Not her lovable but super-introverted dad, who after raising Millie alone, doesn’t want to watch her leave home to pursue her dream. Not her pesky and ongoing drama club rival, Oliver, who is the very definition of Simmering Romantic Tension. And not the “Millie Moods,” the feelings of intense emotion that threaten to overwhelm, always at maddeningly inconvenient times. Millie needs an ally. And when a left-open browser brings Millie to her dad’s embarrassingly moody LiveJournal from 2003, Millie knows just what to do. She’s going to find her mom. There’s Steph, a still-aspiring stage actress and receptionist at a talent agency. There’s Farrah, ethereal dance teacher who clearly doesn’t have the two left feet Millie has. And Beth, the chipper and sweet stage enthusiast with an equally exuberant fifteen-year-old daughter (A possible sister?! This is getting out of hand). But how can you find a new part of your life and expect it to fit into your old one, without leaving any marks? And why is it that when you go looking for the past, it somehow keeps bringing you back to what you’ve had all along? ...more GET A COPY * Amazon UK * Online Stores ▾ Amazon Audible Barnes & Noble Walmart eBooks Apple Books Google Play Abebooks Book Depository Alibris Indigo Better World Books IndieBound Thriftbooks * Libraries Hardcover, 320 pages Expected publication: January 4th 2022 by Wednesday Books More Details... This is gender reversed Mamma Mia meets Definitely Maybe with great enemies to lovers premise, a little You’ve got mail vibes ( side story ) This book gives you contagious happiness and pocketful of sunshine with its uplifting, relieving , feel good premise and beautifully resonating , so much likable, unique characters! Millie Price, a young diva, loud, entertaining, extrovert, self confident, expressive, ball of fire, an aspiring future Broadway star gets her precollege acceptance which means she has to move to the West Coast, living her 37 years old, Tolkien- stalker, dweeb, dorky, earnest, kind father who raised her alone when he was just a college graduated young man and her cool, friendly, successful club owner dear auntie! But when they didn’t give their consents, she needs an adult’s help for applying her Plan B which means she has to find the mother who left her when she was a baby and she ignored to contact with her for years. Thankfully her neighbor/ best friend Teddy is a tech nerd who can reach any information in few seconds. He already found LiveJournal of Millie’s father. There are three women were mentioned at this journal who could be the possible mother candidates of Millie. Beth: social worker, mother of Chloe who is a year younger of Millie, Steph: executive assistant of famous Broadway agent and a struggling actress and finally Farrah: a talented dance teacher. Millie decides to meet with all of these candidates which means she finds herself at the job interview to be intern of very famous Broadway manager. And guess what? She’s competing with her long time nemesis Oliver who likes to push her buttons and challenge her authority at school. And they’re both chosen to be temporary assistants for two weeks for finishing compelling tasks. The one with the best performance will get the permanent position. Millie finds herself attending Beth’s house parties, hanging out with Chloe to get her out of her shelf, attending dance lessons of Farrah and working so hard to defeat Oliver by achieving her impossible tasks, having morning coffee chats and long career talks with Steph. But the funny fact about her search is as she gets closer to find the identity of her mom, she finds out more about her true self and learns more about her long time nemesis who may be kind hearted and protective guy with perfect management skills. Maybe she doesn’t need to move to the West Coast to find her true happiness. Maybe the way to pursue her true dreams just stands right behind her eyes! I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH! One of the cutest, sweetest, most adoring, engaging, heartfelt reading I had for a long time! I’m giving my five musical, quirky, dorky, sweet, perfect supporting characters, permanent smile stars! Living in New York City with her slightly-dweeby, single-dad and fun-loving, Aunt Heather, you would think she was in the perfect place. Millie has her sights set elsewhere, however. More specifically, on a competitive precollege program that will take her out of state next year. Her Dad isn't happy when he finds out about Millie's plan. He doesn't understand why she can't finish up school at home. She's steps from Broadway, why would she need to travel across the country to help her future career prospects? It's clear to Millie that he just doesn't get it and probably never will. ((Our Millie is nothing if not dramatic.)) What Millie needs is an ally to sell this precollege program to her Dad, but where to find one? Although she knows next to nothing about her birth mother, an untouchable topic in their household, Millie does know that her Mom was a huge fan of musical theater. Perhaps