GOOGLE PIXEL 9 PRO XL REVIEW - A GOOGLE GEN AI PHONE FOR GAMERS AND BIGGER HANDS

Muzaffar Ismail - Dec 24, 2024

Following in the footsteps of the Google Pixel 9 is the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL,
which from the naming convention seems to indicate it's for people with bigger
hands? Nonetheless, this bigger variant offers a 6.8-inch Actua OLED display
with a 120Hz refresh rate and a periscope camera. Is it worth the RM5699 asking
price? Read on and find out for yourself in our full review of the Google Pixel
9 Pro XL.

DESIGN - JUST A BIT BIGGER WITH A SHINY METAL CHASSIS

With the XL moniker, you'd think that the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL would be a huge
phone… but it's not. In fact, it fits neatly in the palm of my hand. Like the
Pixel 9, it also closely follows the iPhone template of flat sides, rounded
corners, and a flat-screen. The only design difference is the much shinier
metallic chassis, giving it a bit more of a premium feel.

Not exactly what I would call XL but it IS bigger

Overall design still follows the rounded corner, flat sides template

The massive pill-shaped camera hump now has a periscope camera

On the back, there's still the rather large pill-shaped rear camera hump. But
now it houses 3 camera sensors, including a 48MP periscope camera. Build quality
is solid with just a single Google logo on the flat matte Obsidian (black)
backside which makes it pretty fingerprint resistant. We can't say the same for
the shiny sides though, as they attract fingerprints like magnets.

On the display, there's a single punch hole for the 48MP front camera and on the
right side there's a power button and volume rocker. The display has a layer of
Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for protection and fingerprint resistance. On the
bottom, there's a USB Type C port, a speaker vent and the SIM card tray. At 221g
and 8.5mm, the phone is only slightly heavier than the Pixel 9.

On the bottom, there's the USB Type-C port, speaker vent and nano SIM card tray

The shiny metal sides are premium looking but attract fingerprints

Very shiny metal sides

Google Malaysia was also kind enough to provide the official casing (but you
will probably have to purchase it separately). Unfortunately, it is still
surprisingly slippery, so if you must use it, we recommend a tight grip. The
phone only comes with a USB Type-C cable and documentation in the main box, so
you'll have to buy a casing and charger on your own.

TECH SPECS AND FEATURES - A MIX OF MIDRANGE AND UPPER MIDRANGE

Here are the tech specs or specifications for the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL:

 * Google Tensor G4
 * 16GB RAM
 * 128GB / 256GB / 512GB / 1TB storage

   brightness)

 * Android 14 (upgradeable to Android 15)
 * Available in Porcelain, Rose Quartz, Hazel, Obsidian

While the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL looks to be powered by a Google Tensor G4
chipset just like the Google Pixel 9, initial benchmarks show that it's
significantly more powerful. We'll discover how much more in the performance
section, but for other improvements, the phone comes with 16GB RAM, 128GB to 1TB
in storage, a 48MP telephoto 5x periscope camera, 42MP front camera and the
aforementioned 6.8-inch Super Actua LTPO OLED display with up to 120Hz refresh
rate and 3000 nits brightness.

Just like other Pixels, the Pixel 9 Pro XL uses stock Android, so there's no
bloatware. But you will have to manually install social media apps like Facebook
and Instagram. Scrolling through the menus is buttery smooth while the 16GB of
RAM keeps the phone as stable as possible.

This is as stock Android as possible

All the Google AI features are still there including Pixel Studio and Magic
Editor in the Photos app. But there are some extras like Zoom Enhance, which
adds details to your otherwise blurry 30x zoom shots. Gemini is still there but
has only been integrated into Gmail for now, so you won't be able to use it for
actual Google productivity apps like Docs, Sheets or Slides just yet.

For those who don't know, Pixel Studio lets you generate your own images using
the Imagen 3 engine. But it is limited to images without any humans. Magic
Editor offers a number of AI-assisted photo editing features including Magic
eraser, but unlike other AI photo editors, it has Suggestions, allowing Magic
Editor to automatically make your photo "better". This does work for the most
part, but on occasion, it might delete things you want to keep.

There are also AI-assisted camera features such as Pan Shot, which gives a
motion effect like if you were to do a panning shot for a moving object and Long
Exposure which intelligently takes light trails and motion shots. Then there's
also the signature Add Me, which lets you take a shot and then pass the phone to
someone else to add you to the overall photo. For video recording, there's also
Video Boost, which basically enhances the quality up to 8K resolutions.

