REMEMBERING THE BENGALI CONTRIBUTION DURING THE FIRST WORLD WAR

Several sources indicate that education may reduce a woman's marriageability
Rosario , ; Abdullah and Zeidenstein , 79; IPS 1 Apr. The family of an educated
woman may have to provide a larger dowry than it can afford to find an
appropriately educated husband Abdullah and Zeidenstein , 79 , or accept a
marriage proposal from a far less qualified suitor or a family beneath it in
social status IPS 1 Apr.

According to Rashida Nawaz, however, such views would have currency only in the
countryside, but not in the city, particularly among the middle class 23 Dec.
Educated women are valued by professional men in Bangladesh, she states, even if
in some cases only for their income potential ibid. Abdullah and Zeidenstein, in
their study of village women in Bangladesh, note that very poor families are
"not likely to While conceding that a poor family or one in difficult
circumstances may not enjoy the range of options available to a wealthier
family, Nawaz states that in general families want the best possible matches for
their daughters 23 Dec.

There are a lot of social pressures surrounding marriage, according to Nawaz, so
it is in a family's best interest to ensure their daughters' marriages are
successful 23 Dec. Nawaz indicates that there is no uniform or standard method
of investigating the background of potential grooms. In rural areas,
particularly in Chittagong and Sylhet, a family will not go out of its way to
investigate a potential groom. This is not because rural families see their
daughters' marriages as unimportant, states Nawaz, but because the groom's
family will be known within the community.

In general the groom will be from the next village or at most two or three
villages away. However, in urban areas such as Dhaka, particularly among the
middle class, the groom and his family would be very thoroughly investigated by
the bride's family. The middle class is still fairly small in urban Bangladesh,
so even here one can find out almost anything about a potential groom and his
family.

Only where a groom has been working overseas for several years might there be
difficulty checking into his background. For example, it would be "virtually
impossible," according to Nawaz, for a family to unwittingly marry off a
daughter into a family with Jama'at-i-Islami JI sympathies. One would only have
to look at how the women in the family behave or are dressed to see that the
family is Jama'at.

Even if such a family did try to hide its political affiliations, Jama'at
supporters and sympathizers would be known within the community. In addition, a
Jama'at family likely would not want their son to marry a non-Jama'at woman
given the difficulties and possible social embarrassment i.

With regard to polygamy, Nawaz states that no family, except one living in
abject poverty or in desperate circumstances, would even consider marrying off a
daughter as a second, third or fourth wife.

Sarah White, in her study of the situation of women in rural Bangladesh also
found that only the very poor, both Hindu and Muslim, were likely to arrange
polygamous marriages for their daughters White , Polygamous marriage is a "high
risk strategy Sources indicate that many things can go wrong in an arranged
marriage, especially during the first few years when the young bride has no
power base within her new home Abdullah and Zeidenstein , 74, 76; New Left
Review Mar. She may find her husband unsuitable for any number of reasons, or
may have problems meeting the demands and expectations of her mother-in-law
Abdullah and Zeidenstein , According to Kabeer, a young bride's position in the
household hierarchy is "subordinate to that of her mother-in-law and senior
sisters-in-law," and she is regarded with suspicion until she has integrated
into the household and begins to identify with its interests New Left Review
Mar.

White found that although the restrictions placed on new brides are "probably at
their tightest in richer Muslim households, the subordination of new brides is
broadly similar across community and class" , In some joint household6
situations the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law may be in competition with one
another for the son's attention, with the result that the mother-in-law "may try
to keep [the daughter-in-law] insecure in her relationship with her new husband,
so that her own influence will last," according to Abdullah and Zeidenstein ,
For a woman with some education who has married into a traditional rural family,
"the adjustment problems with an uneducated mother-in-law are likely to be
severe," they state ibid.

Finally, if the girl's family is unable to provide or is late in providing dowry
to the groom's family, she may be exposed to physical or other abuse from the
mother-in-law or other family members ibid. The ability to leave and
consequences of leaving an arranged marriage can vary. One study of rural
Bangladesh society found that Muslim women, unlike Hindu women, do not upon
marriage give up their rights of inheritance and asylum within their natal
gusthis 7 JCFS Spring , Rashida Nawaz indicates that a Muslim woman can
generally return to her natal family, even after a second or third divorce 23
Dec.

