HOW DOES IT WORK?

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Hooked on Phonics starts out by asking a simple question:
Does your child recognize the letters of the alphabet and know the sounds the
letters make?

You will have the ability to modify Practice Pack levels, if it’s not the
perfect fit, within your dashboard.

PRE-READER

If your child is just starting to learn the letters and their sounds, they
should start with the Pre-reader section of the App and corresponding Practice

THE STORY OF HOOKED ON PHONICS

The Hooked on Phonics story began in 1987 with a determined father and a boy
whose reading struggles left him constantly begging to stay home from school.
The father, John, was determined to help his son overcome his reading troubles,
so he started by using the old-fashioned method of sounding out words.

The son had no idea what his father was doing as he tried to teach him this
method of sounding out words. So quickly, it was time to try something
different.

John wrote catchy jingles to accompany reading drills and developed an in-home
learning program using phonics. To his delight, it worked! And the rest was
history…

More than 30 years later, Hooked on Phonics is still the Gold Standard,
household name for educational excellence. Today, more than 5,000,000 families
and thousands of schools have turned to Hooked on Phonics to help their children
and students reach their full potential.

LEARN TO READ

Each workbook begins with a review of the previous lessons and steps, to make
sure the child has mastered the learning before moving on to the next step. The
lessons start by systematically introducing a short-vowel word family, such as
-at, -an, or -ap. By combining these word families with simple consonant sounds,
a child will begin to read words such as cat, can, and cap. Comprehension is
strengthened as a child matches words to pictures and engages in fun activities
that provide additional practice with the newly learned words. Every lesson is
followed by a simple story composed of the words that have just been introduced,
to solidify the learning and turn the child into a reader! The lessons also
present common sight words through fun co-reading poems and contain sections
that encourage writing about something that has been read. After learning
short-vowel word families, learners will move on to beginning and ending blends,
digraphs, inflectional endings, and more. Every step is designed to turn a child
into a successful reader!

PRE-READER

Workbook pages are predictable – which helps a child master the learning.  A
child starts off by coloring the letter to learn its shape.  Next the child can
say the names of common words aloud to hear the letter sound at the beginning of
those words.  Parents and caregivers can look for the suggestions for
off-the-page sensory activities to extend the learning.  After a child tries the
practice activity or game, it’s time to trace or write the letter.  The alphabet
at the bottom of the page (with the feature letter highlighted) demonstrates
alphabetic order.

But that’s not all.  Workbooks include review sections to reinforce (and provide
a check on) the learning.  Since each pack also comes with two included
storybooks, there are questions in the workbook to help parents and caregivers
kick-off the reading conversation after sharing one of the books.  This helps a
child build comprehension and understanding.
