GAY MEN FASHION BIOGRAPHY

Source:- Google.com.pk

Some may swear it’s hormonal, some say it’s olfactory and subliminal, a
pheromone that’s emitted and as undetectable as breathing, others insist it’s
“gaydar”, as in secret messages being sent, intercepted and deciphered. For me
it’s something in the eyes, but I can’t really articulate it, regardless, most
gay men will tell you that they can just tell if someone else is gay...or
“really” gay. While there may be some validity in all those points of view,
assuredly the way gay men dress provides the most visible clues.
Gay men dress to attract other gay men. Duh! Gay men dress aware of their
sexuality, what their assets and deficits are. Gay men dress to announce what
tribe of the species to which they belong, or aspire to, in an effort to attract
others of that subset. Exp: the denim and flannel crown, with a touch of middle
class construction worker masculinity, hence the Redwing steel toed boots, not a
traditional staple in your typical office environment. On the other end of the
spectrum there is the "fop", be-suited, colorful, and accessorized, with
fastidious attention to trend; they are one tiara short of a queen. Rest assured
there are dozens of subsets in-between that define the gay male.
It is rare (but not unheard of) for one subset to be attracted to another
subset. Indeed, some sweater queens are attracted to leathermen, but then who
isn’t? Still, it’s the exception to the rule. For the most part, like
wildebeests we stick with our own.
Gay men do not just wear clothing, they wear outfits. The dress for the
occasion, but an occasion can be that’s its Wednesday, it looks like rain, or HR
is hiring a new marketing intern. An occasion need not be a wedding, anniversary
or birthday party at the in-laws. Gay men despite their cynicism, sarcasm and
jaded point of view are hopeless romantics and hold out that someone cute will
be walking his English bulldog, ordering a venti caramel apple spice at
Starbucks, and therefore providence dictates that one be best prepared, i.e.,
dressed. The knowledge that they be scrutinized by a potential liaison accounts
why gay men will mount a bar stool or lunch counter stool like they are riding
English, erect, with derrieres as pert as a palomino.
Gay men are well aware that clothing is costume, and costume is character. We
identify our character by selecting from the lexicon of clothing. This sends a
constructed message to the tribe, reporting what our expectations are, and what
we are willing to do to have them met.
In days of yore, gay men wore red ties as a signal, then came the white floppy
handkerchief in the breast pocket of a suit, in the Post-Stonewall era, gay men
pierced their left ear, taking the gold ring out when they went to the office,
but putting it in at night when they strolled their cruising areas. Aficionados
of certain sexual practices came up with a series of colorful bandannas that
indicated whether you were a top or bottom, or into things like water sports and
bondage. There was the Chelsea clone which is still favored albeit with some
concession to fashion. Then came a time thanks to the fashion pages, and the
emergence of menswear, that key looks could identify potential gay men, like the
1960’s peacock, the 1970’s Calvin Klein man who wore jeans and bleached white
oxford shirts, even the 1980’s had the American Gigolo/Armani look, which
included aviator framed sunglasses, which were worn all year long, sunlight not
withstanding, and by men who piloted nothing more than their green Ford Mercury.
Most gay men are comfortable with their metro-sexuality. They dote on looking
their best at all times. In fact, great time and effort is expended knowing how
to drape a shirt artfully into one side of ones pants, and have it hanging out
of the other side, catching the belt buckle just so, so that it doesn’t looked
forced, which by the way, it most assuredly is. Gay men are aware of how their
jeans hang, how much a boot cut should flair, and how long a boot or shoes tip
should be proportionate to the hem of their pants. Gay men understand the
principles of layering, and just how to tie a scarf, so that it’s functional,
but still looks good. Gay men understand how to tone it down in order to almost
pass for straight, or turn up the volume to compete with younger men at a
circuit party.
Gay men are obsessive observers. They tend to be great fashion forecasters. They
know what’s what, before it’s even identified by the mainstream.
It’s always fascinating to me how young gay men create new subsets, clearly
aware that they are not really attracted to the traditional subsets. There is a
new look, and for lack of a better way to identify it, I will call it the “Adam
Lambert with a twist“. It’s straight jet black hair, in wispy bangs, heavily
massacred/guyliner eyes, Chanel black polish on their nails, or at least on
their pinky’s, lots of leggings and clunky boots, mixed with faux fur vests,
pleater jackets, 80‘s retro stripes, and accessorized with S & M cuffs. It reads
as a modified Goth. The curious twist comes with a self-defining element, a dark
blazer, a tartan vest, or a Louis Vuitton duffel bag.
At present, if I’m honest, my focus of attention is on the power suit, maybe
Phineas Cole from Paul Stuart, in navy blue, or amethyst, with a discrete pin
stripe, immaculately tailored, with a narrow collar, an equestrian cut, and worn
with vivid hot colored ties and pocket squares. Naturally, shirts with spread
collars, and in slim cuts, are preferred, if you want to put me over the edge, a
French cuff with scarab cuff links will intoxicate me like heroin. Leather (not
suede) Gucci-like loafers are ideal, but Fratelli Rosetti is sufficient. A tank
watch in gold or plated chrome with an oversize face is part of the
prescription, and if they wear "Grey Flannel" it will put me over the edge.
Clearly I’m looking to upgrade, as I’m dressed in a scaled down version, that
includes second hand blazers from Gieves & Hawkes, John Weitz or Kuppenheimers,
worn with practical dress pants, (not pleated) light knit cardigans, and vests
to suggest a layer of further undress, vintage ties, worn with colorful socks,
accessorized with a leather cuff, two silver bracelets which I seldom leave the
house without. My look might suggest an eclectic point of view, closer to
interior decoration than to refined astute fashion.

