NEVER TRAVEL IN TURKEY WITHOUT FOLLOWING THESE RULES

Over the years of travelling to Turkey, I have made my share of mistakes. Here
are my tips for having a top time in this beautiful country.

BEST THINGS TO DO IN REYKJAVIK, ICELAND

The child of Turkish migrants, I’ve travelled to Turkey almost every year since
I was a teenager, now often returning with my own family.

Over the years, I’ve made my share of mistakes (if we ever meet in real life,
ask me about my dating stories), but in an effort to help you have a more
successful Turkish holiday, here are the must-knows to get you off on the right
foot:

REMEMBER THE MOTTO: TEA IS KING

Tempted by that hip-looking cafe serving flat whites? Look away and keep
walking. Turks have mastered many things but western-style coffee is not one of
them. Opt for tea every time and mainline those flat whites when you get back.
You’ll have earnt them.

STOP HAGGLING

Here’s a fact: Turkey is a ridiculously cheap place to travel on the Australian
dollar - you can enjoy full meals for less than five dollars and travel in a
taxi for 30 minutes for around the same. With a current inflation rate of 80%
Turks are doing it tough, so do them a favour and accept whatever price they’re
telling you without haggling for a better deal.

GO BEYOND THE LANDMARKS

There’s no question everyone should see the likes of the Grand Bazaar, Blue
Mosque, Hagia Sophia and Topkapı Palace at least once, but be sure to see the
‘real’ Istanbul too. This can be as easy as taking the ferry across to Kadıköy
on the Asian side and wandering the streets. Be sure to grab a bite along the
waterfront in Moda, do some shopping on Bağdat Caddesi and Viaport Asia Outlet
Shopping and head out on a day trip to some of the islands that dot the Sea of
Marmara.

EAT AT A FAMILY RESTAURANT

Every so often, you’ll see the words ‘aile lokantası’ splashed on the side of a
building. It might as well say ‘take a seat’ because these rickety old places
are where you’ll find traditional home cooked meals for next to nix. Meaty soups
for little more than a dollar, chicken dishes served with rice and a salad for a
couple of bucks more. You’ll rarely leave disappointed and the old-school
atmosphere (TV blaring the news, plastic tablecloths burned with cigarettes)
just adds a little something special to the experience.

CARRY CAT FOOD WITH YOU

Cats are everywhere in Turkey. Picture: Getty

Controversial, I know, but hear me out. Cats are everywhere in Turkey and Turks
go out of their way to look after their street animals, leaving bowls of food
and water for them outside shops and apartment blocks and letting them sleep
inside department stores in the depths of winter. Carry a small amount of kibble
with you each day - just enough to feed one scrawny-looking feline as you go
about your business. It’s just good karma.

ALWAYS CHECK TAXI SEATS

Finding a taxi with a seatbelt that actually works is potluck, but you’ll
definitely be wanting one when you see how drivers take to the wheel. Be sure to
check seat belts before you get in, or you’ll spend the entire journey clutching
at the headrest in front of you and praying for your life.

DRESS MODESTLY

Planning a wardrobe full of short, bodycon dresses and bra tops? We’re going to
stop you right there. While some areas of Istanbul and many of the resort towns
along the Mediterranean and Aegean are fine for that kind of gear, attitudes
change quickly from street to street. Veer the wrong way off Istanbul’s famous
İstiklal Caddesi, for example, and you could find yourself in a not-so-great
situation. Where possible, aim for jeans and a top or a longer dress. Keep a
scarf on you too, for any impromptu visits to mosques along the way.

LEAVE SOUVENIR SHOPPING FOR NON-TOURISTY AREAS

There’s no way you’re leaving this country without a suitcase full of painted
ceramics, evil eye decorations, Turkish bath towels, leather jackets and a
lantern or two (don’t even get us started on the topic of rugs). Sure, you could
buy these items at the Grand Bazaar or in the stores surrounding all the major
landmarks, but you can also purchase most of these at far cheaper prices in the
suburban markets and stores.

And finally, remember the golden rule: never say you’re ‘full’. It’s a term that
doesn’t exist in this country. Have fun!
