Having CKD doubles the risk of having anemia. Anemia is associated with major complications for patients with CKD, including impaired cognition, sleep disturbance, increased cardiac risk, lower quality of life, increased medical expense, and increased mortality. Despite guidelines, hemoglobin and iron stores are measured less frequently than recommended. Treatment recommendations include iron supplementation, erythropoietin-stimulating agents, and, in some cases, red cell transfusions. However, significant undertreatment of anemia in patients with CKD has been identified. In this CME program, a panel of experts discusses the impact of anemia on patients with CKD as well as efficient methods to screen for this condition. They review current treatments and introduce exciting new treatments that are on the horizon. Learning Objectives: * Describe the burden of anemia on patients with chronic kidney disease * Apply guideline-based recommendations for the evaluation of anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease * Design individualized management plans for patients with anemia and chronic kidney disease Benefits of Attending: * Learn about the impact of anemia on your patients’ lives * Competently define the risks for anemia in your patients * Analyze the role of current and new treatments for anemia in patients with CKD Hot Topics: * What are the recommendations for anemia screening? * What is do the guidelines say about first line therapy for anemia from CKD? * Why are the new treatments more effective?
