The short answer: Both ingredients have developed a negative image and reputation about safety, toxicity, and efficacy for no clinically-substantiated reason! This has overshadowed the excellent protective, emollient, and nourishing abilities of both ingredients. The key is to use the correct forms of both ingredients, which we always make sure to do! The type of Coconut Oil we formulate with has been shown in double-blind clinical studies to be non-comedogenic (non-pore clogging). The type of Petrolatum we formulate with is Medical-Grade USP 100% White Petrolatum Jelly, meaning it is certified 100% pure, and contains no PAHs or other contaminants or toxins. It is certified non-carcinogenic by the NTP, IARC, OSHA, and GHS. We recognize that many people see petroleum-byproducts as problematic, and we hear you. We figure that as this is a natural and unavoidable byproduct of these processes, it is better to put them to use than incur the environmental ramifications of the waste and disposal of them! Now, here is the long answer ☺ Coconut Oil: In all of our products we use unrefined, virgin coconut oil, meaning it is unprocessed and has no contaminants. In double-blind clinical studies, this type of coconut oil has been found to be non-comedogenic (doesn’t clog pores). The original, most-cited clinical testing on the comedogenicity of coconut oil was done in 1968 on rabbit ears, which are not equivalent to nor indicative of human use. These studies have long been discredited! Additionally, the lauric acid content of coconut oil is also known to be anti-microbial, in fact fighting the bacteria acne comes from (P. acnes) at a strength higher than benzoyl peroxide! We include coconut oil in our products because of its incredible non-volatile fatty acid content, which is excellent for dry skin and irritated skin, and also for its high level of naturally-occuring antioxidants. Petroleum: Our petroleum is certified USP-grade White Petroleum, which means it is guaranteed 100%-pure pharmaceutical-grade with no contaminants or toxicity, unlike the unfiltered cousin of petroleum, mineral oil. It is obtained by fractional distillation of petroleum followed by multiple purification steps to ensure 100% purity. It is also certified non-carcinogenic by the NTP, IARC, OSHA, and GHS. Our petrolatum does not contain any PAHs, and is not an ingredient to be concerned about! A key consideration with petroleum is how it is used in conjunction with other ingredients/products. When petroleum jelly is used entirely by itself, with nothing applied to the skin beforehand or alongside it, it simply creates an occlusive layer over the skin. This is great for protecting the skin while it heals, and creates the feeling of supple, hydrated skin. However, beneath this occlusive layer it is not actually hydrating the skin, as the molecule size of petroleum is too large to fit inside of pores (meaning it is also absolutely non-comedogenic!). However, when formulated into a cohesive product with other ingredients that properly hydrate the skin at the same time, like Hyaluronic Acid, Squalane, Glycerin, or various oils, petroleum forms a very light occlusive layer over the hydrating effects of these ingredients. This essentially locks-in all the hydration and moisture, and forms a protective barrier for the skin! This has huge benefits for all skin concerns, especially for anyone trying to heal their skin. We recognize that many people see petroleum-byproducts as problematic, and we hear you. If you have very sensitive skin, or just want to be extra safe (we always like this approach ☺), we recommend phasing in your L'AMARUE. Simply ramp up usage by adding it in every other day, or a few days a week at first. Then, increase the frequency of use. However, beneath this occlusive layer it is not actually hydrating the skin, as the molecule size of petroleum is too large to fit inside of pores (meaning it is also absolutely non-comedogenic!). However, when formulated into a cohesive product with other ingredients that properly hydrate the skin at the same time, like Hyaluronic Acid, Squalane, Glycerin, or various oils, petroleum forms a very light occlusive layer over the hydrating effects of these ingredients. This essentially locks-in all the hydration and moisture, and forms a protective barrier for the skin! This has huge benefits for all skin concerns, especially for anyone trying to heal their skin.
