AHMEDABAD: Cybercrime police on Tuesday arrested two Ranip residents from
Thaltej crossroads for allegedly running a fake call centre in their car. The
duo lured US citizens with easy loans and got them to buy gift cards which they
later encashed.
According to an FIR filed by an inspector of cybercrime police K B Meer, the
cops received an input that the two men were running a con call centre from
their car. Cops reached the location and nabbed Poorav Panchal, 40, and Dhaval
Khetia, 35, and seized a laptop and four cellphones from them.
Panchal and Khetia were using a software that flashed an American number when
they called up US citizens. They used to tell the US citizens that they could
get them low interest loans from Bank of America, Canadian Imperial Bank of
Commerce and Bank of Montreal.
Once their potential victims got convinced, the accused would demand security
deposit charges or processing fees in the form of gift cards. After they
received the gift cards, the accused would redeem them and go incommunicado.
Police booked Panchal and Khetia for breach of trust, cheating and forgery and
began an investigation.
