About Grimsby Minster

WHAT MAKES THE MINSTER SPECIAL

Grimsby Minster is the church at the heart of our borough of North East
Lincolnshire and is a church for everyone. It is the place to which the town
turns at moments of great joy and of great sadness, and we are proud to host
civic services, the annual Service of Remembrance, as well as baptisms, weddings
and funerals.

Hidden away behind a side door are 75 steps up to the Tower of Grimsby Minster .

There are 10 bells at Grimsby all on a timber frame. The smallest being 4cwt (
known as the treble)and the largest ( tenor) at just over 18cwt. Total weight of
4.3 tons with the tenor measuring 4 feet in diameter. Some date back to 1830
with 2 additions in 1962.

There are 14 regular Bellringers at Grimsby led by Tower Captain Angela Newson.
Ringing regularly for Sunday services and weddings. They can also be seen out
and about at other churches helping out for weddings. ( If you see them they
love cake!)

Regular practices are held on Wednesday evenings from 7.30 til 9pm and all
visitors are welcome.

They are always looking for new recruits,so if you fancy coming and having a go
in a fun relaxed environment and meet new friends then get in touch at
grimsbyminsterbells@gmail.com or contact the Parish Office.

OUR HERITAGE

Come and join generations of local residents and visitors to the town whose
spirits have been refreshed by exploring the church on this site for more than
900 years.

We are indebted for the information in our guide leaflets to Stephen Birch,
Honorary Church Archivist, and his many hours of patient research and
scholarship.

Over the centuries the church building has been redesigned, damaged and
repaired, rebuilt, reordered and extended to meet the contemporary needs of the
community it serves.

Formerly known as St James’ or Grimsby Parish Church, the Minster in its present
style dates from building work begun by the Augustinian Abbot and Canons of
Wellow Abbey around 1230 AD. Wellow Abbey was ‘dissolved’ in 1536, but Street
names such as Wellowgate, Abbey Drive and St Olaf’s Grove are reminders of its
existence.

Grade One Listed, the Minster will lead you via architecture and artefact to
value the heritage preserved and reflected here. But Grimsby Minster is also a
vibrant and inspiring community resource. As you discover the story to date you
will find yourself pointed towards chapters still to unfold. Enjoy the journey!

Minster Café

WE SERVE DELICIOUS RANGES OF FOOD & DRINKS

We’re open Tuesday to Saturday, 9.30am – 3pm.  We hope you’ll pop in and enjoy
some delicious food, cakes and refreshments with us, as well as have a chance to
look around our historic and beautiful building.

THE ROLL OF HONOUR (WW2)

The Roll of Honour is a book which is opened to the day of the week and found in
an oak display chest, under the east window of the chapel.

The book cost around £400 to be written and illuminated.

Click this link to view the book online – there are 130 pages of the book; on
each page can be found the day of the month, followed by the surname and
initials , rank or unit or ship on which the named person died.