Google's AI features Circle-to-Search

There's also Zoom Enhance and Pixel Studio, where you can generate your own art
(as long as it's not human)

PERFORMANCE - STILL A GEN AI PHONE BUT NOW WITH BETTER ZOOM

Geekbench and 3DMark scores

As mentioned earlier, the Tensor M4 chipset in the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL appears
to have been overclocked somewhat as it maxed out our usual 3DMark Wild Life
benchmark and still returned pretty good results in 3DMark Wild Life Extreme.
The phone easily handles games like Call of Duty: Mobile and Genshin Impact on
high settings with no lag, and it doesn't get as hot as fast as the Google Pixel
9.

Like the Google Pixel 9, the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL has a very nice Super Actua
screen that can display vibrant colours. The only difference is that the
6.8-inch display is now large enough to fully enjoy movies and it is also a bit
brighter at up to 3000 nits brightness. This means it works just fine under
bright sunlight, but the screen is still somewhat reflective. The speakers are
just as loud on maximum volume and have no static at all.

Battery life for the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL is pretty good

The Google Pixel 9 Pro XL can handle 60fps Genshin Impact with no lag and much
less heat

Battery life is also somewhat longer with the 5060 mAh battery for almost 2 days
of power on normal usage. In addition, you can get back up to 100% in an hour or
so with the right fast charger. Gemini and Gen AI features work just as fast as
before with faster response times, compared to if you were to use Gemini from a
non-Pixel phone or a web browser.

In terms of cameras, the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL still takes superb macro shots
due to the 48MP macro camera without having to add any extra lens attachments.
Landscape shots are clear and detailed even in low light and portrait shots are
as good as ever.

You can get pretty good macro shots even on zoom

Plenty of detail and vibrant colours

On the first zoom, the 48MP periscope camera seems somewhat underpowered
compared to other flagships. Details look blurry, and you can only go up to 30x
zoom. However, the post-processing miracle we were hoping for is actually hidden
away in the Photos app.

Try opening a zoomed-up shot and a new option called Zoom Enhance opens up on
the left side. And we have to say it improves results a lot. Details become
sharper and clearer while colours remain the same and there's no extra noise
that is typical of most extra sharpening features.

Zoom shots are alright but a bit underpowered in this 30x zoom shot, but...

...the Zoom enhance feature really makes the details stand out even more

The AI-assisted photography features like Pan and Long Exposure were also easy
to execute and well thought out, with an easy indicator to show how steady the
shot has to be. However, thanks to the extra zoom camera you can use these
features on zoom and still get pretty nice results.

The Add Me feature is still a bit of a hit or miss though, sometimes working
really well and sometimes not, especially if there's something wrong with the
positioning. Sometimes the end result looks quite fake as the lighting for the
newly added person can be completely different from the other person, but this
only seems to happen in low-light conditions. Perhaps an update in the next 7
years might fix this.

With the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL you can do Long Exposure shots on zoom

Pan shots are very easy to do

You can clearly see all the details of the water droplets, but thanks to the
zoom you can also do...

...Silky Water with the Long Exposure mode

Gemini and other generative AI like Pixel Studio work just as well on the Google
Pixel 9 Pro XL. Again, response times for both generative images and text seem
to be faster than on non-Pixel phones, but Gmail remains the only Google app
with native Gemini integration for now. Circle to Search remains our most used
AI function though.

It is great that we can get Android 15 first along with whatever other latest
Android features Google has cooked up. And the guaranteed 7 years of updates
should satisfy anyone who wants a future-proofed device. But if you don't intend
to use most of those features (like Gemini and Pixel Studio), we have to say
that it feels a bit like a waste.

The 42MP front camera is very solid in capturing all the details, while Bokeh
looks natural

CONCLUSION - STILL HAS GEN AI BUT CAN NOW DO MUCH MORE

Overall, the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL smartphone is not only made for bigger hands
but also delivers a good amount of extra premium features over the vanilla
Google Pixel 9. Is it worth the up to RM5699 price tag? That depends entirely on
what you like to do with your smartphone.

If you like macro photography and just a bit of zoom mobilegraphy, then the
Google Pixel 9 Pro XL is almost ideal. However, if you're a bit more into zoom
mobilegraphy, the lower 30x zoom may not be enough for you, despite the much
better Zoom enhance feature. The extra performance also means that the Pixel 9
Pro XL is the Pixel phone to get for gaming while the AI features are icing on
the cake.

However, these days, there are quite a few other contenders that rock Gen AI and
ultra-zoom mobilegraphy features. These include the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra,
the OPPO Find X8 Pro, the upcoming Honor Magic 7 Pro and more. All of the above
generally have better zoom, but none have Android 15 or Pixel Studio just yet,
which may be a key factor for some Google Pixel fans.

What do you think? Would you get the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL? Is it time to
finally retire your Google Pixel 3 and below? Share your views in the comments
