PETERBOROUGH WAS A HERO OF THE 20TH CENTURY – A HISSING, STEAMING HUB OF MIGHTY
LOCOMOTIVES SITTING AT THE CROSSROADS OF A GROWING NATION.

THE POWER OF STEAMTOWN

EACH NIGHT, BENEATH THE STARS OF THE SOUTHERN FLINDERS, A LIGHT BEGINS TO GLOW
BENEATH A MIGHTY STEAM TRAIN. THERE’S A HISS OF PISTON, A RUSH OF STEAM, THE CRY
OF A GUARDSMAN – AND AN INCREDIBLE INDUSTRIAL LEGACY SLOWLY COMES TO LIFE.

Peterborough’s Steamtown was once a vast rail operation where over 100 steam
locomotives passed through each day before heading to all corners of Australia.

Today, that legacy is preserved – and you’re invited to experience it for
yourself.

Guided tours of the newly renovated Roundhouse run anytime between

10am and 11:30am weekdays and 9am and 10:30am weekends (90 mins).

Our Visitor Information Centre is open 9am to 4pm weekdays and 9am to 1pm
weekends.

Sound & lights shows running nightly at 8:30pm.

Ring 8651 3355 for further details.

Night show
We came exclusively for the lightshow, due to being timepoor in our trip and
staying in Jamestown with a limited itniterary. The man running the show knew
his information and history, the show was interesting and captivating, and the
trains were looking well kept. I would recommend for all to learn about Steam
and history of many other relevant events featured during the show movie.

A Must See
This was our second time at Steamtown and like before, we thoroughly enjoyed
both the day and evening tours. It truly is a "must see", as they take you on an
interesting journey into aspects of not only South Australia's history but also
how this town has impacted Australia as a whole.

Why go to Peterborough and not do this.
Tour and night show were very good. Phil was an excellent tour guide. Why we
have a government that forgets these little gems is beyond me. Not one
dissapointed person from my end.

More than just locomotives
They run tours of the yard continuously. You join when you arrive. If it is
after the start you continue until you have seen the bit you missed.

The round house has some unusual exhibits including an automobile that runs on
the rails. Several small rail cars for workers. A crash repair unit and even a
hand propelled car.

It has a few steam locomotives and several diesel locomotives. You can enter
many of them.

To me, the highlight was the carriages. They have several vintage sleeper cars;
some first class and one second. They all seemed familiar from my youth. The
best was the club car, a bar for first class passengers. It had a piano and
comfy arm chairs. It even had lead light windows.

In earlier days South Australia had a problem with infant mortality in the bush.
To resolve this the government created a baby health centre carriage. It is in
the museum together with employee transport cars.

Not to be missed
A superb museum. Excellent guided tour. Wonderful original carriages you can
actually walk in and sit down. A proper round house and turn table sort of like
"Thomas the Tank Engine"
Lots of close up inspection of the engines.
In the evening there is a simply fabulous sound and light show, not to be
missed.

Wrong sign
Pulled up in the Main Street of Peterborough at the small train on display with
easy access was great. We saw the sign 600 metres to the tourist information
centre. So we set off thinking we had a nice stroll ahead of us. Not true the
Center was in fact 1.5 kms away.
When we eventually got there and I mentioned it to the lady at the desk her
reply was well at least it was cool.
I suggested the sign be changed but it didn’t seem to sink in.not happy

definite recomendation
a very interesting conducted tour during the day with viewing of a number of
steam and deisel engines and carraiges that were used for different purposes.
About 90 minutes for tour which operates through the day. We went back that
night for the show which was well done and very interesting. A real trip through
the early days of Peterborough. Of interest even if you are not a train lover.

Unique experience
Being mad about railway history, I have been looking forward to a visit here for
some time and it did not disappoint. There is so much to see and read across
indoor and outdoor spaces, guided and unguided. And the Sound and Light tour is
amazing! You will learn a lot about Australian and especially SA rail history,
and fascinating cultural insights. There is lots of access into historic rolling
stock, including the baby health car, and a lounge car complete with piano! Meg
was a great guide for the sound and light evening event, with an obvious passion
for railways. It is wonderful that these assets and stories are being preserved-
so much to appeal to visitors of all ages.

PLEASE COME
Great day tour and nightime sound and light show.
They are doing a great job preserving an irreplaceable part of our history.
Besides your entry spend $5 and by a pane of glass for the roundhouse.
Where are the Corporate sponsors and State and Federal governments when you need
them.
They had a successful training program for school students but the insurance and
work safe requirements killed it off.
Please come and visit as it is only a day run from Adelaide or use it for a
base.

Wow. Best railway museum
After seeing this place on Facebook. We booked our trip only a month after and
drove our way up from Adelaide. Looking up history of steamtown and peterborough
we looked more around the area as well. All worth the trip.
The museum itself is definitely worth a visit. Yes it has historic carriages and
trains like other places but does offer the best building also. A large round
house still with turntable from a hundred years ago. And sheds more so. A fine
array of engines from steam to diesel. Carriages from original use to their
final set up before being left alone. Our tour through the place was very
informative which allowed us entry to all carrieges inside and even on some of
the trains. As a train buff it's more then worth it. But also for anyone if you
love trains or not or love history. We booked our tickets for the day tour and
night tour which is a unique experience in itself. Sitting in a carriage on the
turn table you watch a video of the rich history of the area and a light
spectacular in the carriage house bringing alive the engines once more. A
fitting end to these once great work horses of our outback.
