Xiaokun Starting Point: Ban Ki-moon’s new report style After graduating from Hong Kong with excellent grades, Xiaokun didn’t choose the popular financial industry, but rather the work in the United Nations. It was in that year that the then Secretary General of the UN was going to visit China. Xiaokun’s team was asked to prepare the national analysis for Ban Ki-moon’s visit. As a freshman, Xiaokun studied past reports and started to imitate the style. However, when he finished the first draft, he didn’t feel proud of his work. He asked himself, “If this is the most important report I will ever write, am I really willing to just finish the job and get a passing grade? The report is about the young generation of China. They are here to learn and seek wisdom and are full of passion to make the world a better place. Why can't I think outside the box and reflect our generation in a more dynamic way? Xiaokun began to make radical changes. Without changing the key points, he introduced internet culture among the young generation in the report. His team loved it. Xiaokun still looks back with pride because he completed perhaps the most important article in his life thus far, exceptionally well. Ban Ki-moon's report also had a new style due to Xiaokun's bold attempt. Turning Point: Understanding the customers of Tencent’s wealth management service, Licaitong Xiaokun joined Tencent as a product trainee after leaving the UN. Xiaokun, who thought his life would shine in the financial industry, started working in Tencent’s wealth management team. In the slightly unfamiliar Internet industry, Xiaokun quickly adapted and found his own position, using his financial background to help more users choose suitable financial products that help them grow their wealth. Traditional financial products are always accompanied by difficult and obscure professional terms, which make ordinary people feel lost when choosing which products to invest in. This causes anxiety and avoidance of products they do not feel they understand. Xiaokun and the team, based on the user-oriented principle, exchanged positions with their users and considered how they are feeling when buying financial products on mobile phones. Driven by a strong sense of empathy and responsibility, Xiaokun began to adjust Licaitong's product introduction. He gradually changed the introduction that was full of professional and complicated terms into one that is easy to understand. The information that users care about was emphasized and easy to find. Every word has now been carefully scrutinized in order to not be ambiguous and to help users make quick, informed decisions. In terms of the product selection of Licaitong, Xiaokun also made a preliminary product screening for Licaitong's using his professional experience. As a newcomer, however, Xiaokun's excellent decision-making and execution guaranteed continued wonderful work. “Excellent employee” is the best reward for Xiaokun from Licaitong. Xiaokun was proud when he recalled his experience at Licaitong. He helped Licaitong launch new products, new introductions and also helped Licaitong users to build their wealth. Crossborder: WeTV- Make Tencent Video international As a product trainee, Xiaokun needed to experience different project groups. His new journey began with Tencent Video. Different from the relatively mature financial business he worked at in the past, this was Xiaokun's new journey as well as Tencent Video's new journey. Xiaokun was tasked with Tencent Video's overseas expansion. Faced with the unknown challenges of the overseas Internet environment, government policies and user habits, Xiaokun did not flinch. With the experience of working in international organizations, Xiaokun got the hang of the international Internet business. After preliminary overseas user analysis and market analysis, Xiaokun broke the task apart and decided with the team to give priority to the overseas version of Tencent Video in some regions and to gradually improve its extensive functions. The decision has helped the team develop their overseas business rapidly. Tencent Video's new journey was well underway with Xiaokun. The new journey has already set sail. Having been able to successfully write speeches and revise product introductions, Xiaokun has enough confidence and courage to sow more and reap more in his new journey. Knowing in advance he can overcome any challenge he may face, Xiaokun overcame. However, every newcomer to Tencent who dares to meet such challenges opens up endless possibilities for themselves. Even starting from a small office, everyone at Tencent has begun to change this imperfect world in his or her own way. A start-up journey of Vida Vida Vida left Tencent to start his own company and later returned to Tencent. However, he was thankful for the experience, because every step in life may have unexpected meanings. Vida was recruited to Tencent’s trainee challenge program after graduating, where he met a group of similar minds. In 2 weeks, 14 people were asked to jointly finish a project. They had classes and training in daytime and, at night, they continued the in-depth discussions and exchanged their own opinions, the scene of which resembled ancient literati wandered at night holding candles. It is at that time that they buried the entrepreneurial seeds. In 2015, they put the ideas into actions and it was never a rush of mind. They were equipped with ideas, energy, confidence and hope for the Internet industry, two years’ work experience and technical knowledge. The seeds now started to bud and their adventure began. They believed that it was worthwhile to see the world beyond Tencent and start their business when they’re still young. However, with two years’ preparation, the start-up journey was never easy. Vida was originally responsible for backend development, but now he had to learn to track new updates in industries. Except development, he needed to think for the future, seek breakthroughs and increase the chance of success. Survival was the team’s priority. But Vida was troubled by the anxiety over all kinds of uncertainties. The team was hardwired by Internet mindset and didn’t know enough about traditional industries. They discussed many times about the project’s future, but they weren’t as energetic as they were in Tencent. It is from that moment that Vida had new respects for traditional industries, started to think in investors’ shoes and cared about what the users cared about and even the prospects of the industry. Vida began to contact with traditional industries. In the prime time of Internet plus, Vida fought at the frontline of Internet’s combination with traditional industries. He thought about how to combine Internet’s advantages with traditional industries, how to analyze the real-life problems of traditional industries, how to distinguish users’ demands and choose the optimal solution and how to build his own technical threshold. The experience was his treasure during the start-up journey. An unheralded start-up still bore treasure. Vida decided to return to Tencent and start over as a new employee with new experience. The start-up journey made him miss the humanistic care of Tencent and his old team members. He resolutely chose to return to his old department. After a year, he felt the changes at Tencent and how time flew. The department’s staff used to be just developers, but now there were operation and maintenance, testing, development and solution planning, clarifying each person’s tasks. Vida was no longer responsible for just development and his new job was general strategic planning where he could tap into his start-up experience. With broader visions, he was able to provide deeper analysis and better solutions with a bigger picture at heart. Returning to Tencent, Vida was equipped with new talent and toolkit. All the struggles were never in vain. Those endless nights wringing his mind to survive now became his treasure to contribute to the new team.
