📰 IN THE PRESS | La economista Graciela Chichilnisky —nacida en Argentina y

patrocinador.

💡STUDENT SPOTLIGHT | It all started with a class @izzylizzi09 attended during
her freshman year, taught by a Chilean instructor at @Columbia’s Department of
Latin American and Iberian Cultures.

With the goal of expanding her understanding of Chilean history, politics, and
culture, Izabella Lizarazo, a Barnard student majoring in Political Science and
Spanish & Latin American cultures, relocated to #Santiago last year to study
through the Consortium for Advanced Studies Abroad (CASA) program.

🎵 By then, she was halfway through her research to write a play about the Nueva
Canción Chilena, a popular Chilean political and social music movement of the
1960s and 1970s. A blend of protest lyrics with catchy melodies, the
#NuevaCanción resonated across Latin America, igniting social and political
change.

🎭 After nearly a year of effort, she submitted her play to a contest organized
by @nomadscu, a club at #Columbia that supports undergraduates from
#ColumbiaCollege and #BarnardCollege in creating new theater and presenting
their works on stage.

production process, her feelings as she sees her vision come to life on stage,
and the messages she hopes to convey to the audience through her play, click the

VALENTINE’S DAY | #ColumbiaLoveStory: Rosario (@rosario_contesse) & Paul
(@ppotin) 🦁🩵

Though they studied together at Universidad Católica, Rosario Contesse (SIPA’23)
and Paul Potin (CBS’23) didn’t truly cross paths until their final year.
Luckily, they both shared the dream of studying abroad.

“During the pandemic, I applied for a @fulbright_chile scholarship and won it. I
then applied to programs in several universities (8!). Paul told me to choose
first, and he would then apply according to my choice because there were MBA
programs he liked at all the universities I had applied to. He was very generous
and supportive!”

When Rosario decided on the MPA at @columbia.sipa, the #ColumbiaBusinessSchool
(@columbia_biz) had – luckily – extended the MBA application deadline due to the
pandemic, which allowed Paul to apply and get accepted.

“Living in New York was incredible! The best part was having two great groups of
friends: one from the MPA and one from the MBA. Being able to be part of each
other’s Master’s through our friends was very enriching for both of us. Paul
even took a class at SIPA, and I took one at CBS, in two different semesters, so
we had the possibility to be classmates in two courses,” Rosario tells us.

In January of 2023, Rosario and Paul traveled to Chile and got married! After
graduating last May, they embarked on a new adventure, this time in London,
where they both now work. “We are so happy; it’s a gorgeous city to live in, and
the people are very friendly. The downside is that we miss our friends dearly!”
Rosario tells us from the UK. 🇬🇧

VALENTINE’S DAY | #ColumbiaLoveStory: José María (@josemdelpino) & Pedro
(@pedrocarlozi) 🦁🩵

For José María del Pino (JN’23) and his then fiancé Pedro, @Columbia wasn’t just
an academic adventure; it was a leap of faith for their love story. When José
María was accepted to the @columbiajournalism School, Pedro didn’t hesitate to
leave everything behind and join him in NYC.

Legal marriage wasn’t a priority. “We didn’t want to rush into marriage to
fulfill legal requirements,” but Columbia embraced their commitment. José María
recalls, “The university never questioned that we were a de facto couple and not
legally married. We were accommodated in a family apartment, and all we received
was love and support.”

While José María completed the Journalism M.A. in Politics Concentration, Pedro
pursued his dreams at the American Music and Dramatic Academy (AMDA), one of the
top schools in the country for acting.

“Moving to New York was a great family decision. Several colleagues have asked
me if it has been worth it. And of course, it has!” José María assures.

After last year’s graduation, José María landed the coveted J-School’s
Investigative Journalism Fellowship in Global Migrations and started a position
as a copy editor at Telemundo 47. He also continues to work as a foreign
correspondent for Canal 13 in Chile and is excited for the news he will get to
cover throughout this crucial election year!

This #lovestory recently reached a new chapter—they tied the knot! Families from
both sides came together in New York to witness their happily ever after and
celebrate with friends. “They also got to know the Columbia campus and how our
life in New York was while we were studying. They returned to Chile incredibly
happy!” José María told us.

𝗗𝗥𝗔𝗚𝗢𝗡 🐲🏮

🔎 As we welcome the Year of the Wooden Dragon, let’s explore its significance:

In Chinese astrology, each year is associated with one of the 12 zodiac animals
and one of the five elements. In Chinese culture, the 𝗗𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗼𝗻 has
significant symbolism and is revered. It represents positive qualities such as
𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿, 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵, 𝘄𝗶𝘀𝗱𝗼𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗲, while
the 𝗪𝗼𝗼𝗱 element signifies 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵, 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱
𝗳𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆.

