Canine Good Citizen is a 10-skill test that teaches good manners to dogs and responsible dog ownership to their owners. It is a stepping-stone to other exams, such as those given for therapy dogs, and is a good starting point for more advanced dog training. A CGC Test Cert is required by DBKL for several breeds - see below. WHAT IS A CANINE GOOD CITIZEN TEST? In 1989, The American Kennel Club created their Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) Certificate. This is a simplified version of the German BH-VT which tests basic obedience and confidence around strange people, strange dogs, traffic, bicyclists, joggers, loud noises, and briefly tethered alone (such as when its owner goes out of sight into a shop). A dog that exhibits excessive fear, distracted behaviors, or aggression is not allowed entry into almost all dog sports in Europe that require off-leash work, such as Schutzhund/IPO/IGP, agility and flyball. It is not required for conformation shows where dogs are always on leash. Since 1989, 1 million dogs and their owners have participated in CGC since it was started in 1989 (over 30,000 dogs per year).
