Jessie Willcox Smith was an American illustrator renowned for her heartwarming
illustrations in children’s literature. Whether you’re a fan of vintage art or
simply appreciate the timeless appeal of mother and child imagery, these free
printable art prints will delight and inspire you.

CELEBRATING MOTHERHOOD IN ART

Jessie Willcox Smith’s illustrations, which appeared in magazines and books in
the late 19th and early 20th centuries, captured the innocence and beauty of
childhood as well as the tenderness and devotion of motherhood.

Her artwork is perfect for adding a touch of nostalgia and warmth to your home
decor.

ICONIC ILLUSTRATIONS OF MOTHERHOOD

Smith’s portraits of mothers and children are perfect for Mother’s Day because
they capture the essence of the mother-child relationship in a way that is both
timeless and universal.

Her illustrations depict the tenderness, love, and care that mothers provide to
their children, as well as the joy and innocence that children bring to their
mothers’ lives.

SCENES OF EVERYDAY LIFE

Smith’s illustrations often show everyday scenes, such as a mother reading a
storybook to her child or a mother and child walking together in a garden.

These simple yet profound moments are what make the bond between mother and
child so special, and Smith’s illustrations capture them with an unparalleled
sense of warmth and nostalgia.

DECORATE YOUR HOME WITH TIMELESS ART

You can use Smith’s artwork to decorate your home in various ways. Print and
frame these illustrations to create a cozy and nostalgic atmosphere, or
incorporate them into Mother’s Day celebrations to honor the special bond

A SHORT BIOGRAPHY OF JESSIE WILLCOX SMITH

Unknown – estimate 1880-1910, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons

Jessie Willcox Smith (1863-1935) was a remarkable figure of American Romanticism
and Impressionism. She gained widespread recognition for her work, especially in
children’s books, and is often compared to Mary Cassatt for her endearing
portrayal of children.

THE GOLDEN AGE OF AMERICAN ILLUSTRATION

Smith was a member of the Red Rose Girls along with Violet Oakley and Elizabeth
Shippen Green. Together, they became the cornerstone of the Golden Age of
American illustration.

Smith studied at the Drexel Institute under Howard Pyle and became one of the
most prominent female illustrators of her time.

PROLIFIC CAREER AND LEGACY

Smith’s work appeared on magazine covers and in many popular children’s books,
including “Little Women” and “The Child’s Garden of Verses.” Her illustrations
graced every cover of Good Housekeeping from December 1917 through April 1933,
earning her the title of the artist with the longest continuous run of
illustrated magazine covers.

MOTHER GOOSE NURSERY RHYMES

Her illustrated collection of Mother Goose nursery rhymes is a timeless classic
and a must-have for any children’s book collection.

Smith’s illustrations are a popular choice for decorating children’s rooms or
nurseries, and her work has been reproduced in various formats, including paper
prints, canvas prints, and digital downloads.

HONORING A LEGACY

Smith’s work is featured in the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and she
was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Society of Illustrators.

Her robust career included the illustration of nearly 40 books, and her timeless
depictions of motherhood continue to bring warmth and love to any space.

races through the dark woods on his horse, Gunpowder, a heart-pounding chase

their own ghost stories, forever becoming a part of the haunting lore of Sleepy
Hollow.

Episode Seven from The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving is public domain.

Content Disclosure: “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” was written in the early
1800s, and as such, it contains language and references that reflect the
societal norms and views of that time. Some of the terms and subject matter,
particularly the use of the word ‘negros,’ are no longer considered appropriate
or acceptable today. While I’ve chosen to omit a particularly offensive passage,
it’s important to acknowledge these outdated views as part of the historical
context. Please be mindful of this when sharing the story, especially with
children.”
