I noticed that many panther cars have a bolt on weight or weights on the exhaust pipes act of the cats. I figure they help stress or break our pipes and I tend to unbolt or cut them off. Do they do much or any good? I have a F150 I put a cat back system on with a short muffler, all stainless steel but even after adding a 28" long SS glasspack to quieten it a bit, drone in cab at 1,900-2,000 RPM was horrible. I had some of those bolt on weights from when I bought a dual system from a CV-HPP for our Merc, I welded up a mount and hung them both about halfway back from Y and glasspack, all this ahead of the short chambered muffler. Killed the drone, just a nice tone purr now. Seams to me they were just sand or concrete inside welded tubes. They are there to dampen any resonance in the piping, its all for NVH. They aren't really "needed" but they do make a difference and they certainly aren't hurting anything. There is no way they are heavy enough to even remotely stress the piping they are attached too. Hell, even when the bolts holding the flanges they're mounted too broke on my Town Car and later on my '98, those weights still stayed in place on the loose remnants of bolt that was still there. _________________________ -Steve 2006 Audi A6 ~132k miles, stock. 1998 Mercury Grand Marquis LS HPP ~100k miles, slowly acquiring modifications. 1997 Town Car Cartier ~145k miles, Ported Plenum, Gutted Airbox, Contour E-fan Retrofit, Dual exhaust with Magnaflows, cats deleted, MSD Ignition, KYB Gas-A-Justs, P71 front bar, air ride reinstated, Projector retrofit, Caddy 4-note horn retrofit, Wood rim steering wheel retrofit, holistic weight reduction as the parts fall off.. 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis GS 117,485mi. Originally Posted By 1 Adam 12 If you've recently replaced your CV/GMQ/TC exhaust system with something upgraded, or needed to replace components, make sure you re-install your Exhaust Dampers, or that the shop did it! Exhaust Dampers are designed by Ford to cancel out exhaust "drone" as it's called. Here's an example: My 2007 had some long tube Kooks headers put on as well as a 3" exhaust system. It scrapped the ground everywhere I went there was a bump. Couldn't live with it. I took it all off, and had the factory-like stuff put back on (all Walker components - BTW, hardly noticed a difference). However, the Dampers were not reinstalled for some reason. For 3 years I lived with these exact symptoms: Anytime the car was sitting anywhere, idling, a HUGE vibration would could up the floorpan, steering wheel and I could even feel it in my seat every few seconds. It also made the dash and door vibrate a bit. This was several times worse when the A/C was on. If you increased RPMS a bit, away it went. I thought it was just normal, then asked a mechanic friend of mine. Dampers or Engine mounts he said - BINGO! Dampers were missing upon inspection. Once the dampers were reinstalled, the problem was 99.5% gone. The remaining .5% is probably normal resonance. Dampers are installed for a reason - it's not just for a "little" bit of noise. Like me, you would be surprised just how much a 3 pound damper full of steel or lead shot on your pipe(s)/muffler(s) can change the exhaust vibration to near nill. It doesn't affect any performance at all. 6 pounds of dampers won't affect your performance even a measurable amount, if that's what your worried about. The other reason is that that vibration can shake loose exhaust components over time, causing even more problems like exhaust leaks - and you don't want those... So - make sure to reinstall those dampers, and if their missing, get them! Early police cars did, not sure when they stopped. The '94 that donated its duals to my '96 had them, but it also had tailpipe resonators because there wasn't really any difference between P71 and "regular" CV/GMQ dual exhaust on the early Aeros. The stock single exhaust on my '96 only had the dampener on one side, IIRC it was on the passenger side. My '97 and '98 have factory duals, so they have them on both sides. _________________________ -Steve 2006 Audi A6 ~132k miles, stock. 1998 Mercury Grand Marquis LS HPP ~100k miles, slowly acquiring modifications. 1997 Town Car Cartier ~145k miles, Ported Plenum, Gutted Airbox, Contour E-fan Retrofit, Dual exhaust with Magnaflows, cats deleted, MSD Ignition, KYB Gas-A-Justs, P71 front bar, air ride reinstated, Projector retrofit, Caddy 4-note horn retrofit, Wood rim steering wheel retrofit, holistic weight reduction as the parts fall off.. 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis GS 117,485mi. My '01 Merc was a single exhaust car when bought, but it had two dampeners …. there where the Y pipe bolted at flanges to rear of cats. The '01 Ford HPP car I got the duals off of, bolted in place sans resonators (they are in the basement still, might use them as mufflers on my trike?) had two exact same place at the flanges. I know my '98 C V police car I was issued had them. Not sure about the '00 CVPI, but the '06 CVPI didn't have them. _________________________ ________________________________________ ____________________ Problems huh? Then Read THE Book.
