 * FAITH LEADERS AIM TO DOUBLE VOTER TURNOUT IN APRIL 4 ELECTION
   
   Just 32% of registered voters cast a ballot in the the first round of voting
   in Chicago’s municipal elections Feb. 28th. For those who have fought for
   voting rights, this percentage is unacceptable - which is why faith and
   community leaders will gather Sunday in a major push to double this turnout
   in the April 4th runoff.

 * MOVE NIGHT AT LORETTO
   
   

 * POLICE CHIEF TO SPEAK WITH AUSTIN RESIDENTS TUESDAY
   
   

 * FREE EVENTS FRIDAY AT KEHREIN CENTER FOR THE ARTS
   
   West Side residents 55 and older are invited to is the Kehrein Center for the
   Arts' aging well together event from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Feb.2 The free
   event, held at 5628 W. Washington Blvd., will include wellness, food, music
   and fellowship. There will be seated and standing movement options taught
   through a lens of joy and accessibility.

 * SOME THOUGHTS AS BLACK HISTORY MONTH BEGINS
   
   As we enter the month of February, I am compelled to underscore the profound
   significance of Black History Month and to emphasize the imperative for
   continual progress in various facets of our society, including education,
   community engagement, criminal justice reform, healthcare equity and beyond.
   Black History Month is a poignant reminder of African Americans' enduring
   struggles, triumphs and contributions.

 * EXPUNGEMENT, RECORD SEALING EVENT HELPS WEST SIDERS GET JOBS AFTER LEAVING
   PRISON
   
   Austin resident Anthony Jefferson has been working over the past six years to
   expunge his criminal record. With help from the Monroe Foundation, he's
   moving toward the clean slate he wants to achieve to secure employment.

 * REDEVELOPMENT PLANS UNDERWAY FOR CENTRAL AVENUE
   
   Austin’s Central Avenue will become the “main street” in the neighborhood
   that will heighten safety, will be full of historical places, storefronts.
   Two meetings this week are expected to offer background or recommendations
   for planners and the public to begin to work with.

 * KEHREIN CENTER NAMES NEW LEADER
   
   Reesheda Graham-Washington has been named founding executive director of the
   Kehrein Center for the Arts. The Kehrein Center's board of directors
   announced this week that Graham-Washington had been selected after an
   extensive search.

 * COLUMBUS PARK TO HOST EVENT THIS WEEKEND TO HELP CHICAGO’S HOMELESS,
   LOW-INCOME RESIDENTS
   
   Taste for The Homeless will kick off its annual winterfest event at 11 a.m.
   on Jan. 21st at Columbus Park, 500 S. Central.

 * GET FREE GROCERIES, OTHER HELP FROM THESE AUSTIN GROUPS
   
   On a recent Thursday, volunteers from What About Us Charitable Enterprises
   spent the morning filling dozens of grocery bags with fresh food and staples
   that soon filled the arms of West Side residents in need. Dorin “Pastor Mac”
   McIntyre, executive director and co-founder of What About Us Charitable
   Enterprises and pastor of Mount Olivet Missionary Baptist Church, is one of
   many helping Austin residents struggling with food insecurity.

 * FREE FITNESS CLASSES THIS WEEK AT CHICAGO PARK DISTRICT FACILITIES
   
   The Chicago Park District is offering free access to 71 fitness centers
   citywide through Jan. 7.

 * WINTER CONCERT CELEBRATES THE JOY OF MUSIC EDUCATION ON THE WEST SIDE
   
   Earlier this month, four elementary and secondary schools performed together
   during a winter orchestra concert at Kehrein Center for the Arts. Nearly 100
   students in all - from Catalyst Circle Rock Charter School and George Rogers
   Clark Elementary School in Austin, and Gregory Math and Science Academy and
   Frazier International Magnet School in Lawndale - showed off music skills
   learned through Ravinia Festival’s El Sistema-inspired orchestra program,
   Sistema Ravinia.  The music education program fosters social development
   through training for 3rd-8th grade students in under-resourced Chicago and
   Lake County public schools.

