THE APPLE WATCH’S DOUBLE TAP GESTURE POINTS AT A NEW WAY TO USE WEARABLES

Swipes and buttons are the norm, but Apple’s double tap gesture opens a future
where your smartwatch could be even less dependent on your phone.

A brief, early look at the new Apple Pencil’s hidden USB-C port.

Apple’s new $79 Pencil is mostly notable for what it doesn’t include; pressure
sensitivity, wireless pairing, wireless charging, or a double-tap shortcut. But
you can check out its selling point, a stealthy USB-C port, in this short hands
on video. It can charge from USB-C iPads without an adapter or the awkward
fragility of previous Lightning-equipped styluses when it releases next month.

The USB-C port gets revealed by sliding up the cap of the Pencil. Image:

Twitter’s decline in charts.

X marks the spot, now located far below where it was last year ever since Elon
Musk started meddling. The WSJ maps the decline in terms of active users, app
downloads, ad money spent, and perceived value using lots of easy to understand
charts.

Intel is moonlighting as an AI software developer.

The Information: “Intel is working with multiple consulting firms to build
ChatGPT-like apps for customers that don’t have the expertise to do it on their
own.”

Boston Consulting Group: “with a custom natural language chatbot interface
powered by Intel AI hardware and software, BCG employees were able to retrieve
and summarize information via semantic search that was previously buried in long
lists of multi-page documents.”

Maybe a new business for Intel, maybe just prep for Windows 12.

Mark Zuckerberg says AI might get to a place where it just generates content in
your feeds.

This is not a future that I like or one that I think will happen, but it’s a way
things could go.

Here’s the full quote, as part of predictions from Zuckerberg about AI, from
Meta’s Q3 2023 earnings call (emphasis mine):

> What I predict is… I do think that the fundamental technology around
> generative AI is going to transform meaningfully how people use each of the
> different apps that we build. For the feed apps, I think that over time, more
> of the content that people consume is going to be either generated or edited
> by AI. Some of it will be… creators will now have all these tools to make
> content more easily and more fun. And I think over time, maybe we’ll even get
> to the point where we can just generate content directly for people based on
> what they might be interested in.

Zuckerberg also shared an update on Threads.

Praise be, watchOS 10.1 fixes that weather bug.

If you’ve been annoyed by watchOS 10’s penchant for blank weather
complications... good news. Apple says that updating to the watchOS 10.1 public
release will fix that issue and has published a support document on the issue.
If updating doesn’t work, the document also gives you some troubleshooting
instructions.

For Android’s 15th birthday, Google revisited the great cheeseburger emoji
debate.

After 15 years of Android, Google’s blog post walking down memory lane didn’t do
much for me beyond one note about 2017’s Android 8 (Oreo) launch and the big
emoji problem that was so important that CEO Sundar Pichai got involved.

For some reason, the Android 8.0 emoji for cheeseburger and beer had some odd
mistakes (the originals are on top, see if you can spot the differences) that
were fixed a few months later with the release of Android 8.1.

Doctor Who’s next three adventures finally have release dates.

“The Star Beast” will air on November 25.

“Wild Blue Yonder” will air December 2.

“The Giggle” will air December 9.

All three episodes will air on BBC in the UK, and Disney Plus in the US and
elsewhere. They’ll also mark the official return of David Tennant as the Doctor
(it’s complicated), Russell T. Davies as showrunner, and Catherine Tate as the
best of the modern companions, Donna Noble.

Damn, it feels good to be a gangsta.

You could be forgiven for thinking the Yakuza series was nothing more than a
slice-of-life, coming-of-age comedy about a bunch serious-faced dudes navigating
life in Kamurocho, Japan. And the new trailer for Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth
continues to do nothing to disabuse you of that notion.

The trailer highlights Dondoko Island, a new location where Ichiban and the gang
can take a break from all the serious yakuza-ing they do to build houses, fish,
sing karaoke, and more.

This PC case has a 4K-tall touchscreen.

It’s the Hyte Y70 Touch, it’s $360 all by itself, and early reviews suggest it’s
not just a gimmick if you’ve got the cash.

I’m a three-monitor guy... could I squeeze this in as a fourth? Tempting.

Google Fiber is shooting for 20-gig speeds with Wi-Fi 7.

Google says it wants to offer the service to “select areas” by the end of this
year. The 20GBps speeds and the not-yet-certified Wi-Fi 7 would be a pretty big
upgrade for the service, which currently offers up to 8GBps and Wi-Fi 6 routers.

The first V4 Tesla Superchargers in the US are now operational.

Keen Tesla Owners Club users found this new Sparks, Nevada charging station near
Tesla’s first Gigafactory under construction earlier this month, along with
another in Wilsonville, Oregon.

The new V4 stations feature payment terminals, CCS adapters, and longer cords
that can make charging non-Tesla EVs a bit easier in the US.

Elgato’s HDMI 2.1 capture cards are on the way.

Elgato has teased two new HDMI 2.1 capture cards at Twitchcon recently. Senpai
Gaming spotted a USB 4K X capture card capable of 4K/144Hz passthrough, and a
PCIe 4K Pro that can handle up to 8K/60Hz passthrough. These will compete with
AVerMedia’s recent HDMI 2.1 USB capture card. Elgato hasn’t confirmed pricing or
a release date yet, though.
