Skip to content HAKUNA MATATA SI & LIV'S PHOTOBLOG Toggle Sidebar January 17, 2016March 27, 2016 WILDLIFE OF MADAGASCAR Madagascar is home to an abundance of plants and animals found nowhere else on Earth. Approximately 90 percent of all plant and animal species found in Madagascar are endemic. Below show some photos of wildlife that we saw in just a few days trekking! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CHAMELEONS Madagascar is home to two-thirds of the world’s chameleon species, and we were amazed to see the variations in size and colour of these unique reptiles! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LEMURS There are about 100 species and subspecies of lemur and almost all are classified as rare, vulnerable, or endangered. At least 17 species of lemur have become extinct since man arrived on Madagascar, all of which were larger than the surviving lemur species. Lemurs only exist on Madagascar due to the absence of monkeys and other competitors, and Madagascar having lost over 90% of its original forest, it’s pretty important to protect them! SIKAFAS LEMUR -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RUFFED LEMUR -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RED-COLLARED BROWN LEMUR -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GREY BAMBOO LEMUR -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RINGTAILED LEMUR -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- INDRI LEMUR -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FROGS With at least 266 species of amphibians, we saw plenty, here are a few photos showing the rich variety of frogs we saw, all of these frogs were no larger than a couple of centimetres in length. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LEAF-TAILED GEKKO Probably one of the most incredible things I’ve seen – this takes camouflage to a whole new level! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GIANT LEAF-TAILED GEKKO -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GIRAFFE WEEVIL I remember seeing a BBC documentary about these guys, where the males have an extended neck and fight for the right to mate with the females, was amazing to see another unique creature! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MALAGASY GREEN LYNX SPIDER This has to be the most colourful spider I’ve ever seen! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MADAGASCAR GROUND BOA We stumbled across this guy basking in the sun, he was pretty huge!