if Millie can find her, she can recruit her onto Team 'Let Millie Go To Precollege', thus swaying her Dad. Going off clues found within her Dad's embarrassingly honest LiveJournal from 2003, Millie and her best friend, Teddy, begin the hunt in earnest. They narrow their candidates down to three women living within New York City. All Millie needs to do is get close to them and insert herself into their lives, until she can figure out which one is her Mom. When You Get the Chance swept me off my feet from the very start. It's a beautifully engaging love letter to musical theater, featuring one of my favorite YA Contemporary protagonists of all time. I absolutely adored Millie. Her moods, dreams and insecurities all felt incredibly real to me. I'm basically her Aunt Heather now. I love her so darn much. Emma Lord does a fantastic job of mixing cutesy-YA Romance, with quite serious family issues. This seems to be a trend in her work that I really appreciate. Millie has a lot of questions surrounding her Mom that unfortunately, she doesn't feel comfortable asking anyone. She can tell by her Dad's reaction anytime her Mom does get brought up, that he doesn't want to talk about. This leaves poor Millie to struggle on her own with a lot of unanswered questions. While her Dad is super loving and supportive of her, there's just a lot left unsaid. I loved how this wildly fun and hilariously witty story was wrapped around this serious, dramatic core. It's fun, sweet and fast-paced, while also having true substance that should resonate well with a lot of Readers. If you pick this one up, and I definitely recommend that you do, please take the time to read the Acknowledgements at the end. I think it gives great insight into Lord as a writer and her inspiration for this story. At this point, I will pick up anything Emma Lord writes. I love her brand. I'm sold! Thank you so much to the publisher, Wednesday Books, for providing me with a copy to read and review. I look forward to adding a hard copy to my growing Emma Lord collection. I admittedly judged this book by its cover. This is why I chose to read it. Many thanks to St. Martin's Press/Wednesday Books and NetGalley for making it available to me. It did not disappoint! In When You Get the Chance by Emma Lord, Millie gets the best news of her life on the final day of her junior year of high school. She's been accepted into a fancy pre-college for the performing arts. The problem is... her dad, who has raised her on his own and with the help of his sister after Millie's mother abandoned her, says no. At about the same time, her neighbor/best friend, Teddy, finds her dad's old LiveJournal from the year she would have been conceived. This leads her down the wormhole of trying to find her mother in what I would say is a New-York-based retelling of Mamma Mia to actually find her mother.. Her doing so clearly ends up having a profound, life-changing effect, as she not only finds her mom but herself. Millie is a force of nature. Most readers will like her because she is so unapologetically herself. She's brash and loud, she has big, bouncy curls, and is the most well-rounded main character I've come across in a young-adult book in quite some time. She definitely has her flaws. She's dramatic and occasionally self-centered, as are a lot of teenagers. I certainly was at that age. She is very self-aware, however, and owns up to these characteristics. The story is solid. I wanted to keep reading to find out who Millie's mom was, and if the tension between her and her arch nemesis, Oliver, would ever break. I was never bored with the story. Millie's unique narrator's voice and sense of humor kept me chuckling. There were 'aww' moments, and there were moments I teared up imagining what she might be feeling in this search for her mom. I really wanted things to work out for her. My couple complaints are that the story ended up being a touch predictable. I figured out who her mother was long before she did, although I wasn't sure enough not to read for confirmation. I ended up being right. I also thought the story wrapped itself up almost too neatly to be realistic. Don't get me wrong, though. It wasn't a disappointment. Review How do I start this because I honestly don't know. Well, let's just take a moment to praise Emma Lord because here she is, doing it again. Anyone who's met me knows that I very rarely give four stars to contemporary books, I rate them on almost a completely different brain scale than others. But, here we are with the second book by Emma Lord, up at four stars (and she's only published three), like she really takes the cake as my favorite contemporary author at this point. Go read Tweet Cute. Now. Okay, so When You Get the Chance is about Millie Price, a high-school actor who has big dreams for broadway. Once her dad tells her she can't go to precollege in LA (they reside in NYC), Millie makes it her mission to find her mother (who left her when she was a baby at her dad's doorstep) because she knows that her missing mom was also a broadway girl like her and would