According to Kabeer, however, once married a woman is "effectively cut off" from
any support networks within her natal gusthi New Left Review Mar. A family of
some social standing may take a daughter back and try to arrange another
marriage, they state, but a good second marriage will likely cost more than the
first marriage and the "expense and risks of having a non-productive young woman
at home may be a burden" ibid, Further, families with fewer resources "may find
it very difficult to extricate their daughter" from a bad marriage ibid. Nawaz
points out that divorce rates are much lower among the middle and upper classes
than among the very poor because well-off families have greater financial
resources and take more care in ensuring good matches, and because the children
are older and better educated when they get married 23 Dec.

Most divorces occur soon after marriage, before the birth of children Population
and Development Review Sept. Nawaz agrees that it can be difficult for a
divorced woman with young children to return to her natal family, especially if
her parents are no longer alive, because her brothers usually will not want to
carry the burden of another person in their own household 23 Dec.

A rural woman in such a situation may have to move to the city to look for work,
generally in domestic service or other unskilled manual labour ibid. In extreme
situations a woman may have to resort to prostitution, according to Nawaz ibid.
Nor can a divorced woman expect much sympathy from other women. Significance of
this election First, for the first time in a decade, all the political parties
took part in the election the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, or the BNP,
boycotted the election.

Its per capita income has doubled over the last decade. What does this economic
transformation of Bangladesh mean for the Subcontinent as a whole? Economic
model It has begun to change the economic hierarchy in the region, by displacing
Pakistan in the second spot. It had chosen the path of regional cooperation, i.

Peaceful resolution of territorial issues Bangladesh have peacefully resolved
its maritime territorial issues with India and Burma through arbitration. That
opens up significant room for maritime economic and security cooperation within
the Bay of Bengal. That in turn will deepen the integration between eastern
Subcontinent and Southeast Asia. The rise of Bangladesh and the expanding
regional cooperation centred around it allows us to imagine a positive future
for the Eastern subcontinent and its integration with the dynamic East Asian
region. News Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina has won a fourth term in the just
concluded elections, which makes her the longest serving head of government that
the nearly year-old country has known.

Details of the elections Awami League took of the elected seats in the member
JatiyaSangsad, the Bangladeshi Parliament, and as a result will get to nominate
its candidates to most of the remaining seats, all of which are reserved for
women. With just seven seats of its own, the Opposition Jatiya Oikiya Front has
been wiped out. Why Sheikh Hasina Won? Weak opposition: The main opposition
leader Khalida Zia is in jail Importance of the Victory for India As a friend of
Hasina, Delhi is clearly happy at the election outcome.

PM Modi was the first foreign leader to call and congratulate her on the
victory. India has made trade concessions to Bangladesh, invested more money in
the country, and is in the midst of several infrastructure and connectivity
projects. The only outstanding issue between the two is the Teesta river waters
sharing agreement. India has rightly stayed out of the internal tumult over the
last five years or more. Way forward With great power comes great
responsibility.

It is now up to Prime Minister Hasina to ensure that her government uses its
sweeping mandate not to stamp out, but to strengthen, a multi-party democracy,
individual freedoms, and the rule of law in Bangladesh. The last five years saw
the Hasina government take an authoritarian turn, jailing opponents, stifling
dissent, and generally responding to all criticism badly. Repression can lead to
a rejection of democratic politics. The alternative, as is evident at many
places in the world, could be much worse than what Bangladesh has experienced in
the past.

To begin with, she has to heal a country rattled by political divisions and
violence. The Election Commission should conduct a fair investigation into
allegations of rigging to restore faith in the poll process. Hasina should reach
out to the Opposition.

Ventricular septal defect is the most common subtype of cardiovascular
malformations, with a prevalence similar to that reported by Strickland et al.

FUZHOU HOTEL RESERVATIONS

The proportions for ventricular septal defect and atrial septal defect were
comparable to, whereas the proportions for patent ductus arteriosus and
tetralogy of Fallot were higher than, those in other reports Agay-Shay et al.
The differences between our results and those of similar studies may arise from
differences in sample collection and in the disease definition used.
Furthermore, our hospital-based sample was derived from a relatively small
region with limited representatives of the population of congenital heart
defects, which might be another cause of the discrepancy in proportions.