This is a list of magazines primarily marketed to men. The list has been split
into subcategories according to the target audience of the magazines. This list
includes both 'adult' pornographic magazines as well as more mainstream ones.
Not included here are automobile and gadget magazines, many of which are
primarily aimed towards men.
In 2009, the feature-length documentary The September Issue was released; it was
an inside view of the production of the record-breaking September 2007 issue of
U.S. Vogue, directed by R. J. Cutler. The film was shot over eight months as
Wintour prepared the issue, and included testy exchanges between Wintour and her
creative director Grace Coddington. The issue became the largest ever published
at the time; over 5 pounds in weight and 840 pages in length, a world record for
a monthly magazine Since then, that record has been broken by Vogue's 2012
September issue, which came in at 916 pages.
Also in 2012, HBO released a documentary entitled In Vogue: The Editor's Eye, in
conjunction with the 120th anniversary of the magazine. Drawing on Vogue ' s
extensive archives, the film featured behind-the-scenes interviews with long
time Vogue editors, including Wintour, Coddington, Tonne Goodman, Hamish Bowles
and Phyllis Posnick. Celebrated subjects and designers in the fashion industry,
such as Nicole Kidman, Sarah Jessica Parker, Vera Wang, and Marc Jacobs, also
appear in the film. The editors share personal stories about collaborating with
top photographers, such as Leibowitz, and the various day-to-day
responsibilities and interactions of a fashion editor at Vogue. The film was
directed and produced by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato. In October 2012, Vogue
also released a book titled Vogue: The Editor's Eye to complement the
documentary.
In 2013, Vogue launched the Vogue video channel that can be accessed via their
website. The channel was launched in conjunction with Conde Nast's
multi-platform media initiative. Mini-series that have aired on the video
channel include Vogue Weddings, The Monday Makeover, From the Vogue Closet,
Fashion Week, Elettra's Goodness, Jeanius, Vintage Bowles, The Backstory, Beauty
Mark, Met Gala, Voguepedia, Vogue Voices, Vogue Diaries, CFDA/Vogue Fashion
Fund, and Monday's with Andre.
Books published by Vogue include In Vogue: An Illustrated History of the World's
Most Famous Fashion Magazine, Vogue: The Covers, Vogue: The Editor's Eye, Vogue
Living: House, Gardens, People, The World in Vogue, Vogue Weddings: Brides,
Dresses, Designers, and Nostalgia in Vogue.
Voguepedia
Launched in 2011 by Condé Nast Digital, Voguepedia is a fashion encyclopedia
that also includes an archive of every issue of Vogue ' s American edition since
1892. Only Vogue staff are permitted to contribute to the encyclopedia, unlike
the VogueEncyclo—hosted by Vogue Italia—that receives contributions from anyone
As of 9 May 2013, the site is not fully functional, as code still shows in
search results and only certain search terms yield results.
In 2005, Condé Nast launched Men's Vogue and announced plans for an American
version of Vogue Living that launched in 2006 (an Australian edition already
existed at the time). Men's Vogue ceased publication as an independent
publication in October 2008 and is now a twice-yearly extract in the main
edition.
Condé Nast also publishes Teen Vogue, a version of the magazine for teenage
girls in the United States. South Korea and Australia publish a Vogue Girl
magazine (currently suspended from further publication), in addition to the
Vogue Living and Vogue Entertaining + Travel editions.
Vogue Hommes International is an international men's fashion magazine based in
Paris, France, and L'uomo Vogue is the Italian men's version.Other Italian
versions of Vogue include Vogue Casa and Bambini Vogue.
Until 1961, Vogue was also the publisher of Vogue Patterns, a home sewing
pattern company. It was sold to Butterick Publishing which also licensed the
Vogue name. Vogue China was launched in September 2005, with Australian
supermodel Gemma Ward on the cover flanked by Chinese models. In 2007 an Arabic
edition of Vogue was rejected by Condé Nast International. October 2007 saw the
launch of Vogue India, and Vogue Turkey was launched in March 2010.
On 5 March 2010, 16 International editors-in-chief of Vogue met in Paris to
discuss the 2nd Fashion's Night Out. Present in the meeting were the 16
International editors-in-chief of Vogue: Wintour (American Vogue), Emmanuelle
Alt (French Vogue), Franca Sozzani (Italian Vogue), Alexandra Shulman (British
Vogue), Kirstie Clements (Australian Vogue), Aliona Doletskaya (Russian Vogue),

