THE 2024 ACE COMMUNITY SURVEY IS NOW OPEN

Featured by The Ace Community Survey

It’s that time of year again – we are now recruiting participants for the Ace
Community Survey!

The Ace Community Survey is run by the Ace Community Survey Team–a
community-based volunteer organization–in collaboration with Northwestern
University.  It collects valuable information on the demographics and
experiences of members in the ace community, including asexual, demisexual,
gray-asexual, and related identities. Participants also have the option to make
data available to external researchers, or only to our team.

The survey is open to anyone: ace, non-ace, or still questioning. As long as you
are 15 years of age or older, we want to hear from you! We want to get a wide
variety of responses from as many parts of the community as possible, so we
encourage you to share this link with any other potentially interested
individuals you know or any ace communities you participate in.

SEXUAL VIOLENCE & CHILDHOOD SEXUAL ABUSE IN THE ACE COMMUNITY (2021 SURVEY)

April 28, 2024 by The Ace Community Survey

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) – a month to raise awareness
about sexual assault and educate communities about preventing it. In solidarity,
we are posting the following findings on sexual violence and childhood sexual
abuse in the ace community from the 2021 survey.*

*The 2021 survey was released on October 25, 2021, and closed on December 4,
2021. It received a total of 12,226 responses, with 11,547 respondents
indicating that they were ace. For information regarding our methodology and
limitations, please see the 2021 Ace Community Survey Summary Report.

If you need support, please consult the international directory of sexual
violence resources and additional resources.

MAIN FINDINGS

The 2021 Ace Community Survey asked a number of questions regarding sexual
violence and childhood sexual abuse. Some main findings were as follows:

 * Fewer ace respondents reported sexual violence than non-ace respondents and
respondents who were unsure if they are ace.**
 * Fewer ace respondents reported sexual violence in the 2021 survey than in the
   2020 survey.
 * Nonbinary, transgender, and intersex ace respondents reported more sexual
violence than ace respondents who were binary, not transgender, or not
   intersex.
 * Fewer ace respondents reported child sexual abuse than non-ace respondents
and respondents who were unsure if they are ace.**

**Please note that our samples of non-ace respondents and respondents who were
unsure if they are ace are small, and not representative of the non-ace people
and people who are unsure if they are ace.

Further details are below.

HEALTH IN THE ACE COMMUNITY (2021 SURVEY)

April 7, 2024 by The Ace Community Survey

Happy World Health Day! In recognition, we are sharing our findings on the
topics of health, suicide, and self-harm from the 2021 survey. The 2021 survey
was open between October 25 and December 4, 2021, and received a total of 12,226
responses, of which 11,547 indicated that they were ace. Although our results
are not representative of ace people worldwide, we hope that this can shed some
light on the health of members in the ace community.

For in-depth discussion on methodology and limitations, please see the 2021
survey.

If you experience any difficult emotions and would like to talk to someone, you
may wish to consult this list of international suicide crisis lines and these
additional resources on suicide and safety. If you are in the US or Canada, you
can call the Suicide Crisis Lifeline (988).

MAIN FINDINGS

The 2021 Ace Community Survey asked a number of questions regarding the health
of respondents as well as their history with suicide and self-harm. Some main
findings were as follows:

 * Alcohol was the most common substance used, but almost half of ace
respondents had not used any substances.
 * About 40% of ace respondents considered themselves mentally ill or
   neurodivergent.
 * About a third of ace respondents had been diagnosed with an anxiety or
   depressive disorder.
 * Transgender aces reported the highest levels of self-harm.
 * Nearly a third of ace respondents had considered suicide, a fifth made a
plan, and 2% of those that attempted went through with one or multiple
attempts. Over 10% of ace respondents attempting suicide reported that it
ended in an injury that had to be treated.

Further details are below.

DELAYS IN THE 2023 ACE COMMUNITY SURVEY

February 24, 2024 by Siggy

Traditionally, a new Ace Community Survey has been released every year. However,
the 2023 Ace Community Survey has been delayed due to unforeseen circumstances.
We are announcing the continuation of those delays for an indeterminate time
period.

Nonetheless, the survey hasn’t disappeared, and will likely release in the first
half of 2024. It will be the only survey we release this year. There are some
significant changes to the survey, including new survey software and IRB
approval. We hope these changes will improve the experience and promote more
research.

CALL FOR NEW VOLUNTEERS

October 25, 2023 by Siggy

The Ace Community Survey Team is currently looking for new volunteers,
particularly people with programming or technical writing skills.

Our team designs and releases a survey every year, analyzes data, and produces
reports. We seek to understand the diversity and well-being of ace communities,
and educate activists and researchers with up-to-date information.

The major roles that we currently need volunteers for are:

 * Data analysis: Work with our team to create summaries and visualizations of
survey data and find interesting trends, review the analysis of team members,
and possibly improve tools for analysis. Work is done in Python with Jupyter
notebooks and collaboration through GitHub and Discord (in English).
 * Report writing: Work with our team and describe, interpret, and contextualize
analyzed data and review work of other report writers. We currently publish
one major report each year (in English). Comfort with basic ace concepts and
terminology is required. If interested, also help with interpretation of
   write-in responses.
 * Translation: Work with our team to translate the survey questions and answers
each year and the corresponding reports made by the Ace Community Survey
Team. Translators also proofread these texts.

All work is done remotely over the Internet, using Discord as our coordination
platform. People from all over the world are welcome to apply!

Time commitments are flexible depending on your availability at any given part
of the year. We recommend setting aside at least 4-5 hours a month to do work on
your own time, plus an additional hour for our internal meetings on Discord. We
will provide further details upon joining, and will also hold trainings for the
new volunteers. If you’re interested, please fill out this form by November 18,
2023. If you are selected, you will hear back from us by December 10, 2023. If
you’d like more information, you may contact us at acecommunitysurvey@gmail.com
