OFFICE OF THE CHIEF INFORMATION OFFICER

The Commerce Department’s Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) ensures
the Department’s programs fully and appropriately utilize information
technology. The OCIO also supports increased use of leading-edge technology that
enables the Department to achieve its mission to provide improved products and
services at lower costs to internal and external stakeholders, alike.

The OCIO oversees the expenditure of approximately $2.5 billion each year for
computer hardware, software, and services in addition to networking and
telecommunications information technology (IT). The OCIO also develops policies
and operating guidelines for the Department’s 12 bureaus that maximize returns
on program investments while delivering quality and timely services.

The OCIO coordinates the Commerce IT Review Board that manages technology
planning and capital assets on behalf of the Department, enabling the government
to meet future data needs of businesses and society at large. The review board
evaluates proposed IT initiatives, requests for acquisitions, and conducts
assessments of ongoing IT projects
