ASIA POWER INDEX
2023 EDITION

The annual Asia Power Index measures resources and influence to assess the
relative power of states in Asia. It is an analytical tool that ranks 26
countries and territories in terms of what they have, and what they do with what
they have – reaching as far west as Pakistan, as far north as Russia, and as far
into the Pacific as Australia, New Zealand and the United States. The 2023
edition — which covers five years of data — is the most comprehensive assessment
of the changing distribution of power in Asia so far. Download the Key Findings
report for in-depth analysis of the 2023 results.

KEY FINDINGS

As other countries reopened in 2022, China’s self-imposed isolation and
zero-Covid policies exacted a heavy toll on its standing. Driven by China’s loss
in connectivity, the United States regained first place in the Economic
Capability measure. Yet the country emerges more militarily capable than ever.