This unique combination of the Dragon and Wood symbolizes 𝗮 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗳
𝗱𝘆𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆, 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱
𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. It encourages us to 𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲,
𝗽𝘂𝗿𝘀𝘂𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝗿
𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 to overcome challenges. Those born under the dragon sign
are famous for their innovative thinking and inquisitive nature. Celebrities
born in the Year of the Dragon include 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻 𝗟𝗲𝗻𝗻𝗼𝗻 (𝟭𝟵𝟰𝟬),
𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻 𝗟𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗝𝗿. (𝟭𝟵𝟮𝟵), 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗢𝗯𝗮𝗺𝗮
(𝟭𝟵𝟲𝟰), 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝘇𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗲𝗹é
(𝟭𝟵𝟰𝟬).

Each Lunar New Year begins on the date of the second new Moon after the winter
solstice. In 2024, the second new Moon will occur in China on Saturday, February
10.

May the Year of the Wooden Dragon bring us 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀,

🕊️ 𝗜𝗡 𝗠𝗘𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗜𝗔𝗠 | Today, we mourn the passing of former President of
Chile, Sebastián Piñera (2010-2014; 2018-2022).

When the @columbiaglobalcenters Santiago was established in 2012, then-President
Sebastián Piñera played a key role by signing a cooperation agreement with
#ColumbiaUniversity in a ceremony held at the Chilean Presidential Palace. He
was joined by then-University President Lee Bollinger, former Provost John
Coatsworth, and the founding director of the Santiago Center, the late Karen
Poniachik, who pased away in 2022.

In September 2013, he visited the @Columbia campus to attend the World Leaders
Forum, where before hundreds of students and faculty, he shared insights on
Chile’s development journey.

#SebastiánPiñera passed away on February 6 in a helicopter accident in southern
Chile at the age of 74. Our thoughts go out to his loved ones and the people of
Chile during this time of loss.

May his legacy of leadership and dedication to his country be remembered and
honored. Rest in peace, President Piñera. 🇨🇱

🌡️ While summer heat is expected, the persistence of these extreme temperatures
has raised alarms amidst an ongoing massive #heatwave in Central and southern
Chile. This abnormality is exacerbated by the ongoing #ElNiño phenomenon, in
effect since May 2023, peaking between December and January.

🌎 El Niño intensifies extreme temperature events, triggering heatwaves across
#SouthAmerica. Meteorologist Bárbara Tapia (@barbtapiac) from the World
Meteorological Organization (@wmo_omm) warns:

📣 “We’re emerging from the warmest year ever recorded in 2023, and the current
El Niño episode is likely to intensify heat even more in 2024. This will result
in more extreme weather events, impacting lives and livelihoods.”

📣 As each year surpasses the last in warmth, we’re witnessing more frequent and
intense extreme weather events. Tapia emphasizes: “The El Niño phenomenon that
is affecting us right now has been influenced or exacerbated by global warming.
And that implies that it will cause more damage to the population.”

the mission of collaborating in climate change, global health, engineering, and
peace studies, among other fields.

At the core of this partnership are UC’s uniquely situated Field Stations
(@rcer_uc). These hubs of scientific exploration, in settings as diverse as
deserts, forests, and glaciers, provide unparalleled opportunities for hands-on
research and education! 🔬👩🏽‍🔬

📢 “This collaboration between our two universities builds on more than a
century of partnership between Columbia University and Chile. This partnership
reflects our mutual commitment to fostering innovation, cross-cultural
understanding, and the pursuit of solutions to complex global challenges,” said
#ColumbiaUniversity President Minouche Shafik.

💬 “Our tenet 'Where thinking meets doing' reflects our dedication to taking
scholarly insights and translating them into tangible actions. This
collaboration with Universidad Católica is a testament to our commitment to
drive meaningful change through the power of ideas and practical solutions,”
added #ColumbiaGlobal EVP, Wafaa El-Sadr.

🌎 🇨🇱 CLIMATE INITIATIVE | Our programming officer Chris Molinari joined
officials from @internacional_uc in an exploratory visit to the Cape Horn
International Center (@centrochic), which seeks to study and monitor how
subantarctic ecosystems respond to climate change, through a biocultural
approach that integrates science, education, anthropology and environmental
ethics.

🟢 CHIC - comprised of a consortium of seven universities and led by
@udemagallanes and co-led by UC – is located in Puerto Williams and in the Cape
Horn Biosphere Reserve, in Chile’s southernmost region of Magallanes. This
pristine area is a natural lab for the study of climate change and various
biocultural phenomena.

🟢 The main purpose of the visit was to evaluate synergies between @Columbia,
@ucatolicaoficial, and @centrochic. This stems from a newly signed Memorandum of
Understanding (MOU) between #Columbia and UC to advance research and collaborate
in a wide range of disciplines, including #climatechange, #globalhealth,
engineering, and peace studies.

🟢 Founded in 1953, #PuertoWilliams is a small city and naval base in Navarino
Island, facing the #BeagleChannel and #TierradelFuego. With a population of
around 3,000, it’s the southernmost city and people settlement in the world, and
serves as the capital of Chile’s Antarctic Province.

🐧🔬 The city is a major hub for scientific activities, and the gateway for
researchers heading to #Antarctica.
