THE CHICEST AUTUMN WREATHS TO HANG ON YOUR DOOR THIS SEASON

YOU MAGAZINE
October 2, 2023

Hanging a wreath on our door was once an activity reserved solely for Christmas
– having a lovely inviting display on the front door acted as a festive welcome,
and proved you were getting into the spirit of the season. But these days,
wreaths aren’t just for December time; in fact, over the years, autumn wreaths
have grown in popularity, and can now be spotted hanging on all of Instagram’s
chicest doors.

Autumn wreaths are distinctly different from their most established Christmas
counterparts, with rich orange and green colour schemes, berries and sticks, and
various textures all common features. They have less of a ‘sparkle’ feel and
more of an understated, classy, warm vibe that stands for everything October
really represents.

There are also some great Halloween options out there too, if you’re a huge fan
of spooky celebrations come October 31st.

Celebrities like Stacey Solomon and Mrs Hinch have been fans of the autumn
wreath decoration in previous years – Stacey now has her own one on sale from
George at Asda and Mrs Hinch has been known to make her own. Like Mrs Hinch, you
can always try and give your own homemade wreath a go — there are plenty of
online tutorials that will show you the way.

However, if artsy creations aren’t usually your thing, you can always buy a
ready-made wreath from the likes of Etsy, John Lewis, and Amazon. Here are a
selection of our current favourites.

Smoky black bean bake

Smoky and rich molten black beans, loaded with cheese, served with a herby
soured cream and quick pickled onions to cut through the richness. Ancho
chillies are well worth seeking out; they are mild in heat but pack a punch when
it comes to flavour. This dish is utterly satisfying as it is, but if you’re
feeling a wee bit greedier, serve with baked sweet potatoes.

Mascarpone braised beans

Sweet tomato, salty pancetta and sweet peas are a dream combination. This is a
one-pan weeknight dinner that’s moreish and comforting. Big butter beans are
perfect for this dish, as the texture is needed to keep up with the sauce.

Persian-style herby chickpeas

Chickpeas provide a base of savoury, nutty deliciousness, topped with
contrasting crispy, caramelised onions, cooling yogurt and a fragrant sizzling
mint oil, creating a dish that is bursting with flavour and texture. If you
don’t want to make the mint oil, sprinkle over freshly chopped mint before
serving.

Mob’s honey harissa carrots with whipped feta

This recipe for delicious, spicy-sweet carrots on a bed of creamy whipped feta
is by Sophie Wyburd. We’d serve this with some warm flatbreads. If you don’t
have carrot tops, use fresh parsley.

Creamy sausage, leek & bean stew

This wonderful beany stew by Sophie Wyburd is the ultimate comfort food. Packed
with soft leeks and juicy sausages, it would also work with kale or cavolo nero.

Sticky balsamic kale & red bean winter salad

This warm winter salad is a textural sensation. The balsamic reduces around the
puffy red (kidney) beans and contrasts beautifully with the mildly bitter kale.
Cheesy things make a killer combo with this dish, so either include the shaved
parmesan or make it more of a feast by serving it alongside a rich cauliflower
cheese or an old-school mac and cheese.

Winter squash, sage & goat’s cheese bean-otto

The creaminess of the white beans creates a base that’s similar to a traditional
risotto. It all comes down to texture - before adding your beans, taste one and
note how hard or soft it is. Adjust the cooking time accordingly.

The canny cook: Cheat’s lasagne

This speedy recipe is full of shortcuts and requires no layering. Any cheese you

Drinks: Charlotte’s low- and zero-ABV beers

This drinks category is thriving, with an abundance of appetising non-boozy
tipples that don’t compromise on flavour. Be it a stout, an IPA or a lager,
you’ll find my picks below widely available at supermarkets, pubs, bars and
restaurants. So cheers - to a clear head!

Lee Child: a real-life plot twist

British authors Lee and Andrew Child are convinced that a talent for
thriller-writing is genetic. Lee is, of course, the author of the Jack Reacher
series which has now sold more than 100 million copies – earning an astonishing
$1 billion in the process. But four years ago, aged 64, he retired and his
younger brother Andrew (now 55) took charge. However, it’s not this sibling’s
talent they’re talking about today; it’s that of Andrew’s daughter, Jess.