We included approximately two-thirds of the regional births in our study. A few
pregnant women might transfer to a grade-A hospital from a lower-grade hospital
when a complicated pregnancy condition is found. Considering the small
percentage of gravidae in lower-grade hospitals and the small percentage of
gravidae who incurred abnormal pregnancy including fetal cardiovascular
malformations, the discrepancies among the gravidae choosing different grade
hospitals, if present, would not significantly alter the outcomes in our
analyses.

There are several limitations in the present study. Some gravidae were excluded
from the analyses, which might have led to bias in our results. No maternal
residential history during the pregnancy was available.

Thus, deviation of the exposure assessment with bias in an unknown direction
might have occurred, although reports have shown no obvious impact on these
assessments resulting from a change in living address during pregnancy Lupo et
al. Additional unmeasured covariates, such as the socioeconomic status, living
habits, and dietary factors of the gravidae, could have affected our results,
although we did not evaluate the co-effects from these factors in our analyses
because of the limited amount of relevant data.

The temporal factors in our study design along with the data obtained from a
limited number of monitoring stations might also have compromised our exposure
evaluation. We did not investigate other subtypes of cardiovascular
malformations beyond the four major subtypes owing to the inadequate sample
sizes; thus, we may have missed their possible associations with PM 10 exposure.

PM 10 was found to be associated with pulmonary valve stenosis Padula et al.
Associations were found between in utero exposure to PM 2. We did not observe
these associations owing to the relatively small sample sizes.

A gravida generally lives inside the house during gestation, and indoor PM 10
levels might be very different from outdoor PM 10 levels, particularly in
developing countries Ezzati and Kammen ; this potentially overestimates, or more
likely, underestimates the exposure that could bias our effect estimates. We
assigned exposures using only the geographic technique regardless of the impact
from local meteorological factors, traffic factors, social geography, and the
spatiotemporal activity patterns of individual gravida. More importantly, we did
not investigate the co-effects from other air pollutants such as carbon
monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, and ozone, which are associated with fetal heart
development Gilboa et al.

Therefore, our data did not represent all of the major air pollutants emitted
and transported, which is another limitation of our study. Because we lacked the
entire serial monitoring data for PM 2.

In conclusion, exposure to ambient levels of PM 10 during early pregnancy was
shown to be associated with fetal cardiovascular malformations. The most
significant association was found in the second quartile of the exposure levels,

This article has been cited by other articles in PMC. Abstract Background:
Maternal exposure to ambient air pollution has been associated with an increased
risk of congenital heart defects in offspring; however, the results are
inconsistent. Methods: The gravidae from a hospital-based case—control study in
Fuzhou, China, during — were assigned d or 1-mo averages of daily PM 10 using an
air monitor—based inverse distance weighting method during early pregnancy.

Results: PM 10 levels were positively associated with the risks of atrial septal
defect aORs ranging from 1. Conclusions: Our findings suggest some positive
associations between maternal exposure to ambient PM 10 during the first two
months of pregnancy and fetal cardiovascular malformations. Introduction A
growing body of epidemiological literature has suggested an association between
ambient particulate matter PM exposure and fetal anomalies, particularly
cardiovascular malformations.

Methods Study Area Fuzhou is the capital city of Fujian Province and is located
in the coastal area of southeastern China. Open in a separate window. Figure 1.
Study Population We collected the data from pregnant women who resided in
Fuzhou, China during their pregnancy and were gestationally monitored and
delivered at Fujian Maternity and Child Health Hospital or Fuzhou General
Hospital.

Classification of Fetal Cardiovascular Malformations Cardiovascular
malformations were diagnostically categorized in the following nine subtypes:
ventricular septal defect, atrial septal defect, patent ductus arteriosus,
coarctation of aorta, pulmonary valve stenosis, tetralogy of Fallot, hypoplastic
left heart syndrome, transposition of conducting arteries, and other uncommon
subtypes such as ectopia cordis, ventricular double outlets, tricuspid atresia,
inborn aortic arch anomalies, and others. Statistical Analysis Twenty-four-hour
measurements of PM 10 , hospital-based birth certificates, and birth defect
records were used for our analyses.