most likely side with her over her dad. This obviously lends way to a Mamma Mia! inspired plot point in which she attempts to find her mom (unlike Sophie who is finding her dad). Also unlike Mamma Mia!, she does find out who her mother is at the and so if you're like me and thought at the end of Mamma Mia! that is was crazy that Sophie didn't just take a DNA test and find out if Sam was actually her dad (because we were all rooting for Sam, you know it), this book is more for you than any other. Honestly, I have nothing to say other than I loved it? It could have been a five star read, the only reason it wasn't is because it was just very predictable. All the twists were fairly obvious, and we enjoy them, don't get me wrong, but still. Also, I'll be honest, the romance also fell flat. Yes, enemies-to-lovers, blah blah blah. But, while it was important (kind of) to the plot (KIND of), it wasn't highlighted. Which I am not against, romance is not my favorite thing to read, but I do read it a lot (specifically contemporary romance) which is really weird, but also it's more like I like fluff and I don't like details…Like make me squeal but I don't care about your problems, I guess? This is going into rant territory, back to the book. Oliver and Millie are very cute, and of course, I ship them like crazy, and like I said I don't love romance too much, but I kind of wish there was more? There were moments where I was like, "If Oliver shows up right now, I think I would die from emotions" kinda think, ya know? > ❝ ‘Millie, you’re not a person,’ he says. ‘You’re a roller coaster. My > seatbelt is buckled. I have no idea where you’re going, but I’m in for the > ride’ ❞ Anyway, this was the most confusing review, I literally just wrote words down and didn't proofread it whatsoever…But, eyes peeled for When You Get the Chance, for all my contemporary and Mamma Mia! lovers, this one's for you. New to Emma Lord, and hesitant about the premise (as much as I love Mamma Mia, theatre isn't really my thing), I wasn't sure what quite to expect from this novel. However, this novel delivered everything I didn't know I needed in my life and more. When You Get the Chance follows Millie Price, a devoted Broadway hopeful, as she does some sleuthing through her fathers journal to discover who her mother is. When she finds three candidates, all based in New York, she integrates herself into their lives as she tries to figure out which one could be her mother. This book beautifully illustrates the dynamics of unconventional families and the inner turmoil of having questions about what makes you, you. Something I really enjoyed with Millies quest to find her mother is her reason: beyond the typical "I just want to know," Millie has emotional problems she really wants to figure out. The book doesn't explicitly state any mental illness Millie suspects she may have; however, Millie deals with fits of passionate rage and unshiftable moods that she calls her "Millie Moods," and she wonders if she may have gotten it from her mother, and if her mother may be able to teach her coping skills. This reason was a lot more compelling than the plain curiosity Sophie experiences in the real Mamma Mia play (though that reason is also valid) and gave Millie's character more dimensions. THE ROMANCE IN THIS BOOK YALL. Millie has a theatre rival in the form of techie Oliver, of which they constantly butt heads. I admit, I've been a bit burnt out on rivals-to-lovers, as it seems to be becoming a very saturated trope, but THIS BOOK DOES IT SO WELL. Their banter, their backstories, the development of their relationship, their chemistry.... its just so perfect. Everything about their romance is a LOVE--think Not Here to Be Liked but... with even more chemistry?!?! I listened to this via audiobook and the narrator is great. She has a very clean voice that sounds like a teenagers without getting annoyingly sharp as some narrators tend towards when reading YA books. Highly recommend! Emma Lord is a fantastic writer, and I'll definitely be diving into her backlist after reading this book. I can't even control my emotions rn. I read this book all in about 5-6 hours. If you are or ever have been a theatre fan, you will probably enjoy this even more than I did. For me, the strength of this book is definitely in its characters. One of my frequent issues with YA books is that the characters are initially introduced as quite mature for their age, and then I inevitably get frustrated when they make decisions that feel very immature and more what I would expect from "normal" teenagers. But Millie is a very normal teenager from the start: she has Moods, she says things without thinking them through sometimes, she has hopes and dreams and ambitions, and doesn't always agree with the decisions her father makes on her behalf. Sounds pretty accurate to me. > When you know someone inside out, so well that they feel less like another > person and more like an extension of yourself. All your battles, all your > victories— they’re always shared, always known. Always fought for side