(Brazilian Vogue).
Since 2010, seven new editors-in-chief joined Vogue: Victoria Davydova replaced
Aliona Doletskaya as editor-in-chief of Russian Vogue;Emmanuelle Alt became
French Vogue 's editor-in-chief after Carine Roitfeld resigned;[53] Edwina
McCann became Australian Vogue's editor-in-chief after Kirstie Clements was
fired; Kelly Talamas replaced Eva Hughes at Vogue Mexico and Vogue Latin
America, when Hughes was named CEO of Condé Nast Mexico and Latin America in
2012;and Karin Swerink, Kullawit Laosukrsi, and Masha Tsukanova were appointed
editors-in-chief of the newly launched Netherlands, Thailand, and Ukraine
editions, respectively.

MENS FASHION SNEAKERS BIOGRAPHY

Source:- Google.com.pk
Shoemaking became more commercialized in the mid-18th century, as it expanded as
a cottage industry. Large warehouses began to stock footwear in warehouses, made
by many small manufacturers from the area.
Until the 19th century, shoemaking was a traditional handicraft, but by the
century's end, the process had been almost completely mechanized, with
production occurring in large factories. Despite the obvious economic gains of
mass-production, the factory system produced shoes without the individual
differentiation that the traditional shoemaker was able to provide.
The first steps towards mechanisation were taken during the Napoleonic Wars by
the engineer, Marc Brunel. He developed machinery for the mass-production of
boots for the soldiers of the British Army. In 1812 he devised a scheme for
making nailed-boot-making machinery that automatically fastened soles to uppers
by means of metallic pins or nails. With the support of the Duke of York, the
shoes were manufactured, and, due to their strength, cheapness, and durability,
were introduced for the use of the army. In the same year, the use of screws and
staples was patented by Richard Woodman. Brunel's system was described by Sir
Richard Phillips as a visitor to his factory in Battersea as follows:
"In another building I was shown his manufactory of shoes, which, like the
other, is full of ingenuity, and, in regard to subdivision of labour, brings
this fabric on a level with the oft-admired manufactory of pins. Every step in
it is effected by the most elegant and precise machinery; while, as each
operation is performed by one hand, so each shoe passes through twenty-five
hands, who complete from the hide, as supplied by the currier, a hundred pairs
of strong and well-finished shoes per day. All the details are performed by the
ingenious application of the mechanic powers; and all the parts are
characterised by precision, uniformity, and accuracy. As each man performs but
one step in the process, which implies no knowledge of what is done by those who
go before or follow him, so the persons employed are not shoemakers, but wounded
soldiers, who are able to learn their respective duties in a few hours. The
contract at which these shoes are delivered to Government is 6s. 6d. per pair,
being at least 2s. less than what was paid previously for an unequal and cobbled
article."
However, when the war ended in 1815, manual labour became much cheaper, and the
demand for military equipment subsided. As a consequence, Brunel's system was no
longer profitable and it soon ceased business.
Similar exigencies at the time of the Crimean War stimulated a renewed interest
in methods of mechanization and mass-production, which proved longer lasting. A
shoemaker in Leicester, Tomas Crick, patented the design for a riveting machine
in 1853. His machine used an iron plate to push iron rivets into the sole. The
process greatly increased the speed and efficiency of production. He also
introduced the use of steam-powered rolling-machines for hardening leather and
cutting-machines, in the mid-1850s
The sewing machine was introduced in 1846, and provided an alternative method
for the mechanization of shoemaking. By the late 1850s, the industry was
beginning to shift towards the modern factory, mainly in the US and areas of
England. A shoe stitching machine was invented by the American Lyman Blake in
1856 and perfected by 1864. Entering in to partnership with McKay, his device
became known as the McKay stitching machine and was quickly adopted by
manufacturers throughout New England.[25] As bottlenecks opened up in the
production line due to these innovations, more and more of the manufacturing
stages, such as pegging and finishing, became automated. By the 1890s, the
process of mechanisation was largely complete.
Since the mid-20th Century, advances in rubber, plastics, synthetic cloth, and
industrial adhesives have allowed manufacturers to create shoes that stray
considerably from traditional crafting techniques. Leather, which had been the
primary material in earlier styles, has remained standard in expensive dress
shoes, but athletic shoes often have little or no real leather. Soles, which
were once laboriously hand-stitched on, are now more often machine stitched or
simply glued on. Many of these newer materials, such as rubber and plastics,
have made shoes less biodegradable. It is estimated that most mass-produced
shoes require 1000 years to degrade in a landfill.[26] In the late 2000s, some
shoemakers picked up on the issue and began to produce shoes made entirely from
degradable materials, such as the Nike Considered.
In 2007, the global shoe industry had an overall market of $107.4 billion, in
terms of revenue, and is expected to grow to $122.9 billion by the end of 2012.
Shoe manufacturers in the People's Republic of China account for 63% of
production, 40.5% of global exports and 55% of industry revenue. However, many
manufacturers in Europe dominate the higher-priced, higher value-added end of
the market.
As an integral part of human culture and civilization, shoes have found their
way into our culture, folklore, and art. A popular 18th century nursery rhyme is
There was an Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe. This story tells about an old woman
living in a shoe with a lot of children. In 1948, Mahlon Haines, a shoe salesman
in Hallam, Pennsylvania, built an actual house shaped like a work boot as a form
of advertisement. The Haines Shoe House was rented to newlyweds and the elderly
until his death in 1962. Since then, it has served as an ice cream parlor, a bed
and breakfast, and a museum. It still stands today and is a popular roadside
attraction.

