remain the best choice for our clients.

WHAT IS BITUMEN?

Bitumen is a viscous, tar-like material that is versatile and used across
various industries, primarily in construction and road building. Its adhesive
and waterproof properties make it especially suited for these applications. In
road construction, bitumen serves as the binder for asphalt, which must
withstand variable temperatures and heavy loads to ensure longevity. Asphalt
consists of mineral components like gravel and sand, bound together by bitumen,
which makes up about 5% of the total mixture, highlighting bitumen's
effectiveness.

Bitumen is derived from crude oil as a residue after distilling lighter products
such as gasoline, diesel, kerosene, and various oils. It is the heaviest of the
petroleum products and is frequently used to produce road surfaces, roofing
materials, sealants, and much more. Due to its durability and resistance to
weathering, bitumen is a favored material for construction applications.
Depending on its physical properties, bitumen can be categorized into various
types or grades. For road construction, the most common classifications and
types include:

PENETRATION GRADE BITUMEN

Bitumen is classified by its penetration value, which indicates how far a
standardized needle can penetrate a bitumen sample at room temperature. The
higher the penetration value, the softer the bitumen.

VISCOSITY GRADE BITUMEN

Bitumen is classified based on its viscosity at defined high temperatures. This
classification is often used for applications where precise control of flow
properties is required.

MODIFIED BITUMEN

Modified bitumen is altered by adding petrochemical polymers or other additives
to enhance its performance characteristics. This can improve elasticity,
adhesion, and resistance to aging, often in response to issues like rutting and
cracking due to environmental and stress conditions.

EMULSION BITUMEN

Emulsion bitumen is a mixture of bitumen and water created through
emulsification. It is commonly used for road construction applications because
it is liquid at ambient temperature. It can be processed without prior heating,
making it easy to handle and apply. As it hardens, the water evaporates, and the
asphalt regains its usual strength. These types and grades of bitumen are
classified based on various criteria, which can vary depending on the
application and region of the world. There are numerous international standards
that regulate the different types and grades of bitumen.

CUTBACK BITUMEN

Cutback bitumen is a variant where bitumen is liquefied by dilution with a
solvent such as kerosene, diesel, or gasoline. This process reduces the
viscosity of the bitumen, facilitating easier handling and application. After
the solvent evaporates, the bitumen returns to its original consistency. Cutback
bitumen is often used in various road construction and repair applications.

Quality

At nextpetrol, we make no compromises when it comes to the consistently high
quality of our bitumen. We source and supply premium bitumen that meets all our
customers' requirements for penetration grade, viscosity grade, and performance
grade. Our approach to quality is stringent, adhering to quality management
guidelines and procedures throughout the entire supply chain. To ensure quality,
meticulous sampling and testing are conducted. At loading ports, all products
are tested by independent accredited laboratories to verify compliance.
Additional testing occurs upon receipt at terminals and in labs to ensure
specifications are met.

Thanks to our technical expertise, we consistently deliver maximum added value
for our customers' projects. We work closely with our international
partners—from manufacturers to industry associations, regulatory authorities,
construction firms, and end users—to provide the best quality product solutions
and stay at the forefront of industry developments.

Logistics and Packaging

For high-volume shipments, we collaborate with specialized shipping companies to
transport bitumen efficiently and safely across great distances. Utilizing
overseas bitumen tankers, we ensure port-to-port delivery maintains the
integrity of the bitumen throughout its journey. This partnership allows us to
handle large quantities with the utmost reliability and safety.

For smaller quantities, our service is tailored to meet specific customer needs,
delivering bitumen directly to your site in either cold or hot conditions. We
manage the entire process from our facilities, where cold bitumen is packed in
poly-bags of 1 cubic meter or 200-liter barrels. These poly-bags feature an
outer recyclable polypropylene coat and an inner lining designed to liquefy
together with the filling. For hot bitumen requirements, we melt the bitumen at
our local filling stations, then transfer it to specialized bitumen tank trucks.
These trucks are equipped with insulation and heating capabilities to minimize
heat loss during transit, ensuring the bitumen arrives ready for immediate use.

Our modern fleet and trained drivers guarantee that whether you need bitumen in
bulk or manageable quantities, our delivery solutions are reliable, timely, and
adapted to even the most challenging conditions such as night operations or
high-traffic highways. The safety of both our staff and your team is our top
priority, with rigorous precautions in place during the loading and unloading
processes to mitigate the risks associated with high-temperature bitumen
handling.

BITUMEN PRODUCTION PROCESS

Only about 10% of all existing types of crude oil can be used to produce
bitumen. The quality of the bitumen is highly dependent on the composition of
the crude oil from which it is derived. Crude oil deposits can vary
significantly depending on their geographical location, geological conditions,
and origin history. Therefore, the production of bitumen requires careful
selection and processing of crude oil sources to achieve high-quality products
with the necessary properties.

The bitumen manufacturing process begins with crude oil refining. In this
process, raw bitumen is separated from other components of the crude oil. The
process starts with distillation. By distilling crude oil in two stages,
distillation bitumen is produced. Initially, gasoline, diesel, and heating oil
are vaporized at atmospheric pressure. In the subsequent vacuum distillation,
the second stage, further oils such as machine oil or gas oil are extracted. The
non-vaporized residues are the high-quality distillation bitumen.

HISTORY OF BITUMEN

The use of bitumen dates back to antiquity, where it was utilized by
civilizations such as the ancient Egyptians, Sumerians, and Babylonians. It had
a variety of applications, from sealing boats to constructing road surfaces in
the Roman Empire. Throughout the Middle Ages and the early modern period, it
continued to be used for diverse purposes.

With the onset of industrialization, bitumen experienced a significant surge.
The history of bitumen took a major leap forward with the beginning of
large-scale petroleum extraction. The availability of crude oil in large
quantities enabled the mass production of bitumen and the development of new
processing techniques. This led to a wider range of bitumen products and
applications in areas such as road construction, the building industry, and roof
sealing. Bitumen became an indispensable component of modern infrastructure
projects worldwide.

In road construction, bitumen is a component of asphalt, which is a mixture of
bitumen and mineral materials such as gravel or sand. Here, bitumen serves as
the binder and makes up about 5% of the asphalt. Tar, a product of coal
gasification, was previously more commonly used but has been replaced by bitumen
in many countries due to health concerns and environmental regulations.

The continuous advancement of technologies and standards has helped make bitumen
a versatile and reliable building material, now widely used in various
industries around the globe.