by > side, whether you’re propping each other up or balancing each other out. The other element I really enjoyed was the different relationships Millie has. I like the single father trope, and I would've loved to see more interaction between Millie and Cooper. But I also really appreciated Heather and Teddy and the support system that they provide. The relationships felt very realistic; they got mad or disappointed with each other, but not in a way that felt unwarranted. There is a romantic subplot as well, but it is very slow burn and not the focus. Instead, the focus is on Millie and her journey of self-discovery. Her search for her mother forces her to confront some of the things she has always taken for granted, and I really liked seeing her relationships with the three women and how they all influenced her growth a little bit. The big reveal wasn't really a surprise, but all in all this is a heartwarming story and a fun read. ...more flag 8 likes · Like · see review Dec 05, 2021 Shaylan rated it it was amazing 5 stars for this adorable and heartwarming YA novel! I love the Mamma Mia! film and knew that this book would be so much fun. In When You Get a Chance, a future Broadway star takes a chance and sets out to find her birth mother—and herself along the way. Millie is ecstatic when she gets into Madison, a theater precollege that will allow her to pursue her Broadway dreams a year early; however, the only issue is that her father doesn’t want her to go. When she and her best friend, Teddy, stumble over his old LiveJournal that contains clues about the mother who abandoned her on her dad’s doorstep, she takes it as a sign to find her mother and get her to side with her. There’s Steph, an actress and executive assistant to a ruthless talent agent whom Millie ends up interning for alongside her rival, Oliver; Beth, a fellow Broadway fan whose daughter, Chloe, might be her half-sister; and Farrah, a dance teacher who immediately crushes on Millie’s aunt. The plot was so fun, as expected! Lord has a talent for writing outlandish plots and making them feel believable and unforced but still with the maximum amount of drama and chaos. I got this sense in her debut, Tweet Cute, but I definitely felt it for this book. She doesn’t hesitate to lean into the Mamma Mia! of it all, with Millie being a huge fan of the musical and an ABBA song always seemingly playing in almost every chapter. Still, Millie interacting with all three candidates (of being her mother) felt natural to me. I loved Millie’s character and her growth throughout the story. She’s ambitious and loud, always determined to achieve her goals, clearly seen in this plot to find her mom so she can go to a theater precollege. It was a feat in and of itself that I wasn’t annoyed by Millie as a theater kid at any point of the story (sorry to any theater kid reading this…but also not…); instead, I enjoyed the chaos her character added. I always love a good, chaotic book, and this one was no exception! In middle school, an embarrassing (to Millie, at least) video of her performing went semi-viral in the theater community. Since then, she’s sought to wipe out all existence of “Little Jo,” the character she was playing and what casting agents would condescendingly call her. Instead, she’s gone through “phases,” such as Goth Millie, Hippie Millie, and so on; these are, effectively, costumes that allow her to deflect. While she’s always been sure of her dream, there are still parts of herself that she has to find, and I really liked this journey. Even with a chaotic plot and protagonist, this book was still so heartfelt. Millie is extremely close with her dad and her aunt Heather, who’ve co-parented her her entire life. I found their talks to be so heartwarming; they’re both so supportive of Millie, and while she wants to know who her mother is, she clearly has two great parents already. Finding your mom turns out to be more of an emotional journey than Millie expects, which she grows to realize over the course of the story, and I really loved the ending where she has to face her emotions and think about why she really wanted to find her. I also really liked the friendships in this book! Millie has been close with Teddy, her neighbor, their entire lives; they’re partners-in-crime and always will be. I really liked reading about how close they are, with her trekking around the city with him to find geocaches and him patiently listening to all of her obsessions. She also befriends and mentors Chloe, her potential half-sister. Millie also unexpectedly connects with all three of her potential mothers in some way. Farrah and Steph particularly help her get through bad moments, as does Georgie, Steph’s and Millie’s boss. > Take all the chances you get! You never know where they’ll lead. The romance was so cute! Millie and Oliver have been rivals since the day they met, but it was fully cemented by the fact that Oliver talked their theater director out of doing Mamma Mia! their freshman year. They haven’t been able to do it since due to the rights being unavailable, and since then, Millie and Oliver have been imbued in a legendary feud. When they’re forced to be co-interns, however, they begin to see eye-to-eye, with Millie beginning to see that Oliver has helped her and her plans more than she previously realized. I really liked their scenes together, and their conversations had me laughing at times. Speaking of laughing, I loved the writing in this story. Again, I’ve loved this author’s books, particularly for the humor and dialogue. She writes with a unique voice, and I always find so much joy reading her books. Full of love and heart, When You Get the Chance took a chaotic, Mamma Mia!