Mina Baites has written stories for as long as she has been able to think, and
she loves transporting her readers to new, mysterious worlds. She has published
a number of successful contemporary romances under the pseudonym Anna Levin. She
also cowrites historical novels set in her beloved Germany as one half of the
pseudonymous author Gerit Bertram. Mina lives with her family in northern
Germany and loves traveling.

Alison Layland is a writer and translator who has told herself stories for
as long as she can remember. She first started writing them down for others
to share when she moved to Wales in 1997 and a Welsh language course led the
way to creative writing classes. She won the short story competition at the
National Eisteddfod in 2002.
She studied Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic at Cambridge University, and after
a brief spell as a taxi driver worked for several years as a chartered
surveyor before returning to her first love – language. She translates from
German, French and Welsh into English, and her published translations
include a number of award-winning and best-selling novels. She also writes
fiction, published by Honno Press.
Someone Else's Conflict, her debut novel, was a Debut of the Month for
January 2015 on the Lovereading website. Her second novel, eco-themed
psychological thriller Riverflow, was chosen as Welsh book of the month for
August 2019 by Waterstones.

Mina Baites alias Iris Klockmann ist eine Geschichtenerzählerin.

und konnte es kaum erwarten, endlich selbst lesen und schreiben zu können.
Mit sieben verschlang sie so viele Bücher, dass sie ihre Eltern schier zur
Verzweiflung brachte.
Doch erst viel später, sie hatte längst selbst Kinder, für die sie sich
Gutenachtgeschichten ausdachte, fand sie Raum und Zeit, um ihre unzähligen
Ideen aufzuschreiben. Sehr zur Freude ihrer Töchter, denn so gingen das
Talent und die Leidenschaft ihrer Mutter nicht verloren.
Seit gut zehn Jahren veröffentlicht die erfolgreiche Schriftstellerin
zeitgenössische und historische Romane. Zwei ihrer Kurzgeschichten
erschienen bereits in den USA bei Dover Publications, New York.
Mina Baites alias Iris Klockmann is a born storyteller.
As a little child she entertained her family with childish adventures and
could not wait to read and write on her own. At the age of seven she read so
many books that she nearly exasperated her parents.
However, it was only many years later that she had the space and the time to
write down all her uncountable ideas. At that time she already had children
of her own and made up bed time stories.
Her daughters were extremely excited because their mother’s talent and
passion will not go to waste.
The succesful writer has been publishing comtemporary and historical novels
for ten years now. Two short stories were published in the United States by
Dover Publications, New York.

When it comes to the Kindle First selections, they can be hit or miss on if they
are good books. Some books just stick out to me based on the titles and this was
the case with The Silver Music Box by Mina Baites. I find it intriguing when an
inanimate object is the title of a novel because that object often ends up
telling a multitude of stories. Of course, I glanced over the other titles for
this month to see what else was available but I was pretty set on this novel and
am so happy I chose to read it!
The Silver Music Box is the story of Johann Blumenthal, a Jewish jewelry shop
owner and his generations of family members to come. The story starts at the
beginning of World War I in Germany and Johann enlists to fight, with the hope
of returning to his wife and son in a few short months. He designs a beautiful
music box for his son, Paul so he always has something to remember him by, just
in case.
Fast forward to the 1960s in London when Lilian Morrison has just recently lost
her parents. They leave her an inheritance, which includes the beautiful silver
music box but not a lot of information other than that. Lilian is desperate to
find out about her past and searches endlessly for months for information. It
turns out, the silver music box, an inanimate object that can't technically
talk, tells a lot more stories than Lilian ever imagined and her life will be
forever changed.
When I started The Silver Music Box, I hoped it would be as good as I thought,
just based on the intriguing title and it was! It's a quick read and I often
found myself devouring chapters at a time. The story spans from World War I to
the beginning of World War II and then jumps ahead to the 1960s in London.
Though there are gaps between the time periods, there are not gaps in the story
because the author does a great job filling in the events and I didn't finish
the story with any questions about what happened with any of the characters.
This novel was also initially written in German and you wouldn't know it because
the translator did such a great job and I don't feel like there are any awkward
translations. I read the Author's Note and the information on the author and
translator at the end. It's obvious the author did a ton of research and based
some of her characters on real people.
Overall, I loved this novel and tore through it! I finished it late last night
but waited until this morning to write a review so I had some time to think
about it. I always find it amazing how an object can tell so many stories and
The Silver Music Box did just that! If you enjoy stories set in Germany during
the World Wars, you will LOVE this novel!

I was disappointed with the story, there are much better stories about the WW2.
But still, the gradual struggle developed and how a WW1 veteran's family is
treated in the WW2 because of their religion was a good read. A one time read.
Nothing more than that. The point where Lilian sets out to find her parents is
where the book starts getting a bit lousy. Till then, the book is interesting.
