). On November 19, the planning group chair
Preston Brown sent a letter to JIV Chairwoman Erica Pinto stating that the
tribal environmental impact report (TEIR) was “extraordinarily incomplete and
premature for a project of this magnitude.” The planning group recommended the
No Project Alternative.

The hotel would be 16 stories with floor-to-ceiling glass; the project would
also include an indoor-outdoor event center and additional parking, but no new
gaming.

ECM reached out to Chairwoman Pinto to request an interview. She initially
agreed, but cancelled due to a trip to Washington D.C. to meet with Department
of the Interior Secretary Deb Haaland on other matters.  ECM sent written
questions and requested a new interview date, but no response has yet been
received. The Jamul Casino employees approximately 1,000 people and has provided
economic security for the Jamul Indian Village of California's tribal members,
many of whom lived in poverty in the past. The new project, if built, would
significantly expand employment opportunities in the area as well as economic
growth for the tribe.

County planner Scott Christman has said the project does not need approval of
county Supervisors or the Governor, and the tribe has previously indicated it
hoped to begin construction this month. However the the JDCPG contends that
since the casino was built based on certain conditions and legal requirements
being met, some of which have not been completed, the project thus does need
approval/cooperation/participation of both Supervisors and the Governor.

Reviewed by Pennell Paugh

December 4, 2022 (San Diego) -- The Body in the Barrel is a compelling crime
novel set in 1973 in San Diego.

The book opens on October 15, 1973: “I shifted the Smith & Wesson Model 10 to a
more comfortable place on my hip, which was feeling tender this morning. The bay
had a smell of rotting plants, and together with the smell of the diesel it
triggered thoughts about the Mekong—which was not so long ago, even if it was
half a world away. It was the reason my hip ached, but that life was over. I was
back home in San Diego, and glad for it. Whatever I’d thought I was going to
accomplish in the Navy’s swift boats turned out to be a bad dream. A nightmare.
So, the fact that I ended up in the Harbor Police is a whole lot better—but
still a whole lot of not much. I was out of the shit storm and into a more
peaceful life, but for crying out loud, at twenty-eight here I was with nothing
really going on, already going nowhere. But who cared? Other than my dad, I
guess, and that only went so far.”

East County News Service

December 4, 2022 (San Marcos) – The battle to protect nearly 2,000 acres in San
Diego’s North County from development is over. Two years after voters approved
ballot Measure B to block construction of the controversial Newland Sierra
housing project previously approved by San Diego’s Board of Supervisors, one of
the project’s leading opponents, Golden Door spa, has acquired the property to
preserve it as open space and wildlife habitat for generations to come.

“We are excited to finally secure this remarkable benefit for climate action
initiatives,” said Kathy Van Ness, General Manager and Chief Operating Officer
of Golden Door.  “Protecting this property reflects our deep commitment to
sustainability, which we believe is part of our responsibility to our community
and beyond.  Caring for the incredible resources on this site is a way we can
truly contribute to our shared climate action goals.”

Nathan Fletcher, Chair of the County of San Diego Board of Supervisors,
applauded this unique win-win opportunity for the region.