-esque plot and turned it into an emotional journey. Such a fun time whether or not you're a theatre kid/Mamma Mia fan, but if you are one, you're in for an even bigger treat. ...more flag 7 likes · Like · see review Jan 12, 2021 Eilidh marked it as to-read Shelves: anticipated-2022-releases From the sounds of this it looks like Lord’s best is yet to come. Yeah, I said it. There’s so much to it: musical references, strong characters, a great focus on family and friend relationships, discovering oneself, and a rivals-to-lovers romance. Yeah, I said it. There’s so much to it: musical references, strong characters, a great focus on family and friend relationships, discovering oneself, and a rivals-to-lovers romance. And every single element works well together, without infringing on the others. Millie Price is a Broadway-aspiring, extroverted girl who is on a mission to find her mom after her dad turns down her dreams of going to a precollege across the country. In a sort of reverse Mamma Mia situation, Millie juggles an internship competing against her biggest rival Oliver, making friends with a girl who might possibly be her half-sister, and taking dancing classes all to narrow down which woman out of three is her biological mother. I adored this book. It was entertaining in all the best ways. There were so many musical references! Sure, I didn’t get half of them but if you’re a die-hard theater fan? Please stop reading this review right now. Just go read this book. I promise you won’t be disappointed. Even if you’re not a musical theater fan (how could you not be one…?) there is still so much to love about this story. Millie’s sweet relationship with her single dad and her close friendship with her neighbor Teddy are all high points for sure. Friends-to-lovers is an amazing trope, don’t get me wrong, but it’s so nice to read about soulmates that are just platonic. Speaking of which, the romance isn’t the biggest feature in this book and you know what? It works. There’s just enough pagetime for our two leads (rivals-to-lovers can be a complicated trope) to have chemistry, while never taking away from Millie’s arc. One thing I love about New York is that if you get the right writer, it can feel like the most magical place on earth. “There’s this nonstop hopefulness, this weird charge that never leaves the air, like anything can happen. Like your destiny is constantly right around the corner.” And Emma Lord does it so well. I, the person who cannot sing worth a dime and has two left feet and couldn’t play the role of Peppa Pig if my life was on the line, wanted to do musical theater after this book. No joke. On another note, I also appreciate how Lord touched on some of the racism that is in the industry from the perspective of Oliver Yang, a Chinese-American boy. She didn’t go into depth with it but it’s still touched on. The tone of this book somehow manages to be serious and light at the same time. Millie has such a loud personality, but at her most vulnerable moments, one can’t help but relate to her. Watching her do all of these crazy things just to find out her mom is, and then discovering what exactly is so important about her discovering this fact is just…really well-done. Overall, When You Get The Chance is very nearly a perfect contemporary novel for me. It’s an effortless blend of musical theater, self-reflection, family/friend relationships, chaotic happenings, and sweet, believable romance that has cemented it as an all-time favorite for me. I’m giving this 4.5/5 stars! this is the funny, warm, wholesome broadway reverse mamma mia YA contemporary novel of my dreams (bet you didn’t expect that sentence). rtc! thank you so much wednesday books for an e-arc in exchange for an honest review! ...more flag 6 likes · Like · see review Dec 20, 2021 Toya (the reading chemist) rated it really liked it Shelves: young-adult, ya-contemporary, romance At this point, I feel like I will read anything that Emma Lord writes. flag 6 likes · Like · see review Aug 11, 2021 Mimi rated it it was amazing Emma Lord just keeps getting better and better with every book. Yes, this premise was almost as implausible as that of Mamma Mia, which clearly inspired the story. But it was also a huge amount of fun. Millie and Oliver's relationship was super-cute, as was Millie's relationship with her father. To me, it was incredibly obvious who Millie's mom was, but that didn't spoil the fun of the book at all.