 * LORETTO HOSPITAL OFFERING FREE RAPID HIV TESTING THIS MONTH
   
   Loretto Hospital is offering free Rapid HIV testing on Thursdays throughout
   the month of December. No appointments are necessary, and walk-ins are
   welcome between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. in Outpatient Services on the sixth floor
   of the hospital, 645 S. Central Ave.

 * 29TH WARD RESIDENTS INVITED TO PROPOSE HOW TO SPEND $450,000
   
   Austin residents are invited to participate in this year's participatory
   budgeting cycle. The annual process lets ward residents ages 14 and up decide
   how to spend a portion of the aldermanic menu money.

 * FORTY ACRES FRESH MARKET MARKS IMPORTANT MOMENT THIS WEEK IN BRINGING STORE
   TO AUSTIN
   
   Austin moves one step closer this week to getting a new grocery store with
   the groundbreaking of Forty Acres Fresh Market in the heart of the Soul City
   Corridor. Another effort to expand food offerings on the West Side continues
   with the Austin Community Food Co-op, which held a virtual info session last
   week on its efforts to bring a grocery store to the area.

 * HEALING IN NATURE WORKSHOP SET FOR SATURDAY
   
   The Westside Cultural Alliance continues its "See, Feel and Heal" nature
   series Saturday at Garfield Park Nature Area, 100 N. Central Park with a
   workshop on making memory boxes. The workshop sessions focus on art and
   nature as vehicles of healing through art therapy, which provides wholistic
   healing for the body, mind and spirit.

 * ILLINOIS RESIDENTS CAN APPLY FOR HELP WITH PAYING GAS, ELECTRIC BILLS
   
   Applications are now open for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program
   (LIHEAP) for qualified residential customers who are over the age of 60, have
   a disability or have children under the age of 6 to receive financial
   assistance to pay their energy bills. LIHEAP is a federally funded bill
   payment assistance program that helps low- and fixed-income families pay
   their utility during the winter heating season.

 * WEST SIDERS TURN OUT FOR CHILI COOK OFF IN AUSTIN’S SOUL CITY
   
   Over a dozen local chefs competed in the second annual "It’s Getting Chili in
   Soul City" event on Saturday. A team of five who make up the Austin African
   American Business Networking Association board – Malcolm Crawford, Shirley
   Fields, Sharmine Rickett, Ronald Smith and Marshawn Felton – created the
   chili contest last year.

 * CHICAGO MARATHON RUNNER RAISES MONEY FOR WEST SIDE GIRLS
   
   Over the last 20 years, Ashley Graham has run 56 marathons - including the
   Chicago Marathon five times. Several of those marathons she raised money for
   charity - and this year was no different.

 * STOP BY AUSTIN FARMERS MARKET THIS WEEK
   
   

 * WORLD-RENOWNED CONDUCTOR REHEARSES WITH LOCAL SYMPHONY IN AUSTIN
   
   The audience sat in silence as maestro Riccardo Muti controlled over 60
   orchestra members with his hands. When he wanted the sound louder he would
   raise his hands; to get softer he lowered them; and in one motion he could
   stop the entire orchestra all at once.

 * ARTS CENTER CELEBRATES BLACK YOUTH WITH NEW MURAL 
   
   By Francia Garcia Hernandez Chicago artist Barrett Keithley stood with open
   arms before young elementary and middle school students from Catalyst Circle
   Rock last week. Behind him, glimpses of colorful patterns and musical notes
   caught the students’ eyes, awaiting to see Keithley’s work.

 * STILL TIME TO RUN OR WALK IN SATURDAY’S 5K
   
   The eighth annual Austin P.O.W.E.R. 5K will kick off Saturday morning at 8:30
   a.m. in the heart of Austin - at the corner of Chicago and Mayfield avenues.
   It's not too late to sign up; the cost is $45 per walker/runner.
