10.15.21 - STEAM & THE HAAS BUILDING

STEAM & Haas

October 15, 2021

I am not sure there is a better example of the purpose for a STEAM school than
our recent journey that has led to the Haas building. STEAM is an acronym for
science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. But at its foundation
is a shift in the delivery method of education. A STEAM school is built around a
belief that students learn deeper and broader when there is a problem solving
and hands-on-learning focus.

For several years, Mr. Manley and I have wanted to create a learning environment
where authentic 21st-century learning could occur; a space where students and
teachers understand that learning is best accomplished by doing and where
solving problems is the driving force behind the curriculum. At Neosho, this
journey began with the creation of a vision that Central would become the
location for this learning space.

The reason I said the STEAM school is a perfect example of the learning model we
want to create is because it has required the school district to evolve with new
information and make changes to the original plan. Originally scheduled to open
in August of 2021, the opening had to be delayed because of COVID. Reevaluate
and adjust the plan. During the reevaluation time, two things began to challenge
our thinking about the conversion of Central. One, the cost escalation of a
major renovation to Central, and two, the increase in enrollment this year
within our district. We had already started to discuss how we could address
growth if enrollment continues to rise in the coming years. Reevaluate and
adjust the plan. When new information was learned about the Haas building,
another possibility was presented. The ability to address multiple needs at a
cost equal to or less than the Central renovation, took us back to reevaluation.
Assuming the structural engineers find the building sound, we will complete the
purchase of the Haas building in December. The pros - the district will likely
not need to do any major redistricting of students anytime soon, the district
creates an additional 250 seats or more for elementary students, the cost of
purchase and renovation is expected to be less than $5M (compared to Goodman; a
300-350 students school that cost $13M+), renovation costs may be able to be
funded by the American Rescue Plan funds, and the space is ideal for a STEAM
school. The con - it will push back the opening of the STEAM school until the
fall of 2023. Reevaluate and adjust the plan! “Reevaluate and adjust the plan”
is not a novel idea for adults. It should be a part of any successful business
or organization. However, think about the head start these STEAM academy
students will have when they enter the workforce already trained in solving
complex problems.

Complex problems sometimes require complex solutions. One of the risks
organizations run when they “change plans” based upon new information, is the
appearance of being wishy-washy. In full disclosure, this is a challenge for me.
It is hard for me to change directions very many times. However, I have learned
that sometimes it is better to appear to be wishy-washy than to be married to a
plan that has been weakened by new information. We are excited about the
opportunities the Haas building presents and the future opening of a STEAM
school in Neosho. Thank you for your support of Neosho School District! Be well.

We prepare the youth of our community to be people who are intelligent, driven,
and make lives better for those around them.
