INHERITANCE

In 2020, the Pentagon released videos of “unidentified aerial phenomena,” also
known as UFOs, taken by Navy pilots. Last month, UFO enthusiasts rejoiced as
NASA announced a new effort to study these phenomena, led by many prominent
scientists.

While we can’t tell you what is in those videos, we do have a Gizmo where
students can explore life on another planet. The Inheritance Gizmo uses aliens
to introduce students to the basic principles of genetics and inheritance on
Earth. In the Gizmo, students can examine traits that are inherited (like color
and antenna shape) as well as traits that are acquired (tattoos) or influenced
by the environment (body shape). Students can also compare inheritance patterns
for sexual and asexual reproduction.
