HOW TO CHOOSE PAINT FOR THE INTERIOR OF YOUR HOME
If you’re painting the interior of your house, you’ll have many options to
choose from. You’ll be able to plan out a color story, determining which paint
colors work best for each room. Water-based, oil-based, and latex paints are
just a few of the choices.
WATER-BASED PAINTS
In the past, most architectural paints were oil-based, but today’s water-based
paints have many advantages. First of all, they are environmentally friendly,
with very low VOCs. Second of all, water-based paints can be cleaned with soap
and water. Oil-based paints, on the other hand, must be cleaned with mineral
spirits or turpentine.
The earliest paints were made with clay, berries, and different types of
flowers. Later on, commercial pigments became available for individual use.
Binders such as egg whites, animal fat, and cow milk were also used. In 1865,
D.P. Flinn obtained the first patent for water-based paint. The patented formula
blended potassium hydroxide, zinc oxide, linseed oil, and milk.
OIL-BASED PAINTS
Oil-based paints are ideal for wooden surfaces. These paints have a flat finish
and emit fewer fumes, so they last longer. Oil-based paints also look good on
living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms, where the paint needs to be smooth and
easy to clean.
Oil-based paints contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which are harmful to
the environment and the human body. These compounds contribute to smog and
ground-level ozone, so the EPA has passed laws restricting the use of VOCs in
architectural paints, aerosol sprays, and household products.
LATEX PAINT
There are many benefits to using latex paint for interior painting. For
starters, it’s a versatile paint, which means it can be used on a wide variety
of surfaces. It can be applied to concrete, wood, plaster, and even wallpaper.
Because it doesn’t dry hard, latex paint can also be easily wiped clean. It’s
also more resistant to mildew and chalking than other paints, making it a good
choice for areas with high humidity.
Another benefit of latex paint is its durability. Oil-based paints tend to crack
and peel after a few years, which makes them less durable. Oil-based paints can
also cause a lot of fumes, which are bad for humans and the environment. For
these reasons, many people are switching to latex paints, and you can find this
type of paint at many retailers.
ACRYLIC PAINT
When choosing paint for the interior of your home, you have many options. There
are acrylic paints, latex paints, and water-based paints. Each type has its own
advantages and disadvantages. It is important to decide what will suit your
home’s decor and then go from there. Acrylic paint is an excellent choice for
interior painting, because it is highly durable.
Acrylic paint dries in about two to three hours. If you work in a
well-ventilated room, you can reduce this time. You can also use a heat lamp,
hairdryer, or heat gun to speed up the drying process. However, it is important
to remember that heat sources can damage the paint. Also, it is important to use
the lowest setting on these heat sources. You should also allow at least three
hours between coats.
ARTISTIC PANELS
Artistic panels are a type of decorative panel that is created using paints and
woods. They are especially popular in decorative altarpieces. Some notable
examples include works by the Siennese artist Duccio, the Dutch brothers Hubert
and Jan van Eyck, and the German artist Matthias Grunewald.
ADDITIVES
Paint additives improve the drying time, flow, and appearance of your interior
painting project. They also reduce brush marks. You can use them for latex
paints or oil-based paints. Another additive, Oil Bond, is available to help you
paint cabinets without sanding first. It can even help you protect your property
from mold and mildew.
Other types of additives include anti-settling agents that prevent fine solid
particles from settling, thereby maintaining the proper viscosity of your
interior painting project. Moreover, there are also anti-skinning agents that
prevent the formation of insoluble “skin” on your paint containers due to
polymerization and oxidation reactions. These agents also improve the look of
your finished product and increase its durability and adhesion.