BLACK MEN FASHION BIOGRAPHY

Boateng, whose parents emigrated from Ghana in the 1950s, was born in 1967 in
Muswell Hill, North London.
Boateng was inspired by the immaculate suits his father wore, and received his
first suit from his mother aged eight: a double-breasted in purple mohair. At
fourteen, he found a summer job sewing linings into suits.
While studying computer science at Southgate College at age 16, he was
introduced to cutting and designing by his girlfriend. Using his mother's old
sewing machine, he started designing and selling to his fellow students, and
switched to graduate in fashion and design.
Boateng helped a friend to make clothes for a fashion show, and after receiving
praise for his work, sold his first collection to a menswear shop in Covent
Garden. Some of his first pieces were also sold in Academy, Newburgh St. C1987
This enabled him to open his first studio in Portobello Road in 1991. In 1994,
Boateng staged his first catwalk presentation during Paris Fashion Week, the
first tailor to stage a catwalk show in Paris.
Mentored by Tommy Nutter, the success of the Paris show in 1994 enabled Boateng
to open his boutique on Vigo Street, the south end of Savile Row, in 1995.
Boateng's contemporary approach to menswear design helped to forge a new
appreciation for Savile Row, and draw in a younger demographic. Boateng's moved
fully into Savile Row in June 2002,.
In 2005, Boateng was honoured with a major 20-year retrospective event at the
Victoria and Albert Museum. The exhibition recognised that Boateng had by
combining the highest standards of execution with a fresh, vibrant design
philosophy, successfully captured the imagination of both the media and the
public.
In 2008, Ozwald Boateng's new flagship store and headquarters are launched at
No. 30 Savile Row, on the corner of Savile Row and Clifford Street. The signage
and interiors were co-designed with British-Ghanaian Architect David Adjaye.
Boateng commented: "The fact that I am now in the old Anderson and Sheppard
store means a lot to me. Before I even opened my store on Vigo Street, I never
dreamed that I would have my own flagship store in place of tailors that
represent the cornerstone of British Tailoring and Savile Row.
In 2003, Boateng launched an original concept in fragrances for women. Bespoke
comprises two different vials of fragrance within an elongated, jewel-like
bottle. Developed with the whole essence of "bespoke" in mind, women have the
option of wearing each fragrance separately, or adopting the "bespoke" approach
by layering and mixing the two synergistic fragrances together in differing
proportions, to create an infinite variety of fragrances to suit their mood and
personality.
